MemberD-Jam, post: 4891 wrote: I think with club and rave DJing, there are certain “levels” you achieve that more or less decide how much of a say you have.
When you’re a nobody and some bar or club is bringing you out to play music to the crowd, then you’re expected to take requests because you’re the one hired to please the people the owner or promoter brings you.
However, when you achieve a level where YOU are the one bringing the crowd out, then you can dictate things. If 500 people show up to hear you play, and one girl is making a hissy-fit because you won’t change the music for her, anyone will agree the masses call the shots. So if the room wants hip-hop and the one girl wants reggae, then majority rules and she should accept it or leave and go to a reggae venue.
I think too many people, especially girls, simply make requests out of a desire to “feel special”. They really don’t care about anything other than feeling like a big-shot because they can ask the DJ for things and he’ll do it.
As a DJ, if you don’t like requests, then either stay out of most avenues where it’s required, be a bedroom DJ, or build up a following to the point that they’ll side with you before some trixie with a princess complex. It’s like gladiators…whoever has control of the crowd can dictate the rules.
I stand by my Original Response to this Video; although I Accept Everyone has their Own Views;
I Don’t Take Requests and that’s the End Of It as far as I am Concerned;
However; the Reason I am ‘Quoting’ D-Jam is the fact that I noticed that the Male this woman was with who Requested ‘Reggae’ (I wonder if she Actually ‘Knew’ what Reggae Actually Is); jumped in and initially began Defending Her (as if she was ‘Correct’); but also ‘Attempted’ to Incite ‘Other Patrons’ Against Kid Capri;
This I Feel is Totally Wrong; as if she is Unable to Stand Up For Herself; or Accepts the ‘Hulk Attitude’ of her Partner; then this is a Very Sad Affair for her; but also a Very Sad Affair for the ‘Genius In the Booth’ Whomever He or She may be; as an ‘Incident Similar to This’ but Involving 20 Males Confronting Me; Actually in My Booth; it is a Practice that I would like to see Stamped Out to be Truthful;
And though it would be Easy to say ‘This is the World Of DJ’ing; Accept it or Get Out’; this would Actually be quite a Narrow Minded View in my Opinion; I See The World from the ‘Top Down’ Not from the ‘Bottom Up’;
Carl Cox played ‘Tomorrowland’ in Belgium last weekend; and used Basically 5 Loops (and some ’80’s Soul House) throughout the Whole 2 Hour Set; but if You (meaning Anyone) Don’t Like It; Go Somehwere Else;July 28, 2011 at 12:04 am in reply to: A new way to monetise your mashups and DJ mixes – Legitmix #4816Emma Partnow
MemberThis looks Excellent to me π
However; having Signed Up and received an Activation Code; and read All the information on the Site; including the FAQ and the Terms & Conditions; I still can’t see How or Where to Upload a Remix; of which I have Made over 20;
I have all the Files for the Remixes on my Hard Drive so I Don’t have a Problem; it is just the Consumer who would have a Challenge if I use a Version of a Track they Don’t Have; this is where the Consumer Cannot Play the Remix (or even Hear it) until they Buy (from Legitmix) the File they are ‘Missing’ to Complete All the Parts of the Remix; and; if I Use a Bootleg that isn’t in the Legitmix ‘Database’ then I am Unable to Upload a Remix to their Site at all;
So; until I can find a way to Upload something it is not Very Useful; however; it is in a ‘Beta Stage’ right now;Emma Partnow

Hopefully More people will give it a Listen too πEmma Partnow
MemberHello Dan and Rob π
If you go to the Top Of The Bar Underneath where it says ‘Search’; you will see Your Name;
If you Hover your Mouse Button over Your Name; a List will come up in a Box ‘Attached to your Name’;
If you Press ‘Preferences’ a New Screen will Open;
If You Uncheck the Top 2 Boxes in the Section called ‘Options’ this will ‘Turn Off’ Email Notifications;
However (as Rob is probably finding); Whenever You Post in a Thread or (Most Likely) Create a Thread; ‘Below’ Your Post you will see the Same 2 Options you saw in Your Preferences;
You Must Uncheck these 2 Boxes Also if you Do Not Wish to Receive Email Notifications πEmma Partnow

Oh; I didn’t mean anything against the Forum my Friend; it was just Cool that you supplied an Ableton Set Link (which includes the Scratching Template I also have – but haven’t Mastered yet :));
I just find ‘Conflict’ Difficult Sometimes πEmma Partnow

For playing over a club PA to a packed room of pissed-up punters, not necessary.So 128 or 192Kbs MP3’s are also Cool ?

