ParticipantNo there isn’t any release date announced yet. Given their ‘it’s ready when it’s ready’-attitude, I wouldn’t count on any announcement until it’s really finished.
Yes it will be a free update for pro users. Furthermore it seems like they are slowly releasing some features of VDJ 8 to pro users in the form of the 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 updates. Perhaps we’ll have some more incremental updates over the coming months.

ParticipantIt depends on how it’s used. In DnB and Dubstep it can be quite accepted/acceptable to rewind a track you mixed in and start it again at the beginning of the track. This is often used to please the audience and have the benefit of hearing the full build-up of the track.
However, I truly dislike this practice and would certainly discourage it. I’ve already heard which track you are going to drop, don’t make me wait for it while the intro is playing again. The only time it might be acceptable is when you are playing a track you produced yourself and you want people to hear it completely.
Using it as a transition ‘effect’ is possible but needs good timing. It could work if the end of your spinback coincides exactly with the drop of the next song. I don’t think it would work for most house tracks as you really need a distinct drop for it to work.

ParticipantNice to hear you’re going to play at a gig, good luck with that and have fun with it. I’m sure the crowd with enjoy your mixes (I suppose they do know you’re going to be playing DnB right? 😉 )

ParticipantI listened to your mix at work and I really enjoyed it. Of course, I didn’t get to listen to all the little details, but then again most people at a party wouldn’t as well. I think I only caught one minor slip-up somewhere where the beats were a bit off, but other than that solid mixing. Song selection is also pretty nice, I do enjoy the happy DnB tunes and you mixed them nicely with some harder tunes.
Looking forward to a next mix

I would have done that but it’s tough to handle some aggressive guest who don’t want to understand and you’re in middle of the show where you’re also getting request from others.I suppose you could ask them to come back after the show. Then you would have plenty of time to give them the tracklisting. Another thing you could do is give them a link to your facebook page where you can them put the tracklisting when you get home. This also gives them a reason to visit your page and hopefully come and see you at other events.
Also, I’d advise you to try and record the whole set you perform at a party. In this case the lady might be happy to get a CD with your mix of that evening and you have less of a moral dilemma by giving it away for free.

ParticipantI don’t think you did anything wrong. Quite simply, it’s illegal for you to share these songs. Even if they paid you, the original artists wouldn’t get any money and that where the problem lies. Of course it would be quite ok for you to provide a tracklist of the songs you’ve played so they can buy them themselves.
A last alternative would be to charge them as much as it costs to download the songs from itunes or another source and then buy these songs for them and burn them to a CD. I doubt it’s completely legal, but I’d say it’s a reasonable way to make sure the artists get their proper compensation.

ParticipantI’m not sure what you are trying to achieve with this app. What kind of content would it contain? I can’t imagine anything more than a combination of all your facebook/mixcloud/twitter. I don’t think I’d pay for an extra app when I could be getting all this information through the regular channels that I’m already watching. Curious to hear what your plans with the app are 🙂
December 10, 2012 at 3:25 pm in reply to: How many times should you play certain tunes at a party? #33357DJimC
ParticipantNormally I’d say that you should never play a certain song more than once during a night. To avoid having to play a popular song for the second or third wave of party-goers, just don’t play it while the club is still filling up. If you have a large enough collection of songs, you should be able to play enough popular songs during the night without repeating yourself.
However, if it’s a top40 club where you need to handle a lot of request, you might deviate a bit and play a certain very popular song 2 times. Still, try to avoid it and play a different popular song from the same artist.

ParticipantIt depends a bit on the eq settings of your mixer (hardware or software) wether cutting the bass will influence the sound of your vocals. With some mixers the bandwith of the bass eq is very wide and will cut the low from your vocals as well as cutting the bass.
The eq parameters of hardware mixers are often available in the manual. VDJ introduced parametric eq’s in the last release, so you can emulate any set of eq parameters. Not sure about other software packages.
If you want some more tips about using eq’s in your mixes, perhaps it’s easiest to post a link to one of your mixes and tell us where you think you went wrong. Perhaps you could get some pointers from some more experienced DJ’s on these forums.

ParticipantI’m using VDJ Pro 7.3 with windows and an intel core2duo. I do have a slightly high CPU usage (+/- 30%) just playing a track, but I’ve never had any problems as long as I remember to disable all unnecessary services and my wireless connection.

ParticipantIn most countries you have to pay a performance fee everytime you play in front of a crowd. However, this is normally paid by the owner of the club/bar. They often have a deal with organisations like RIAA to pay a yearly flat fee which goes towards the royalties for producers and composers.
As for performing an ‘unauthorised’ remix, I’m not sure what the legal rules are here but as long as it’s not really inappropriate/offending I doubt you’ll ever get into trouble with it. Of course, you cannot sell your remix without prior permission by the producer/composer.
November 28, 2012 at 1:02 pm in reply to: Help needed with a little bit of vdj mapping and a few questions #32753DJimC
ParticipantHey,
I don’t know the answers to all your questions, but I can tell you what I know from using VDJ:
1) Make sure that the channel VU’s (in VDJ) aren’t clipping and also that the master VU (on the controller) isn’t clipping. Clipping on either of these meters results in loss of sound quality.
2) From what I’ve heard the largest complaint about the previous EQ’s was the default eq bands that were used. Since these are now configurable the new parametric EQ should be fine for anyone who doesn’t need a 4 band equaliser.
3) Not quite sure about this one, but it should be something like this:
KEY: FX1_LEFT ACTION : deck left effect 1 slider 1 & deck left effect 2 slider4) I think the set_cue command should work here. As long as you don’t want more than one cue point per track you could simply use set_cue 1 for the cue button. Otherwise you could use set_cue 99 (asuming you use less than 99 regular cue points)
5) I think the quadratic fader gives you more precision in the uppermost regions of the fader and less precision on the lower regions. Not quite sure why this is preferable, but I almost always have my faders either fully on or fully closed.

ParticipantTraktor will most likely work fine with your DDJ-Ergo
I’m wondering though, have you tried some different skins for VirtualDJ? The interface is very customisable and there are quite a lot of very different skins available (I dare say many more than Traktor or Serato).
As for library management, I’m not sure what you are looking for. The custom filter maps are very adjustable to your needs, but it needs a bit of work to configure them. The latest update (7.3) also introduced the ability to search in multiply fields simultaneously.
Still, you should try the traktor demo and see if it fits your style better.

ParticipantFirst question: which software are you using?
I’m using VDJ and I’m quite sure it’s not possible to have more than one beatgrid or a flexible beatgrid during the same song. The only variable you can set is a starting point and the spacing between the beats.

ParticipantIf you’re using CDJ’s and a mixer, you would need to use a cable from your mixer into your mic in of your laptop. Hopefully your mixer has got two outputs so you can send the audio to both the laptop (for recording) and your amp/speakers.
I suppose it you could also use your amp if it has a spare output where you don’t have any speakers plugged in, just make sure you send a mono signal then.
