While grabbing some pizza I crossed path with a friend of mine. We are not the closest friends but we talk here and there. While me and him were talking about where I live he tol me he has a whole house between him and his friends. Before leaving I reminded him that I Dj and if he through a party that Ill set him up with a good price. He then told me that his sister promotes for Red Bull and they are planning to throw a party at a bar pretty soon and they needed DJs. I told him to hit me up later and we can talk about it. Today he texted me and told me that his sister needed 3 DJs for the event. He then told me it was a DJ competition. I sh*tted enough bricks to build a couple buildings. Where I live is a college town with a couple bars. In the music scene in the town, there is about 3-4 known djs that I know might be there. They all work with the standard Techs 1200’s and Rane Mixer working off Serato. I in the other hang, I’m using a mixtrack pro and a X1 with a non-DJ soundcard. I know equipment doesnt matter but I feel that I wont be seen as a “standard” DJ. I’m I like to be different than others not jsut in music but in life. So what do you guys think I should do? Take it or Leave it?

    Hello my Friend 🙂
    I would Suggest taking a Good 20-30 Minutes on your Own with a bit of paper and write down the ‘Pro’s and Con’s’ of Competing in this Event;
    I was then going to go on and ‘Suggest’ some Pro’s and Con’s; but that is Not For Me To Do;
    It is Important you make the Correct Decision For You;
    But Bear In Mind that Originally you were just Enquiring about DJ’ing at a Friend’s House

    Rob Francis, post: 6644 wrote: This Saturday I am DJing at a house party at my best friend’s house. There will be a fair few people there, most of whom I know, and I am the only DJ playing from around 8pm until whenever it finishes. It will be an “up for it” party in that there will be many people consuming various substances (not me). So I expect to be able to finish at around 4am, maybe later.

    Obviously as the only DJ and with so much time to play I get to play lots of styles and its up to me to make it a proper party. That’s no problem, I’m prepared and have lots more preparation to do this week.

    The dilemma is this: my wife is at the party too; we’ve arranged babysitters for our son and will be spending the night in a hotel nearby. My wife has bought new lingerie and has dropped hints that she wants to spend some time together at the hotel after the party (you know what I mean). My wife is unlikely to keep going until 4am – I think midnight might be her limit. So at midnight she is going to want me to pack up and go back to the hotel.

    Do I stay at the party which will be in full flow at that point in time? Or do I turn off the tunes, pack up and go back to fulfil my marital duties?

    What do I do??? :confused:

    I am Single; but have been Married; and from your Wife’s Point Of View; in her mind (having bought something Special for your time in the Hotel away from the Children); I Feel that although she Respects You as a DJ; the fact that you are going there Together means that She will be ‘Involved’ or at least ‘Cared For’ in some way;
    And as the word ‘Compromise’ has already been used; I Must Agree; I Feel that you have to find a way to ‘Manage’ Both Of Your Duties; As A DJ; and As A Husband; your Friend will Understand that you have A Number Of Hours to give to Him and the Party; but then; at a ‘Designated Time’ you Must Shoot Off as you are With Your Wife;
    And I Feel that Both Your Wife And Your Friend Need To Be ‘Aware Of The Designated Time’;

    (Although, do you have any non-dubstep on your soundcloud Emma? If so, I’d be keen to hear it!)

    Yes 🙂
    In my Signature; where it says ‘SoundCloud (Radio Shows)’; I have a 1 Hour Radio Show up there; but have just put up my First Ever Mash-Up – that is Not Dubstep (about 5 Days ago); and again in my Signature; where it says ‘YouTube (Remixes)’; I have 21 Remixes up there that are also Not Dubstep :);

    I’ve been away of vacation and just got back. Feels like FOREVER that I’ve posted here. Anyways, lets get to the good stuff.

    I went to a bar/lounge that played rock music. The owner is a friend of my cousins and we hit it off, super cool guy. One thing I noticed was that the music they were playing was just an iTunes shuffle situation. I asked him if they ever had a DJ play and he said yes but it involved a mix of rock and EDM (and turns out it wasn’t too successful). I offered to mix a few rock-only tracks together so he can test it out and see if he likes it (via mixcloud).

    Has anyone done a rock mix here? I’ll be giving it a shot later this week while I still recover from liver destruction and sleep deprivation. :confused:

    Welcome Back Mike 🙂
    You have been Missed;
    I have a ‘Rock’ Mix here I haven’t completed yet; it was just an Experiment; but includes;
    Balck Sabbath; Deep Purple; Pink Floyd; Uriah Heep; Def Leppard; Judas Priest; Led Zepplin; Limp Bizkit;
    And it is Mad but Cool too 😎

    jezalenko, post: 6637 wrote: You have some good points there Emma. However, what I was trying to say is that there a large number of “wannabe” DJs out there today, and if you want to succeed, you have to differentiate yourself in as many ways as possible, not just your music. While for people like Carl Cox or Tiesto origionally had “DJ” in their names, it was the fashion back then to do this. (Hey, even “DJ Phil Morse” is just “Phil Morse” these days :))

    That said, if you came up to me in the street and said “I’m Lukas van der Westhuizen and I play house/electro/tech/trance music”, I’d think thats pretty cool. As some of my duties as part of a universtiy DJ club, we have a lot of wannabe DJs coming up to us and begging for gigs. I’d say 90% of them have DJ or numbers in their DJ name, and this tends to make me think that everyone is like this, so I dont even bother to listen to their horrible youtube mixes. (see here for what I mean). When the other 10% “seem” different, I actually listen to what they send me, and some of them get gigs.
    So what I’m trying to say is – Be Different!