MemberBeatmaster Mills, post: 4784 wrote: I guess what would be the most helpful to me is shadowing another DJ for a couple gigs, just to see the whole process top to bottom. I’m sure I can figure it all out my my own, but it would be helpful
Yes; I Completely Understand Mills;
I brought my Nephew into my Studio when he was 12 and began teaching him How to Mix with CDDJ’s;
But I was Talking to him through the Whole Process; and I was ‘Insistent’ that he Took Full Notes;
After Each Transition (a Single Transition I would Perform and then Repeat 6 Times); I would take him through the Whole Process again; but Much More Slowly; and with ‘His’ hands on the Decks;
He may have been a Member Of My Family; but I Felt it Important (because he Asked Me To Teach Him) that he Understood there was a ‘Job To Be Done’; and a ‘Process To Follow’ to get From A to B;The Only ‘Challenge’ I Envisage of you Watching a DJ in a Booth Live; is that the person won’t be able to ‘Explain’ to you in Detail ‘Why’ he is Manipulating ‘This Switch’; or ‘What’ Effect will Turning ‘This Knob’ make to the Overall Sound;
I only say this because when I watch DJ’s on B@TV (Shameless Promotion – but the Best Site on the Internet apart from DDJT); I see their Hands Flashing All Over The Mixer; and there isn’t ‘Time’ to see ‘What’ he has Done before he is ‘Doing Something Else’My Nephew has just come back from DJ’ing at the Ibiza Rocks Festival; but he HAD to Get that First; Second; Third; Fourth; Fifth (and On and On) Transition To Perfection (not in One Night Of Course :)); before I would Persuade My Sister to Buy Him First Set-Up; now he is A Very Happy Man (and I Am Sat In My Bedroom :rolleyes:);
How ‘You’; and ‘Any Man/Woman ‘Becomes’ a DJ is when they say;
‘That is a Cool Transition There; But Listen To How Much Better ‘I’ Feel It Sounds When You Do It This Way’ πEmma Partnow

http://djwelly.net/blog/?p=29This is Excellent my Friend π
I am So Pleased I am not over on that other DJ Forum or I would be having a Heart Attack Defending Ableton;
But you have Supplied a Perfect ‘Backhand’ to the man in the ‘Article’; because it is ‘Not What You Have; It Is What You Do With It’; and I Don’t think Anyone will be Disagreeing with me on that Statement πEmma Partnow
MemberWell; as I have been informed I am allowed to use the word ‘Dick’; then I will;
What A Dick Head !In the Full Article; he later goes on to say;
Would you ever convert to the laptop?
Wherever technology goes, if youβre going to DJ youβve got to have the skill. I would be doing myself wrong. Itβs just like cheating. I may come to a point where I do use a laptop but Iβll be DJing, βcause that to me is the art. Itβs a skill and there are so many of my heros that have done it before me that I could never disrespect it.So; to use his Own Words …
He says; “If I Do Use A Laptop I will be DJ’ing because it is an Art; it’s a Skill”
So; Contary to his Overall View of DJ’s who Use Laptops; Somehow he will be Reinventing The Wheel; and be the Only DJ in The World who will be DJ’ing With A Laptop ‘Skillfully’; maybe he Won’t Be Using Any Software ?What A Dick Head !

MemberU31, post: 4712 wrote: Well, its taking a while to warp or Beatgrid my tracks, one of the main reasons i didnt get on with Traktor over VDJ, with VDJ i can waveride / headphone cue a track and nudge it in beat in miliseconds, so why bother beat gridding?
But with Ableton i can actually see a means to an end to warping properly. Its very early days yet but i love it so far.
I am Here Every Day my Friend; and am Willing to Help You with Screenshots again Whenever and as Often as you Need :); if you have 1000,s of Tracks as I do; until I Know I am going to be Using them in a Set;
I just place a Warp Marker on the First Beat of Each Track;
Right Click and Set this Warp Marker as 1.1;
Delete the First Warp Marker that Ableton Sets (usually right at the Start of the Track – even if there is No Sound);
Right Click the Warp Marker we have Placed and ‘Select’ Warp Straight From Here;
Press Save in the ‘Sample Box’ (as this is now Our Correct BPM);
And then go on to another Track;When I want to pull out say 30 Tracks for a 2 Hour Set; it is then that I will go into the Track in More Detail; adding Additional Warp Markers if Necessary π
