Memberi think you missed the point i was trying to make. If someone is content making their loot being a juke box, go right ahead, but if you want to consider yourself a “specialist” dj of any genre (or genres) then you should do that to the best of your ability. I myself, would never go out and purposely look for gigs (or take any for that matter) that didnt fall into my speciality. it wouldnt be fair to myself, or the crowd. if i did that i would then consider myself a “crowd whore” cos in my eyes, that doing everyone a dis-service. part of what i ‘love about being a dj, is i get to enjoy my music and get to show that love to other fans, therefor, if i ain’t feeling what i’m supposed to be doing, then my very demeanor will convey that. and further more, the temptation of doing what is natural may pull through (as it probably did with the the young gentleman at the Spaghetti Disco) and so you might stray into doing something not fit for the crowd.

Memberwhen i do my mixes, i try to develop a theme. think of it as a movie with an intro, back story, plot, climax, and an end. think of q-berts wave twisters, it tells a story with out using words. is your mix for rocking out in the car, chillin at home, or house party? this will help set the tone and give you a better idea of your track selection complete with build ups and come downs etc. try plotting you mix like that with a theme in mind and you might find yourself surprised at what you come up with.

Memberwhile mixing in key sounds great, i have found over the years that it doesnt make or break adancefloor, most people dont hear the key of a track, dance floors for the most part react to the beat (or bpm) and there for is the energy of the track that provides the bang, as i mainly play hiphop key really isnt all that important and so i dont bother with it

MemberIn my past i’ve had alot of similare scenarios, my first sugesstion is build the interest in the venue. Try to make yourself a secondary bonus. If you touts the venues finer points, the management will love you for it. Once you have a semi-established crowd, get them involved. Make them feel as though the night is for them. Start a FB page for your night, and ask what they’d like to see. Sit down with the managements and come up with various different drink options and themes for different nights. College kids love a good toga party or pimps n ho’s throw down. Invite dj friends to play one hour special sets. If you get the crowd involved and start to make every week an event, and not your standard “lets go out get sloshed and listen to music night” you will find your crowd will grow quickly and word will get around. I did one night called “dapper daegos” we all dressed like proper old skool gangsters, i played the theme from goodfellas and the god father and offered drinks specials to match. You would believe what some of the girls showed up in 😉 If the venue management what to make a proper run at the other bar, you gotta take risks and offer more than they do. Slinging around free mix cd’s at the bar will help as well so have a few on hand to give away, include a flyer with each one so they remeber who you are and where they saw you. It works a right treat. unfortuneatly, ya gotta whore yourself for a bit, but stay true, keep your shit on lock, and be prepared to take a beating for a bit… but like field of dreams… build it and they will come. Good luck

Memberi hate to say it but any of the new david guetta stuff, its all house based with popular artist like rhianna and such, flo rida works well too…. and depending on what your using (dvs cdjs etc.) loops are your friends… top 40 crowds arent really all that concerned with mixing… they want the tracks they hear on radio… so think builds and echo/flanger transitions.. top 40 crowds also expect to hear you on the mic a bit.. so beef up on that as well… dont be afraid to drop older top 40 tracks as they will still move a crowd…maybe even more so than the newer ones as theyve been around a lil longer and people know all the words and will swing along…. and if all else fails.. black eyed peas will pull people to the dance floor
