We just finished up our group page. The long term goal of the DanceKraft collective would be to pour over into U St & Adams Morgan, ideally turning our monthly event into a weekly one at multiple locations. If you’re in the area, feel free to like the page and send an email to discipleofnietzsche@gmail.com if you are looking to get involved in the project. I was very satisfied with the DJs that this site has exposed me to thus far; in the last event I saw more skill behind decks than I’ve seen in most clubs around here.
I call any gig a success where I don’t accidentally press pause on the deck that’s playing out through the master 😉

ParticipantAlso, see if there is a local meetup group oriented towards DJ’s and EDM. They are usually very welcoming of people who are trying to learn!

ParticipantHell yes! The 03-30 event WILL rock. New mixes brewing in lab 🙂

ParticipantLooks like you have all the gear you need for now. The best thing to do is listen to a wide variety of music (edm and non-edm) and play an instrument (if you don’t already). All of this will broaden your musical skills which will help no matter what you are doing.
The next step is to find other DJ’s and musicians to talk to, share ideas, and play-out with.
Best of luck!

ParticipantI made the mistake of watching the very first episode of jersey shore, and Pauly D was billed as “the dj” back then – and his basic point about it was “all the girls want to go home with the DJ.” So, my guess is that he was just using it as a tool to score with girls and be popular then, and has just rolled with it as a paycheck ever since.

ParticipantThanks!

ParticipantWorking with your sound guy at the venue is important too. Respect the venue and their equipment – get there ahead of time to do a soundcheck if possible and set your volume levels accordingly.

ParticipantHell yes! Show was great. Crowd was great, and the other DJ’s killed it!

ParticipantYes, that’s exactly right.

ParticipantFrom my experience and observation, mixing hip hop is very different than EDM. Given the syncopated beats and near constant prescense of vocals in hip hop, simple slam mixes or scratch-mixes seem to be the best way to go. Rarely is there an extended build up or outro to mix into/out of, as you have no doubt observed.

ParticipantAll DJ’s must wear bell bottoms.

ParticipantIt’s too bad that service is like this these days. I put most of the blame on the store manager or owner. They are in charge of hiring and training. They probably want to hire someone for as little as possible, only train them to use the cash register, and that’s it. The days of knowledgeable techs and sales staff are basically gone.

ParticipantI got a tip from another DJ that seemed to work. His instructions where to sort by BPM, then copy and paste all the tracks into a new crate. That allows you to “tweak” the order of the tracks, because in the new crate, the lowest bpm is track #1, and so on.
