MemberLew, post: 1468 wrote: Hmmm… That does sound to me like the beginning of a disk failure. These things can tend to be intermittent at the start, which could explain why it suddenly started working again. BTW, I work in technical support so I can understand why they’d initially ask you to reformat the disk as it would help to rule out a simple corruption problem. Obviously if you get the problem again after reformatting then it helps them to justify a hardware fix or replacement.
If you have enough space on your C drive then you should copy your music there. Don’t try to copy the whole lot in one go, though; do it a folder at a time. This way, if the copy fails part way through it’s easier to tell how far you’d got so that you know what you still need to copy. If you only get some of the music copied across and the drive starts playing up again, disconnect the drive and leave it turned off for a couple of hours and then try again. Sometimes allowing the drive to cool down can get it working again for a while, long enough to rescue your files. When my external drive failed it took me about 10 attempts to get my data back before the drive died completely, but I was able to get most of my data back.
Thank You Lem; this is of Great Help :);
Obviously my Music is my Priority; but I have 30GB of Tutorial Videos (for Ableton); and Live DJ Sets going back to the ’80’s and if I were to lose them I Truly would be Devestated :(;
So tomorrow when I get back from my NHS Training I will begin to Transfer my Files (what and if it will allow me to) to my ‘C’ Drive; and of course there are some things that I can just take off and put on DVD; stuff I Know I will Always Want;
Thank God I wasn’t in the middle of Writing a Novel this time as I Lost a Complete Novel 2 years ago when my laptop Died;I will be Very Angry and Disatisfied with the Whole External Drive System if it is Dead though; as if we have to buy 2 External Drives (as is Recommended); just to have a Back-Up; it is a lot of money really;
That is me just ‘Sounding Off’ though because I can remember my Gran having an Amstrad 128K PC !Emma Partnow
MemberHello Mike :);
Cutting 3 Quarters of what is in your ‘Hold Box’ this week will take some Decisions;
We all have our Different Ways of ‘Accepting’ Tracks into our ‘Family’ (meaning Our/My Collection) :);
I usually consider these Options;
1: Do ‘I’ Want it and I Don’t Care what Anyone Else Thinks – meaning this is for My Pleasure
2: Will it Mix with something I already Have – have I Discovered 2 Similar Basslines/Drum Tracks
3: Can I play this in a Mix Set and Where – is it an ‘Early’; ‘Mid’; or ‘Late’ Session Track
4: Where can I Play This – is it Acceptable to ‘All’ or just a ‘Small Niche’ of peopleIt is a Great Question Mike; and How others (and Why) Buy their Tracks would be Cool Information 🙂

MemberHello Lew :);
Thank You for your Help;
What happened last night was ‘Suddenly’ out of Nowhere; my CPU went up to 100%; and my External Drive had this Orange loading Bar at the top of the window that just went on Forever;
When I pressed the ‘Start’ button to see what was going on I couldn’t even Access my ‘C’ Drive or even the ‘Control Panel’; and there was a Lot of Noise coming from the External Drive; I Restarted my laptop and it all went Quiet again; but as soon as I Selected my External Drive (I was able to Access ‘My Computer’ after the Restart); my CPU shot up to 100% again; and all I had Access to was my email and Internet (which was Fortunate); but of course it is my Music I am concerned about Mostly;
The Drive still has one more Years Warranty; but of course they will just tell me to Reformat before I send it back;
I Wish I had the Opportunity to Copy the Music to another External Drive; but I don’t have Access to one; my Music is only in fact 60GB or something and I have that Free on my ‘C’ Drive; and so I could do that at least – If the Drive allows me to Access it – as last night all I was trying to do was Copy a 100MB on my External Drive to a Different Folder on my External Drive :(;Emma Partnow
MemberChristopher A Johnson, post: 1442 wrote: This happens to me sometimes. Try using a different usb port on your computer. Or turn everything off, unplug it, boot up and wait for the pc to finish before connecting the drive. Or if you can play songs and see the drive connected it’s time to buy a new hard drive. Download Beyond Compare to copy files to the new drive. Good luck.
Thank You Christopher :);
I will Definitely try the Different USB Port;
And this afternoon I tried the External Drive on my Foster Mother’s laptop and it worked Fine; so it is ‘Possible’ that this ‘Helped’;
I have doen a Scan on the Drive with Norton and StopZilla and nothing untoward was found;
Unfortunately I can’t afford Food right now; so a Replacement External is out of my Range 🙁Emma Partnow

