Membermr_john, post: 1544 wrote: I started producing about a year ago (by started I mean fooling around with garageband) I made some basic tracks but didn’t care for them enough to keep them around. Then I discovered ableton, which then led me to Reason. Love both of them. I’m still learning how to use them, especially reason. But I like it more than Djing. Djing strikes me as a way to actually “make it” though. And would no doubt help get my productions out there. I’m currently reading the dance music manual, which is incredible btw, and that’s really helped me understand what all those buttons and knobs do on those synthesizers.
It does get extremely overwhelming though. Sitting, staring at that blank page, having some idea in your head but not being 100% sure how to make it happen. I’ve been taking a break from it recently and focusing on mixing. I just want to learn it all right away :p but it takes a lot of time.I have Ableton 8 and Reason 5; and I ‘Know’ that feeling of sitting looking at a Blank Page Very Well :);
I don’t know if this will help you; but what I have done recently is to Build Templates for Both Ableton and Reason; which in Ableton contains a Kick Drum Track; Snare; Hi-Hats; and Percussion (which I have already Composed from Loops); 3 Empty Bass Tracks; and then a further 8 Empty Tracks; All these Tracks have their Own EQ Eight on them; and it just means that I have ‘Something’ rather than an ‘Empty Page’ to work with when I begin;
In Reason I have again made a Template which contains the Instruments I ‘Know’ I will be using as a Skeleton (Favourites such as the M-Class Mastering Suite; followed by the 14 Channel Mixer; then Kong – with a Favourite Drum Loop that is being Sequenced by a Redrum – ; then a Subtractor followed by a Matrix (which will run the Substracto); then a Thor followed by an RPG-8 (which will run the Thor); then a Malstrom; followed by a Dr OctoRex; then an NN-19 Sampler and an NN-XT Sampler; finishing off with a Scream 4; this gives me an Opportunity to begin Composing straight away;But for me; when I feel I am stuck in a ‘Writers Block’; I take ‘Time Out’ by just listening to Tracks for a few days 🙂

Thank You jezalenko :);
I did Qualify today as a Recruitment and Selection Officer for the National Health Service;
Saying that I ‘would Qualify’ 2 days before the actual Training could have been seen as ‘Presumptuous’ or just ‘Confidence’; but apart from the Number of Practical Exercises I was involved in; I managed to get 9 questions out of 10 Correct (and they were not just ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers); they were questions such as ‘Choose 3 from the following 14 which you feel are the Most Important Qualities and Necessities Required by a Level 6 Charge Nurse’; and these had to be ‘Marked’ by a Panel Of 3;
And so today was a Good Day 🙂Emma Partnow

MemberHello Adam :);
Another Great Question :);
We can only give our Personal Opinions here; but mine is this;
The ‘Reason’ I don’t use ‘DJ Dedicated Software’ anymore is Because of the ‘Sync Button’;
I Don’t like it; and I Don’t Trust it;
I may have learned (due to my Age) to DJ on Pioneer CDDJ’s; but Never Once did I use the ‘Sync’ or ‘Master’ Buttons or whatever they have; I Always Beatmatch by Ear – and I Trust my Ear – and if a Track doesn’t Work; I Accept it doesn’t Work and Move On;
I Use Ableton 8; and although there is a Facility to Warp Tracks so that they will ‘Fit’; if my Master Tempo is 128BPM (already decided by myself before I make a Set); and I have Tracks of 122BPM; 120BPM; 135BPM; and I Want to use them; I Make them Fit; through ‘Technique’ Not by using any ‘Tools’ that make things ‘Easier’ (Boring I call it); I have been using Ableton since Ableton 5 and so have a Lot of Experience now (although I am still Learning Daily) with this Programme; and I have Techniques that allow me to Mix ‘Very Different Tempo’s’ if I So Wish;
I Agree that there is a Debate over ‘Beatmatch’ or ‘Sync’; as there is a Debate over ‘Digital/Laptop’ and Vinyl;
Nobody will Ever ‘Win’ the Argument – not that I see there is any Argument to ‘Win’; as it is just ‘Individual Choice’ 🙂
I Love ‘Ellaskins; I have to say; (not Literally); but if there there was a man who made DJ Tutorials ‘Fun’ it is Him;
I don’t actually have a Dedicated Controller; but have 16/24 Buttons/Sliders/Dials on my Keyboard;
The Key (I Feel); to when a Track has just 30 Seconds left; is to ‘Know’ the next Track you are going to Mix in; this can be ‘Pre-Planned’; or if ‘Guided’ by the Audience; with a ‘Knowledge’ of our Tracks we ‘Know’ what will ‘Fit’ next and what Won’t;
To Some Degree DJ’ing is like ‘Chess’; we have to know (or at least have Thought of or Planned Our ‘Next Move’ – and even have a Number of ‘Back up’ Moves); but if the other Player (like the Audience) makes a Move we did not Anticipate; then this is where the ‘Knowledge’ of our Tunes comes in;
And Yes; Once More I Agree; Thinking On The Spot is ‘Invigorating’ and also ‘Challenging’; and Keeps Us Busy 🙂 🙂Emma Partnow
MemberWOW !!
You are a Champion Adam :);
It wasn’t the Track you pointed me to; but; it was the Correct Artist; as when I looked at her other Tracks; there was one called
‘On top Of The World’; which is the Actual Track I was after; so that is a Definite Buy; and I can now go to bed Happy 🙂 :);
Thank You So Much xx(For anybody else interested; the Track is ‘Ninca Leece – On Top Of The World’)

MemberHello Adam :);
Yes; I have heard of something for Apple Phones; but I don’t have one of those;
And I read of some Free Software for PC the other night; but you have to have a Microhone that you put in front of the Speaker; but; it does say it will Identify Virtually Anything; so I would Definitely Recommend it;
But for now; I will have to rely on Our DJ Ears and Memories 🙂Emma Partnow
MemberAdam Sharizman, post: 1484 wrote: Wow.. Emma, can’t you somehow access it? Maybe you can have an IT friend to help check it for you?
Hello Adam :);
There is a Computer Shop nearby if nothing I can do works; but of course they don’t Understand the Importance of Our Music;
I asked them at Christmas if I could just buy one of their External Drives and they Transfer the Data from Mine to the New One (which seemed – though Expensive – a Win Win for Everyone); but they weren’t very Reassuring that they could do this;
It is Very Odd that it worked on my Foster Mother’s laptop today – she has Vista; I have Win7 – but although I am playing a Track now from the External Drive (in Windows Media Player); the Orange Loading Bar at the top of the Screen for the External Drive is still Loading and Loading 🙁
If I can (More than Anything Else) get my Ableton Projects; the Radio Shows I have done; and my Remixes off of there tomorrow; I could live with having to build a New Music Collection again (as my Sony Vaio Destroyed itself in November with 6,000 Tracks on; and that was a ‘Crying Event’
But; I Hope i will have Much More Hopeful News for you tomorrow 🙂Emma Partnow

I was asked to look after 4 Rats for a Friend; and it was a Really Lovely Time (and So Sad when they had to go back);
I Remember I used to let them have a run around in the Bath whilst I Cleaned their Cages; and the Screams I used to hear when people went to the Toilet still make me Laugh and Laugh now 😀 😀June 29, 2011 at 12:08 am in reply to: Apart from your DJ gear, what's one item you wouldn't be without at your gigs? #1494Emma Partnow

The Company were not very Helpful last time I spoke to them (at Christmas); but that was because the Drive wouldn’t accept my Password; but as I had a New Laptop I didn’t realise the Caps Lock was on until I took it to a Computer Shop 😀Emma Partnow
