ParticipantBeen using a $70 pair of Sennheiser HD 205’s for the past 2 or 3 yrs. Works great, and I’m not paying an extra $200 to have a person’s name as part of the brand.

ParticipantAll good advice from the other posters. Don’t forget, 99% of the people dancing won’t remember the screw up after the next drop comes in. The only people who might remember are other dj’s.

ParticipantDamn labels. They almost always suck. I’ve been scolded by people who have told me that “They didn’t play techno in the early 90’s. They played ‘rave’ music.” OMG. I was there. I was dj’ing. We called it techno.
But, the controversy over labels is simply not worth it.

Participantthanks!

Participant95% of any mistakes you make will be unnoticed by the people there. Only you, and maybe the other DJ’s in the crowd will know. Go for it!

ParticipantGood points on both sides. Personally, I do not use the sync button. But, if you want to use it, by all means use it, it’s your controller and your software. But, the issue sometimes is that songs do not beatgrid well, and the software does not get the sync done correctly 100% of the time, so you need to be able to fall back on your ears. Just something to keep in mind.

ParticipantThese are both great things you have learned. When I started using serato via my twitch controller, I too was “mixing with my eyes” and it was always a couple of beats off, requiring more manual correction (I don’t use the sync function). Mixing with your ears, at least when dropping in the new track, is the way to go. For very tiny corrections, I will reference the waveform display, but that’s it.
As far as using the volume on the channels for mixing (with the fader left in the center), I am torn about this. I’d like to try it, but what I find stopping me is that I often adjust the bass on the incoming and/or outgoing track, thus nothing having enough hands to control two volume levels and at least one bass EQ knob. So, I stick to mixing with the fader. Works for me. But if volume mixing works for you, then more power to you!

ParticipantI know what you mean. Serato displays the bpms, so I just manually adjust the bpm on each track to match, but if that works for you, that’s cool.

ParticipantHere’s my take on it.
Do not use the visual cues to tell you when to bring another song in. I deliberately look away from the screen when I’m about to drop in the next track. You mix with your ears, not your eyes.
THAT BEING SAID…..
Once the next track is started, I do use the waveform and grid to make sure they are perfectly in sync with each other (no, I do not use the sync button). BUT, not all tracks are going to be beat gridded perfectly, and some EDM tunes have a beat that will “drift” over time. So, you will need to have your ears working all the time to make sure it sounds good. Again, just because it looks matched up on screen does not mean it will actually sound good.
I hope this helps. You will hear a lot from people saying “you have to learn a certain way or you’re not a real DJ.” The truth is, there are a lot of ways to learn that are effective.

Participantso it looks like I’ll need an adapter to go into the 1/8″ audio jack?
Daryl Northrop
ParticipantI’ve been wrestling with this question too. Just moved my library to a new laptop, and itunes jacked everything to hell. Luckily everything transferred over in serato in the same crates/playlists.
Daryl Northrop
ParticipantI started out on a windows laptop. All the specs exceeded what serato and my controller required, but I still had serious stability issues. So, I bit the bullet and went with a macbook pro – no problems at all since! It is more expensive, but the reliability is a must-have.

ParticipantI use Serato, but from what I’ve heard, Traktor is better for remixing on the fly. My $0.02 worth.

ParticipantScrew it. My wife and I are both 41 and we still sometimes go out to the clubs. I’ll be at the 9:30 Club in DC on Oct 18 for the Pendulum dj set if you want to hang out 🙂

ParticipantAlso, if you can’t do a proper sound check ahead of time, use a track that has a mostly instrumental intro of a minute or two, preferably without a heavy kick drum. This is just in case your sound is turned up way too loud, you don’t end up redlining the PA and sounding awful. Make any volume adjustments you need, and then kick into the mix from there.
