    1. For a party about 1 person (who loves music) should i do a lot of mixing? Or should i just play tunes.
You a DJ not a jukebox, show off your DJ skills !

    2. Should i add songs that he may not necessarily heard of, but may like?
Experiment with it, for example throw some Martin Garrix – Animals, and see the reaction and be prepared to chop it short if they throw you with beer bootles (lol jk)

    3. If i get some music that he likes from family, how should i space out his favorites?
Instead just get it from his family, get it directly from him also,

    4. Is it ok to add some new more modern songs into a playlist optimized from the 80’s??
Sure !, although dont just limit yourself from 80’s tunes, throw some 70’s and some 90’s also

If you still young @ 18, thats even greater, be more great if you planning to go to the university, now thats where you should take your first baby step, frat party, spring break party, or heck even do a prom party of your old school, be like a homecoming =p

Thing about it is, dont be shy about it, gets to now folks, meet new people, if you just sitting in the dark corner of your bedroom, well that as far as you can go bedroom dj, but like you said you want to progressed, go out there, make the connection

If you do go to the university/college, be on the look out of the bulletin board, sometimes they posted a DJ Competition that they not heavily advertised, if one of my mate didnt tell me i prolly misssed it lol

Go to the Spring break party, hi five the DJ (of course when hes not busy =p) heck bring him/her a doughnuts, booze or something, be friendly but not too pushy lol

As long they are not “Trademark” “Copyrighted” it shouldnt be a problem, or just take some general dictionary words that associated with the videogames/cartoon

For example like in Super Mario Brothers, you can do like The Mushroom Beatz, or something like that

The safe bet will be if the girl comes asked you to play some hip-hop, you played it then they complained its too hard or whatever, simply asked them to gave you an example which hip hop song that they loved? Then you can judged your next selection based on the example that the girl just told you, sometimes “normal, non-dj” folks definition of hip-hop is different with us DJ’s, lol, they prolly say “Fancy” is a hip hop so ya know lol

Some Trap is usually hard and in your face beats, my suggestion maybe to mix em up with some Twerk, preferably Twerk remix of more commercial Pop tunes, so its more easier in their ears and plus its not hurt to see them girls twerking in front of ya =p (or behind ya? lol)

You still lucky tough, the owner sided with you, most of the time they sided with the crowd lol

These days is really hard to just dive into DJ ing and expecting to have an income from it, to stay true this particular profession is the passion, forget everything else, do it with a passion and income might come it self eventually, maybe tomorrow, next week, 20 years from now who knows?

Im sure there other tons of other DJ’s that struggling with it, for 10 years, 20, 40 years, but they stick with it its because something they love

Most of the 80’s track back in the day, came with the remixes version of its own, usually issued by the DMC or Promo DJ Only sent out to selected DJ’s, pressed in 12 inch vinyl, thus knighted as the 12 inch extended remix or something like that

Today’s, most DJ pool services offered this type of tunes with their own added intro and outros, if you dont feel like making your owns, with already warped tracks

I would invest in Adobe Photoshop, its great program for doing all that works and then some

PS as far as a free program, if you have a windows based PC/laptop, if you lucky they sometimes bundled those with Microsoft Office, along with it its that little program called Microsoft PowerPoint, granted its not for making cover art or album art, but once you get past that, its pretty good for doing that task, and its not that hard to learn

Since you considered getting into producing as well, might as well invest in DJ/Producers studio monitors, imo, i would recommended the Monkey Banana sets, the turbo8, i think its pretty good for both DJing and producing, and its not all that expensive per se

Yeah Chuck, thats why i was wonderin what kind of Mac hes talkin about that worth $3,000 ???

Even a Macbook Air should be sufficient to feed his needs, which the OP stated at the beginner level

I still love their Dragon Edition one and on there, I can get a fully maxed out one: 1TB HDD, 4 128Gb SSD’s, 32Gb of DDR Memory, i5 processor, DVD/CDRW optical drive, 5 USB ports, a Steel Series Siberia Headset, a backpack for carrying it,

1TB HDD –> Just Chuck mentioned eh you dont need that much, there is always an external HD
    4 128Gb SSD’s –> really four of them ??
32Gb of DDR Memory —> dont need this much to run a DJ software, its not adobe photoshop
i5 processor –> now this you may need to upped it maybe to i7
5 USB ports –> 2 is sufficient enough to run a DJ controller, too much !
a Steel Series Siberia Headset —> and why in the world you need this headset ? you need a real DJ headset, not some CS headset
a backpack for carrying it —> you prolly still need to buy another baackpack for your controller, cuz i magined laptop+controller wont fit in this backpack

Seems to me you building more to a gaming rig, remembered it be much safer to focus your laptop for one ultimate purpose
