ParticipantThanks very much for the information. It makes a lot of sense, so I’ll avoid them. These are a better make and have a cross over built in http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ex-Display-Peavey-Pro-Sub-MK2-Subwoofer-15-Passive-PA-DJ-Bass-Bin-Prosub-SINGLE-/190776114038?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Speakers_Monitor&hash=item2c6b247b76
Again grateful for your advice
Thanks
Regards
Don

ParticipantI found some REALLY cheap bass bins here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1000W-Ekho-MAX15SUB-15-Subwoofer-Bass-DJ-Disco-PA-Sound-System-Karaoke-Party-/121074515256?_trksid=p5197.m1997&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D16%26meid%3D7399016568563806902%26pid%3D100016%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D151026159844%26 and was thinking of adding them for some gigs I am planning to run. The main Ekho website isn’t great, errors in what’s written don’t inspire confidence. Some searches seem to relate these to Rokit speakers, and my DJ partner had some of their powered monitors and had issues with them.
Hard to go wrong with such little money gambled do you think?donnyboybelfast@yahoo.co.uk
ParticipantI can see your point, the issue relates to knowledge or skill as much as to progress in terms of technology, or something that is simply new, but another thing about human nature I learned, again I hope I don’t offend with this, is that we tend to dress up our feelings and flesh them out with ideas. Instinct or emotion drives us in the main, but we like to think that we do a lot more thinking than we do.

ParticipantI used to DJ in my bedroom with Vinyl – late 90s, made friends with a guy who was DJing in clubs using CD and I called it sacriledge at the time. It’s similar in my mind to how I got in to grunge and Nu-metal or rap metal while many of my friends considered new or different rock and roll to be sacriledge – they all stayed faithful to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc, while I moved on with innovative rock groups who did something new. It’s human nature, you have conservative folk who like to stick with what is familiar, and adventurous people who are willing to try or accept something new. No offense intended, but a sign of intelligence is considered to be willingness to try new things…

ParticipantMy question is what is the difference between line level outputs on a DJ mixer, and balanced outputs on a PA mixer? As above I noticed a big difference between my mixer and my partners with our cheap PA (not as noticable with the better speakers). Would I still benefit from getting a PA mixer and connecting to Amp with XLR if my mixer sounds fine (to me)?

ParticipantI have been using a pair of passive 200W Skytec speakers for several years, and while the horn/tweeter has blown a few times (usually when you go for a comfort break meaning some idiot has got the mic, or when I loaned them to someone) they are great for the money – I was doing small venue parties with them and only had a complaint once where the acoustics of the room meant they weren’t loud enough. I still use them in combination with the larger LD speakers where we have a big room to cover and they compliment the LD speakers well meaning together they give a well balanced sound in my opinion. I really can’t fault them for the price at all, like I say had them 3 years or more and working as a Mobile Disco/DJ. I use a Stanton M304 mixer and KAM KXR600 amp with them, when my business partner uses his mixer (one bundled with his CDJs) the sound quality is noticably poorer, I think because the levels from his mixer aren’t as high.

ParticipantYou should do it, head over to Ireland – I’m guesssing from your name you have family ties of some sort to Ireland. I don’t know what you’re in to but there’s plenty of historical sites, castles, forts, standing stones (henges), stunning scenery – decent nightlife as the Irish do like to party, in a couple of weeks there’s the North West 200, our version of the Isle of Man TT road races, well one of our road races, we have lots, it is the biggest one here – bikes do over 200 miles per hour now on what are basically public roads in a small town

ParticipantI also recommend Audacity, but I also use Goldwave – you can get it from Oldversion.com – it has some useful features like batch processing, filters and effects – it’s shareware and does limit you to so many operations per use of the software, then you have to close it down and open again.

ParticipantWelcome from another noob

ParticipantIt’s almost May and I had to wear a heavy fleece under my raincoat while cycling to/from work – I see Spanish tourists wearing heavy coats in July here too mind you

ParticipantBelfast, Northern Ireland. It’s probably a bit colder here at the moment – cold breeze and April showers past few days