No Problem Jem; thank You for Appreciating it :);
Once I saw (or Imagined) that nobody took any notice of it; I thought ‘I am not doing that again’;
But; to ‘Help Just One Person’ is enough for me to Feel Grateful; so Thank You 🙂Emma Partnow

MemberThank You Adam and DJ Steralize for your Kind Words; and for taking the time to Comment;
I have had 2 Courses of Chemotherapy; and Radiology (neither of which worked); and have been told I can’t have any further Chemotherapy as the Health Service can’t afford it; so it is just a case of how Lucky I am I thinkEmma Partnow
MemberMy Music Libray is in Danger of becoming NIL at the moment; as last night and this morning I could not even Access my External Drive :(; I am playing Tracks off of it at the moment; but the Thought of actually Moving a File from one place to another on the External Drive (which is what I was trying to do last night) just Fills Me With Fear – because all the Company who makes the External Drive tell you to do is Reformat it – and so I Lose 180GB of information 🙁

Memberellgieff, post: 1213 wrote: Emma, I meant people who play off physical media (“actual” records, and Audio CDs). Particularly some of the stuff about sound quality – seeing people running mixers in the red the whole time makes me cringe. And even some of the stuff about doing it for the music.
Although it’s also interesting to see the way people often put DVS DJs (like me) in a different category to “pure” physical media or “pure” digital DJs. It’s all just playing other people’s records, innit?
Thank You for explaining that my Friend; as I wouldn’t have known; but I still Adore my Physical Media :);
I have about 800CD’s; and around 300 Vinyl Records (which are now in the Attic – all in their Individual Plastic Sleeves); I have been Buying MP3 Files for a while now; but because I can ‘Manipulate/Destroy’ them in my Software they just don’t ‘Feel’ the Same as Vinyl or CD’s; as with that Media you got what you got and that was it; apart from when Vinyl Records ‘Jump’ I actually Love to hear the ‘Scratchy Sounds’ 🙂Emma Partnow

ha yer ok…:) what do you use to dj with? yer im thinkin about the hercules?Hello William :);
I always like to buy things where I Don’t have to go shopping for something else and spend More Money; so the Hercules Definitely fits that as it is an ‘All In One’; and also uses Software that you are already Familiar with :);
But; I haven’t used any of the DJ Consoles you mention so I can’t give an Opionion as to which is ‘Best’;
I Personally use ‘Ableton 8’ for my DJ’ing; and although it Definitely is the ‘Best’ in my Opinion; it costs Lots Of Money; and takes Months and Months of Studying trying to Learn it;
However; I have used VDJ; and Deckadance; and Traktor DJ Studio 3; and Torq; and I now Own Traktor Pro 2;
Traktor Pro 2 just has more Effects and ‘Shiny Knobs’ than Traktor DJ Studio 3 – which costs Much Less now – and Traktor is used by some World Class DJ’s;
But; VDJ is also Excellent for DJ’ing; and there are people on this Forum who still Prefer it over all the New Software; so; although I don’t think you asked me this question 🙂 … I would try to be ‘Your Best’ with what you have; and then get something ‘Better’ at a later date; but to buy a Shiny New Console (if you can afford it) to ‘House’ the Software You Know; is not a Problem at all; as we all Love New Things; and if it makes you Feel More Determined about your DJ’ing; then it is a Win Win Situation 😀Emma Partnow

