MemberWas in same position as you, except I had no gear except a laptop and traktor.
Had never made a mix before, and I got signed up by a friend as a joke to play a 45 minute slot in a dance tent at a university festival day where a few hundred people attend. I couldn’t back out, so stayed up the night before writing down exactly what I was gonna loop and when I was going to start each song etc. It went really well for the crowd, but because I was so nervous I didn’t enjoy it myself. The next gig I did was when I had a controller, I made loads of mistakes, but both me and the people at the party enjoyed it because anything is better than an iPod on shuffle. There is no pressure, as long as you don’t big yourself up to people, you will be fine. Just do it, it is such a great feeling. (Preparing the first couple of mixes just to calm the nerves is a great idea)

MemberChecked out the mc5 on amazon, and they get quite a few bad reviews for sound quality. So close to pulling the trigger, but wondered if there was anything else?
Would these also be suitable for producing or not? Not a massive audiophile so a bit lacking in knowledge when it comes to this.

MemberI absolutely loved the DJ3 Me, except I couldn’t update the firmware, (faulty machine) so had to return it to the seller.
However, if he hadnt taken it back, I would be using and enjoying it now, as the vast amount of buttons and options left me trying and learning different things each day. Feels and looks so much better than the MTP, and if mine hasn’t had a problem, I wouldn’t definitely have kept if.
Standalone functionality is also good fun, as I played around djing off of an iPod touch and an iPhone plugged onto the two external channels.
Also the sound card is great. Hope you like it as much as I did, and hopefully keep it for longer.
If I was you I would do the firmware update as soon as you get it.Ess Jay
MemberI’m using it as a drum machine when I get bored and there is a break In a song, enjoy making my own beats, and also for filling long breaks I like, but might clear the dance floor, I just make sure I capture a loop from the intro, and then set it going to keep the beat, allows me to use weird effects on vocals, but still keep a solid beat going.
To be honest I don’t use it massively, but even me drumming a beat on it seems to get a lot of attention from the crowd, maybe just cos they see me doing something.

MemberCheers Terry, if shipping isn’t too expensive il give these a try

MemberChecked reviews and it says they are great, but the ear pads dont fit snugly so sound escapes making them not sound as good.
Would love to go to a shop to try loads out, but all the shops I have been in are limited and love dre beats

MemberUp in the woods near me they have raves set up in old bomb holes from WW2 playing off PA on the back of a truck.
Drove up once to check it out, and it was lots of cider, tracksuits and hostility. Definitely only welcome of you knew people there, but it was just playing jungle and garage really.

MemberNot even heard of it, but the reloop and numark are great controller, and if you can stretch your budget, then definitely go for one of those two. Will allow you to play around with different software too

MemberFilter knobs are mapped as endless encoders for me, and it is a little annoying, but I got over it

MemberGo for it!
I’d say just to calm your nerves prepare a large playlist of well known tracks (definitely keep it top 40 / well known songs) and then have a bit of fun.
If you weren’t there, they would just hear a playlist, you may as well get up there and get a bit of practice on with a real crowd. But that is just my view. Good luck whatever you chose mate.

MemberBig mamba looks great but they won’t ship to the UK.
Yeah, got a decksaver for my s2 and getting a bag for F1 so hopefully will be able to get away with a normal bag

MemberI had the reloop jockey 3 which is older but better integrated with traktor. The build quality felt amazing, but I had problems with reloop support, and then got offered well over what I paid for the model, so sold it, but customer support took ages to sort my problems.
Quality machine though, but was overkill for me, and s2 and F1 suit me better. And they look dead sexy and girls love flashing buttons they can “press” (on mute)

MemberI had a similar decision to you, and ended up going with the s2, and love it. Ended up with an s2 and f1 as I can use 2 decks and a remix deck then. (Still not quite using the F1 as much as I would like, but I’m getting there).
Had a 4 deck controller for a month (reloop dj3) and found that I barely ever used 4 track decks. Although being able to play a house party with my friend, both just plugged into the external decks and both djing off iPhones was cool.
The s2 in also newer than the s4, so should not get outdated as soon, therefore retain it’s value if you come to sell.

MemberIn theory all you need is a Laptop to start gigging, and use the keyboard mappings to control whichever software you use.
And a far as getting gigs goes, when you are ready, make a promo mix and talk to promoters and get yourself known. Have funDecember 14, 2012 at 4:34 pm in reply to: What to do when special guests of the host's asks you for the copy of your music? #33641Ess Jay
Membernot just fader jockeying
Not really related, but what do you mean when you talk about Fader Jockeying?
