Hey thanks clockwise! That’s really nice to hear 🙂

Yes I’m aware that the last song feels a little off. It’s the Niggas in Paris (by Jay Z & Kanye West) Sub Zero Remix. He plays some pretty old school sounding dnb. I guess I could’ve put it after the other Sub Zero song in my mix, but I don’t like hearing two songs of the same DJ in a row so I decided to use it as an outro and to play it completely.

And yeah there are indeed a few parts where it’s off beat. Probably most of them occur when there is a transition from 87.00/87.50 bpm tracks. Since I don’t use the sync button, the closest I can get to 87.00 bpm from a 87.50 song is 87.05 (or 87.45/87.50) and then I have to change the pitch manually with the aid of the visuals.
Also, sometimes I like to put in some “teasers” and to “pre-mix” a bar of the next song into the first one, to continue for two more bars with the first song and to then cut off to the other song instantly. I guess it’s one of the things I do to make my work sound a bit more “unique” hehe. However, around 7 minutes I miscalculated and it became a mess because of the double bass drum. Just letting the bar finish before cutting the song seemed like my only option there…

About the volume/gain; that’s pretty strange. I used the auto-gain function and didn’t touch the master volume troughout the mix. Next time I’ll surely pay attention to it!

Thanks for the otherwise positive feedback! I feel quite honoured and am glad to have introduced you to some more dnb :p

I have an early 2011 (entry level) MacBook Pro 13″. I think it’s plenty fast, and just like Terry’s mine’s filled with tons of other programs, even games (using Windows 7 via bootcamp). It still runs Traktor Pro 2 like butter. In other words, there’s no reason to fear any current MacBook (Pro) wouldn’t do the trick.

It’s totally up to you. Just make sure your wallet can handle the purchase.

I’d say the best thing to do is to just have fun and try getting used to the attention of the crowd as you go along, especially since it’s only your first time. I’ve seen a fair amount DJ’s, and even the biggest ones make mistakes!

Two years ago there was a female DnB DJ playing at the local youth pub. She was the last DJ of the evening and almost every track she put into the mix was off beat… Still the crowd was having a good time if only because she knew which songs to play. That was in 2010… A few weeks ago, I saw her in a DJ competition on the national television and she was still having a hard time beatmatching those same songs. Granted, she’s using vinyl which I am now aware is probably the hardest technique… But I have to say I’ve always admired her because she’s clearly having a great time every time she’s playing.

My point being; people that are having a good time tend to be forgiving in general. Moreover, I have a feeling that you’re putting a lot of effort in your work and in a year’s time I think you’ve accomplished a lot! Most songs in your mix really sound spot on. You’re doing a pretty marvelous job, so don’t worry 😉

(Just the 2 cents of a complete novice for what it’s worth.)

Yeah I have to say I already learned a fair deal by reading the blogs over here! It’s really nice to have stumbled upon such a nice community.

And in that case we should all be crossing our fingers on saturday. But I already listened to your DnB mix and I’m pretty sure you’ll nail the gig. If not it will be the public’s or venue’s fault haha.

Btw, you will find my first mix in the other section 😉 It’s probably not as good as the other mixes that were already posted over there, but everybody needs to start somewhere.

Thanks again for the comment and the support!

Nice mix girl! Well chosen tracks and especially the tunes of the second half of the mix really blend into each other nicely.

Thumbs up and success with your first gig this saturday! Based on what i heard I’m sure you will do just fine and I wish you a great time 😉

You’ve got a nice taste yourself! And yeah Skrillex’s work is very disputable, although he invented a few addicting tunes indeed. To me Ruffneck Bass is as well the one that comes to mind immediately haha.

And I only picked up mixing last month. I have been playing the guitar since 2002, but don’t enjoy it as much as I did before our band split up in 2006.

Anyways it’s nice to meet someone on the net with similar taste! I will definitely look out for your mixes around the forum and I will post mine asap. Shouldn’t be a problem since I am already using Soundcloud hehe.

I gotta admit that I occasionally like listening to some Skrillex tunes, but I heard that he went the future house route so I don’t really consider him a dubstep artist 🙂 I like artists like Caspa, Trolley Snatcha, Skism, Eptic (an upcoming Belgian fella), Modestep etc. But also more underground things like Distance, Von D, Kryptic Minds, Silkie, …

DnB: Sub Focus, Tantrum Desire, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, … But I dig old school stuff as well (Sub Zero, Logistics, …)

    Thanks for the warm welcome!