hey were you able to watch, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CfsXE95iBk these are my better ones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJy-XoO6Ljo&feature=related 🙂Hello William :);
I am listening to your ‘Bomb’ Mix at the moment :);
And I have to repeat again; the ‘Stutter’ Technique you have Developed is Excellent :cool:;
I was wondering if you are not Confident at the moment about ‘Beatmatching’ whether you could incorporte your ‘Stutters’ into actual Transisitions between Tracks; as that would work Really Well;
After listening to the Mix I realise that the ‘Kid Kudi’ Track at the beginning; and the ‘TPain’ Track at the end; are the Same BPM; so if you were to Practice at Mixing these Tracks again; you would begin to be able to learn How to Beatmatch 2 Tracks from One to the Other – and you will Feel So Excited when you do it 🙂 :);
Oh :(; the second video I can’t watch because of the Country I am in (UK); I don’t know Why YouTube do that;
But; to carry on from the first Video; I like your Speeding up and Slowing down that you have got the hang of; and it is your ‘Own Creativity’ that makes you Decide when to do this; so you have Talent which is Really Important !
Try the 2 Tracks I mentioned and Mix them Together and you will get the Hang of Understanding what Speeds Tracks are Originally Recorded at; and Tracks with Similar Speeds are Always Great Markers for us when we don’t want to do a ‘Cut’ (Stop Dead) Mix 🙂Emma Partnow
MemberBenny Mackney, post: 1258 wrote: I can mix between tracks with two decks, but what do I use a third or fourth for unless I’m mixing stems (which at this stage, I am not)?
Hello Benny :);
When I first started DJ’ing I used the CD Player in my PC as my 3rd Deck; and 2 Cassette Decks as my 4th and 5th Deck; so for you to add another Deck to the 2 you already have; you just need to look for another Source of Audio; if you don’t have a laptop; this 3rd Source of Audio can even come from a Games Console; or even a Portable CD Player (as long as it connects to your Mixer);And on your 2nd Question regarding Vocals; I use a site called Acapellas4u
acapellas4u.co.uk
They allow you to download (Free) a number of Acapellas per month; and have a Search Engine; and a Collosol amount of Acapellas to Choose from – it is all Legal; so nothing Dodgy going on; just a Database of Acapellas we can use in our Production or DJ Sets 🙂I hope that Helps you a little :);

MemberI like the way you talk my Friend :);
Last year I was Fortunate to spend a couple of months talking to ‘Blu Peter’; and then ‘Ricky Worden’; who probably have 60 Years DJ’ing Experience between them; and everything was going Great; but then they began telling me what ‘Not’ to Play; and I found this Disturbing; as there are times when we just ‘Know’ that ‘This is The Track to Play Right Now’; and we (‘I’) can either be ‘Influenced’ and Subsequently Feel ‘Uncomfortable’ when we are playing a Track that another person has ‘Chosen’ for us; or we can be ‘Strong’ and go with our ‘Inner Voice’; and Unfortunately my Associations with these Friends ended as I wouldn’t do what they ‘Wanted’ me to do; but; I have to be Radical to be Individual; and I Feel it is Our ‘Self Respect’ that is the Most Important :);Emma Partnow
MemberAmpero, post: 1160 wrote: This is a great question.. most of my responses have been laid out by a few of you and I do love Emma’s input.
Oddly enough, just socially, alot of girls have come up to me or engaged convo around the ins and outs and learning the basics of DJing. So, unless theyre just that type of girl, I sense the stigma slowly breaking.. especially in an industry where ‘sex sells’ :rolleyes:That is Really Cool to hear DJ Ampero; about Females engaging you in Conversation about learning How To DJ; as it is this ‘Initial Interest’ that will take a Percentage from their ‘Shopping for Shoes’ to ‘Hands On A Mixer’; which is a Wonderful Thought :);
I DJ with some of the World’s Best DJ’s on my Radio Station (a Radio Station where I have a Permanent Residency – it is not ‘My Radio Station :)); and I Always Like to be Honest; so I will say that I am Never interested in hearing Suzy Solar’s Set (I Hope she Never sees this :)); but that is not through ‘Bitchiness’; I think there are a couple of reasons; One being that she Only plays Trance; and I like to Vary Genres that I play in my Sets; and Two; that is Extremely Important that ‘I’ am not ‘Influenced’ (and therefore ‘Deflated’) by another Female who DJ’s All Over The World; and has a Calender that is Full;
I Wish to Develop and Evolve with my Own ‘Style; Technique; and Creativity’; and Feel that in order to be ‘Successful’ I Must Not just ‘Follow’ a Female who has already ‘Made It’ as such;
I am not sure if that made sense as I am getting a little Tired now; but if I had a ‘Mentor’ (a little like a Tennis Coach) then I would Certainly be Happy to be ‘Heavily Influenced’ by their Experience; but DJ’ing ‘Alone’ as Most of us do; gives us the Opportunity to ‘Grow’ just as a Baby takes their First Steps Alone; and just like a Flower comes into Blossom when the ‘Time Is Right’ :);Emma Partnow
