May I ask why you want to go for monitor speakers if you just want them to listen to music ?

Monitors are designed to produce a “flat” or “uncoloured” sound and are generally speaking more robust than home hi-fi speakers because they have to be able to cope with unmastered sound as you might get in a studio. Hence why they are specifically designed for audio mixing and mastering and why they’re generally more expensive.

If you are just going to be listening to compressed commercial recordings and not doing any of the above then I would recommend that you save yourself the money and go for home hi-fi speakers instead.

thanks for that mr stifffy and thanks for taking the time to read that massive post and your tips.

basically what was happening was, when I adjust the beatgrid markers, the first half of the track would be fine but the markers would all be off for the second half making mixing out difficult.

So what I did was save one version of the track that was marked out correctly for the first half and load that in deck A .. then save the same track but this time with the second half mapped correctly and load it in deck C.

then during a lull point in the track with no beat/bass (trance), I would play C and kill A and mix out of C into B

sorry if that sounds really confusing but it just seemed the easiest thing to do and worked, but I’m going to try what you suggested and turn off sync and try to go for a slower transition and see how that goes.

    thx again !

Thanks for that suggestion stiffy..ill look up warping and see what it involves.

I’m not sure how else to explain it so rather than confuse everyone I’ve copied and pasted the relevant section I was referring to , apologies in advance for the lengthy post that follows:

As well as tracks with a straight rhythm there are tracks where, after a break- down, the beats are not exactly on the gridlines anymore, maybe because the length of the breakdown is not a whole number of beats. These kinds of tracks can still be played in sync with other tracks if you know some simple tricks. I didn’t find a proper netlabel track for this scenario so I shall explain the proce- dure in a dry run.
The goal with this track is to get a stable beatgrid for mixing the track in as well as to mix the end of the track into the next track. If you can create a partially stable beatgrid you will be able to use Traktor’s synchronisation features.
Create two beatmarkers for one track.
The trick with those tracks is simply to set two beatmarkers. Set the first one, if possible on the first downbeat at the beginning of the track and then the sec- ond one on the first downbeat after the breakdown. I recommend using manual beatmarkers just to avoid clicking on the Autogrid button because this causes either the manually changed tempo to be altered or it removes the already pre- sent manual beatmarkers.
Before setting the second beatmarker switch off the Snap option in the Master Panel of the Global Section. Open the dialog Preferences/Transport and activate the Vinyl option in the section Mouse Control. The first setting ensures that you are able to set cue points which are not on the gridlines of the beatgrid. By acti- vating the Mouse Control Mode Vinyl you are able to move the waveform free in its window; this is necessary if you want to put the second beatmarker off the gridlines that is created by the first beatmarker.
Another variation which is especially useful if the overall tempo of the track is not very stable is to find some beats at the end of the track which can be looped easily. Then set the second beatmarker at the same position as the “Loop In point” and save the loop. When mixing in the next track just activate the loop to avoid a beat offset with the next track.
    Beatgridding
    13

Playback of tracks with two beatmarkers.

When playing back tracks that have several beatmarkers you need to switch the Sync button in the respective decks off. If the Sync button is on Traktor makes sure that the tempo and phase of the track are in sync with the master tempo source. In this case when Traktor reaches the position of the second beat- marker, which is not on a gridline of the previous beatgrid, you get a phase off- set and Traktor will correct it. This leads to an audible jump in the track. To avoid this jump caused by the synchronisation best practice is to proceed as follows (assuming that in deck A the track with the two beatmarkers is loaded, that deck B contains a track with a stable tempo and one beatmarker and that you are using the master clock mode Clock Master Intern):
    1. Blend in deck A with activated the Sync button until the channel fader of the previous track is turned completely down.
    2. Let the track play for a few bars before the second beatmarker and then deactivate the Sync button in deck A.
    3. When Traktor reaches the second beatmarker the phase meter jumps be- cause the phase of deck A is not in sync with the phase of the master tempo source anymore. Use the tempo bend function to get this deck back in sync with the phase of the master tempo source.
    4. Then reactivate the Sync button in deck A. 5. It is now easy to create a properly beatmatched blend of the track in deck B.

Lot of valid points raised above, but here’s my two cents worth. Some genres are much more amenable to harmonic mixing. I mainly play trance and this certainly is one of them. Harmonic mixing is especially useful if I’m mixing in and out of tracks quickly and makes the transitions a lot smoother. Armin Van Buuren is a big advocate of harmonic mixing and a lot of his mixes are organised this way. That being said I totally agree with DJ GRE that dissonance used correctly can be a very striking effect.

Also DJeengenious you ask do they have to be in the same key. Short answer is no. If you’ve ever experimented with musical chords and arpeggios you can hear how some work together whilst others clash. Just experiment with it and see what you like and do what you think sounds good…that’s one of the greatest things about DJing, it is whatever you want to make it. Just like Jem said there are no rules.

    Hi RealRasputin
Thanks for your review. I watched Phil’s video on it as well and I have to say it looks like an awesome unit. Thanks for clarifying that the Pitch Paddle act as a Pitch Fader. It is definitely something I’d be interested in as most clubs here use DJM800 or 900. Do you use it to DJ in clubs ? How do you find set up and plugging in process when you’re taking over ?

Hey thanks for that video Hessler !

It was exactly as you said, he was using C & D as sample decks and firing it off
using the effects buttons. Really nice looking unit.

Can’t wait for Phils review of this.

    @softcore thanks for that.

Reading back maybe I didn’t explain it well, Traktor Bible calls this “Tracks with a Moving Grid”. They explain how to create 2 beatmarkers for one track (it’s tutorial 7 under Beatgridding in Traktor Bible). I’ve read it but it seems a little complex, I was just wondering if anyone knew of an easier way around this problem.

@TStef thanks for posting that question I was trying to work my way through the same problem so the thread saved me heaps of time.

Another issue that I’m having is that when I correct the beatgrid markers for the beginning of some tracks when I get to the end of the track they’re all off and vice versa. Is there a simple was around this problem ? I was reading up on how to set up 2 separate grids for different parts of the track but will that cause a “jump” whilst playing ?

If anyone could point me in the right direction I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thanks so much U31, I’m glad you enjoyed them and I really appreciate you taking the time to listen.

I especially liked the second track Sex in Zero Gravity..it’s got a nice groove to it. I’ll be interested to hear
what you come with. Keep me posted.

Nice work mate ! I had it on the background today and there was something interesting at every transition. Really enjoyed it (and that’s coming from a trance person !) Especially like the track “Deeply Into You” you bring in it 3:30..is that the King Kornelius remix ?
