  • in reply to: Importance of Mixing in Key? #17716

mixing in key is great if you like long smooth mixes in techno, house ext. I created some pretty epic moments by mixing two heavy melodic tracks together in key. Though it shouldn’t be the most important thing, it sounds great to my ears and makes it sound so much smoother imo 🙂

soundcloud and the suggestions that youtube gives, they’re actually not that bad.

Thinking about this and a ‘standard’ for controllers: I’m imagining tPioneer (or more likely) A&H coming out with a professionally built, sort of xone 4D advanced type mixer/controller which you can load your own mappings to (via sd card like the Pio CDJ units with cue points) and which is compatible with all major software. That will be the new standard. It might be up to the hardware manufacturers to come up with a standard for cue point files ect.

Or they might they come up with a small slimline yet professional controller setup up next to their mixer again compatible with all major software.

I think the crux for a new industry standard is some sort of ability for DJs to just load up their own mappings in to the controller/mixers in the clubs via a simple method, again like a SD card and then just plug in the laptop and rock!

Serato, Traktor, Pio, A&H and Denon should just have a meeting and set a standard format, just like a SIM card which is used by all carriers and manufacturers.

I like the modular approach hope they will be compatible with Serato!

in reply to: My DJ software is __________, and this is why… #13306

I use Serato Intro at the moment. My mixtrack pro came with VDJ, but it was sort of glitchy for some reason I couldn’t figure out, so I downloaded the new Serato Intro. I like the parallel waveforms a lot. Tried Traktor as well, didn’t find it very inuitive or easy to work witj, though that might by cause of the bad job I did mapping it… and that’s the strength of Searto, it’s just plug and play, I don’t want to be messing around with mappings.

hahaha thanks! Yeah I’ve actually never been to it (shame on me), but I’ve heard some great things about it from some people I know, should check it out soon! 🙂

I think i downloaded a early version of Virtual DJ. I was trying to mix indie rock with completely different BPM: of course it sounded terrible. Didn’t understand anything. Sync button gave me weird results.

tip to the total beginner: the sync button doesn’t work all the time. 😛

Yeah, this site has taught me so much, hope to contribute to it 🙂

in reply to: Switching genres: how and how often? #12492

Always read the crowd, every party is different. One of the few gigs I’ve done was for ‘oldtimers’ (60+) it was great fun to watch them go crazy on chubby checker the one moment and then see everybody waltzing the next. Though don’t switch genres every song, give people a chance to adjust and get in the groove for a bit, then read your crowd and when the eneryg drops or changes switch it up,

i think guidelines on what feedback should encompass would be usefull, although with perfect mixes I guess there isn’t a whole lot to say except for ‘sweeeet’ or something 🙂
