MemberI have to say I’m also of the thought that less is more when it comes to effects, especially when starting out. I’ve seen some songs just get absolutely massacred in clubs and it just sounds terrible…producers spend a lot of time getting their tracks right and usually they sound better if left alone or very minimal effects used.
I think the focus should be on blending and making your own mash-ups to begin with because you learn far more that way and it teaches you to beat match , key & tempo match as well. Although I must admit that when starting out with Traktor and being confronted with 30+ effects its tempting to go crazy but just have fun with it and record your mixes and play them back…your ears will tell you what works.
Please note this is just my humble opinion as a predominantly trance DJ..other DJ’s from other genres may feel differently about this and I totally respect that…

MemberThanks for that RealRasputin. Although it just occurred to me that the DJM 900 is wider than the 800 by about an inch, so I’m sure if the above set will work but interesting nonetheless.

MemberI think that there’s a certain stigma attached with an artist becoming “commercial”. For the more die hard and knowledgable fans “commercial” is a dirty word. Underground is cool, it’s more hip, it makes you feel like you’re in the know and part of a smaller community that “gets it”. When things become commercial or aimed at mass appeal they lose a lot of that…but I guess for the artist you lose some fans at the expense of gaining others.

MemberAll I can say is RESPECT, i don’t know how you guys did it ! After reading this post I had a go at it just to see what it was like…needless to say I found it really difficult and sucked ! I found that I had to be thinking 3 – 4 steps ahead of where I was and had to concentrate really hard. I can see exactly what you were saying Kranic.

MemberHaving just watched the documentary / movie / bio thing the other night I guess I have a little bit more insight into his past now. One thing I particularly didn’t like about it was the over-use of his A-list celeb R&B / Rap mates telling us over and over AND OVER again about how great he is ! We got that message after the 12th time Kelly Rowland and Usher said it. Talk about mutual admiration society. The feeling I get is that most of them see this as just an “electronic phase”, the “hip thing to do at the moment”, do they really understand the culture and passion of the EMD community ? Just my two cents

MemberThanks for that softcore. Sorry for late reply, I’ve been trying to do a bit more background reading on what you said. I didn’t realise about the non support of VST so thank you for that. Although doesn’t Reason come with its own instruments and effects already ? Would it be ok to use Reason if I were just re-mixing as opposed to producing from scratch ? Which program would you recommend ?

MemberIn fairness to Pauly D , he was a DJ with a regular residency before he became famous.
He caught a massive break sure but good luck to him I say.eros
MemberI’ve heard mixed things about it….granted from die hard trance purists who feel that Americans don’t understand that type of music. I think that’s a bit unfair considering they have guys like Christopher Lawrence and Nicholas Bennison.
Personally I hope it does evolve as it can only be good for the scene, but I agree with D-Jam I think it’s for the likes of the new Tiesto & Guetta and all about commercial appeal for the masses rather than catering to purists.

Member@Phil Morse: Alix, can you do me a mixtape of your influences please?
Funniest comment I’ve read all day Phil ! Ahhh just gotta love that cynical streak !
As for Guetta..I’ve really got mixed feelings about this guy; but at the end of the day
he’s succeeded in doing what he loves and making a shit load out of it so hats off to the guy.As for his mixing…I’m guessing this video is a fake surely ? If it’s not then he’s badly
in need of a “SYNC” button !
