Also the settings like keep library organized are factors, when iTunes becomes corrupt for whatever reason, it will “keep files organized” and throw them into the “unknown album” and “unknown artist” because it doesn’t know what to do with them. I’m hardcore on wav as my file format and I’m determined to keep wav as my file of choice. I’m on my third loading of files as the “genius’s” at the genius bar aren’t competent and lost what I had left of my library
So I’m trying not checking “keep Media folder organized” under the advanced tab and checking “copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library” as this option as I understand is info about the file not the whole file. Then under the “general” tab un check “automatically retrieve track names from internet” and uncheck “check for new software automatically”. But that’s just me it’s like owning an egg you know that it won’t be long until it breaks. BOTTOM LINE BE CAREFUL! I’m no expert but want to warn you if you’re using wav let me tell you it isn’t fun loading 1500gb’s of cd’s 700gb’s takes two weeks fulltime. COPY! COPY!!!! GOOD LUCK Let me know about your experience. djrenots

This is one of the reason’s why I don’t use iTunes, or any other program for that matter, to organize my music files.

I take it that MAC OSX can read a NTFS formatted hard drive?

My main concern is maintaining my current music folder structure. I don’t want iTunes to change that. I guess I’ll just hook up a firewire drive to my MBP and manually move them over.

Just set up your iTunes on a home network for both and then go into your MPB’s iTunes and import all the songs on your home network. It took about 4-5 hours for most of my music which easily beats the days it could take to transfer everything on CD’s or a flash drive.

Do I have to use iTunes?

Yes. Plenty of external hard drives.
I’m not really worried about saving playlists or Traktor settings, but I would like to be able to import my music folders.

First time I’ve ever heard anyone complain about .wav sound quality vs mp3.
I think the main reason why Traktor doesn’t record in mp3 format is due to licensing fees.

MBP is different from windows, takes a bit of time to get use to it but Ill never go back to a windows computer.

Any advice on transferring audio files over from PC to MAC?

If I were still using a X1600 mixer and a pair of Kontrol X1s, no. But since I’m using a MC6000, then yes.

Ahhh, virtually the same, just a bit smaller. I can live with that.
Just curious, why does the audio icon have a bar through it?

I don’t do Macs, but even I would say 15″. I used to use a Thinkpad that had a 1024×768 screen. The size was wonderful for carrying, but for display it became a pain. The software is getting bigger and bigger to the point you need a decent size screen.

Maybe down the road we’ll see nice-sized monitors in booths where DJs can hook up their laptops to it.

Deal breaker then. No way I can afford a 15″ Mac Book.

Also to answer another question, Macs aren’t really built for customization. There are a few different things you can do, like expand HDD space and upgrade a processor, but apart from that, theres no real upgrades or modifications you can do internally. I would recommend the 500gb HDD or just upgrade to the i7 (which has 500gb). Otherwise you can buy an external HDD for a lot less.

So an SSD swap isn’t possible?

13″ – Super portable, nice screen res, longer battery
15″ – Kinda portable, larger screen res, long battery
17″ – Not really portable, super large screen res, kinda long battery

I’ve got a 13″ i7 and I use Traktor with 2 decks and 2 sample and it works like a charm. But as others have said above, its kinda cramped with 4 decks fully expanded so if that is a really big issue, I would stick with a 13″.

Cramped as in, the Traktor GUI gets cut off on the side and top or everything is just smaller?

With VDJ I have my own custom made skin that has plenty of room for browser. I really badly want an 15″ just for the extra screen space. If you plan on using 4 decks or even the remix decks in Traktor 2.5 I highly recommend you get a 15″.

15″ MBP is out of my budget. If 13″ is really that much of a problem, Then I’ll guess I’ll just have to get a 15″ PC laptop.

In what way do you think the VCI is better?

And do you think it still makes sense even if I wouldn’t use all the buttons self mapped?

For starters, 8 cue buttons per side as opposed to 4.
Lower profile jog wheels. I have big hands and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost ruind mixes because I inadvertently bumper into them while playing.
And speaking of buttons, more buttons gives you greater flexibility down the line should you decide to start mapping.

    As a MC6000 user, I say get the VCI-400.
In fact, I’d recommend the Ean Golden Edition from DJ Tech Tools.