    Yes; he would have been Better Off calling himself ‘Demon Dubz’; but that Name is Taken 🙂
    And My Goodness; that is Not The Way to Mix Dubstep or Any Other Genre 😳
    Yes; and I Agree; that Must have been How It Was back in them days; because there are So Many people I could mention who ‘Did’ have the DJ Title; but in the Top 100 DJ’s; only One Person has DJ Before their Name now;
    Unfortunately I think I have Destroyed My Reputation by Experimenting with Dubstep; and should have just stuck with Everything But Dubstep (although it Literally Saved My Life a few months ago so is Important to me); as my Fan Base has Dropped Considerably; and this where we get onto the Subject of Different Names for Different Productions; which I also Feel is Credible; and is something that is Not Unusual;
    But; I have Messed Up; I have to Take Responsibility; and Now I Have To Suffer 🙁

    Hello Salacum 🙂
    My Step-Father has his Own Label and Publishing Company;
    But it depends what you are going to do with this Label;
    Whether you are going to put out your Own Tracks; or put out Other People’s Tracks; or Both;
    If you are going to use the Label to put out your Own Material you have to be Careful of not falling into the Trap of ‘Self Publishing’ as Authors Often Do; as you are Responsible for the Cost Of Everything; and you will Still Need to Find A Distributor for your Product/Material; (unless you are just going to ‘Hope’ that it sells on Beatport etc);
    With Other People’s Tracks; again I Must Stress that ‘Unless’ you are going to ask the Artist to put ‘All Monies Up Front’; which isn’t Very Businesslike; Your Label will be Responsible for All Costs; and the Artist will Expect A Good Service;
    So; All Advertising; Publishing; Art Work; and the Paying of a Distributor will be Down To You;
    Obviously there are Great Gains from an Independant Label that becomes Successful; and I am Sure that this is Your Goal; but again there will be Solicitors Fees as Artists will be Signing Over Their Material to You for Some Years; and if they Feel they can get a Larger Audience (through Bigger Exposure) by Signing to Another Label; then it is Important that Monies are Put Aside for this Eventuality of Court Cases Dragging On And On;

    However; Research Each Step Well; With Confidence; and I am Certain You Will Get There 😎

    -Dont prefix your name with “DJ” that’s a little too corny/obvious. Unless you’re a scratch DJ from tha ‘hood.

    ***DISCLAIMER****
    This is all my personal opinion, feel free to ignore/criticise/applaude as you wish.

    I think we have to look (to some Degree) at a Person Starting Out (a Person or a DJ ?);
    As Tiesto was called ‘DJ Tiesto’ for a Number Of Years; as was Carl Cox also called ‘DJ Carl Cox’;
    In the Beginning of a Person’s Career; it is Possible/More Likely that the ‘DJ’ Title will get them More Recognition;
    The ‘DJ’ Title can Certainly be Dropped once a Person has Gained Some Exposure/Recognition; or Moved into Remixing or Production; (as Tiesto and Carl Cox Both did); or maybe Times Have Moved On I don’t know;
    As a Female we are Lucky if we get 1% the Exposure of a Male; just because of ‘The Business’ we are in;
    And ‘Initially’; Without the ‘DJ’ Title (unless we Begin in Production making the DJ Aspect Irrelevant); our ‘Chances’ of being ‘Heard’; or even ‘Accepted’ could Possibly be Even More Minimal;

    I think SoundCloud is only good for tracks, but sucks for DJ mixes. I wish DJs would stop trying to put their stuff on there and just use MixCloud and/or MixCrate.

    Hello D-Jam 🙂
    I still have yet to check out MixCrate;
    And I have yet to Upload a Mix to MixCloud; but doesn’t MixCloud seem ‘Dead?’ (in the sense of Very Limited Traffic);
    I was also wondering (having read the T&C of MixCloud) what happens when I have Tracks Within my Mix that are ‘Not’ For Sale; in the sense that they have yet to be Signed; or by Artists who Wish Not to be Signed ?
    Will MixCloud just Reject my Mix ?

    When I chose the name I checked if there wasnt another DJ with that name on facebook and url, in regards with using only my real name, there are already a DJ Lukas I thought of using my name and surname (Lukas van der Westhuizen) but that is too long and difficult to pronounce 😀

    Now if you said to me:
    Lukas van der Westhuizen
    I would have said WOW ! Go for it Definitely; as that is Distinct; Unique; and And Memorable 😎 😎
