Season 2 was much better IMO. They were more about DJing with better judges and Just Blaze was a much better host. The big thing that killed me about this season was that it was more about how well can you put together a predetermined set. Not once were they challenged with having to react to the crowd. Being able to read the crowd is the number one skill a DJ can have. Also, because the sets were so short, unless you were a scratching, hot mix style DJ, you didn’t stand a chance. Also the fact that everything was based on turntables even though in the application, they said there would be CDJs on the show. Kid Capri is a dinosaur and is amazed by even the simplest controllerism, Mia Moretti didn’t seem credible at all and Ben Madahii seemed to be the most reasonable but didn’t carry much clout to me because he was an A&R guy, not a DJ. On top of all of that, Kid Capri’s set was just all of his sets…simply awful. Flat out, he is not a good DJ IMHO…

Hopefully they will bring Just Blaze back and get it right next time.

I like to use Average White Band “Cut The Cake” to get everyone’s attention and give the bride & groom and photographer a chance to get to the cake and take pictures. Then I use The Beatles “When I’m 64” for the actual cake cutting. I talk the bride and groom through cutting the cake…usually have the groom make the first cut and have the bride make the second cut and pull the cake out then make a joke about how guys can never get the first piece of cake out right…

As Phil as pointed out in a previous article, you really should decide on what software package you want before trying to decide on a specific controller. The controller runs the software…if you don’t like the software, the best controller in the world is going to be awful to play on.

I never plan any sets (except if I am making a CD that I will make hundreds of copies of or a competition). My library is to big for that. What I have done is I have organized my go to music into playlist. The playlist are sorted into categories of genre (Mainstream, Urban, Dance etc). Each one off those genres is broken down into BPM ranges. This way I can jump around between genres and BPMs and find most stuff pretty easily…

So I show up…pick something that matches the mood and start playing and see what happens.

It depends on the gig and the situation. For weddings, its different than for clubs. It would be different if it were an mainstream club or a genre specific club. This is where the experience part of DJing comes in at.

For social events with a meal like weddings. I may either do something interactive like a line dance to get people up. Maybe play a classic slow song and announce the dance floor is open and then play a fast song.

For a multi-genre nightclub, I will usually stop the music and make some sort of house announcement, drink special and/or welcome if its early in the night, and then switch the genre from what I was playing to an anthem of a new genre and that usually works well.

For a genre specific club, its more subtle. I will usually open with a lot of older but recognizable tracks and then slowly start to bring in newer tracks that pull people out on the dance floor.

A couple of options I would look into.

How about a Allen & Heath Xone K2. You could map 2 faders to pitch and 2 faders to volume. It has mains out and headphone out, so you are golden

There’s the ZOMO MC-1000 and the Denon SC2000 although both of with you will need an external mixer and the SC2000 doesn’t have a sound card.

Also if you are not in a rush, the new Behringer CMD series looks promising but you will need a sound card with those as well.

If Jogs are a must, then you are down to the Denon SC2000 & the Behringer CMD….You can also look at the Xone 2D

For a small mixer, you can look into the IRig Mixer

I had a very similar experience this weekend. I was DJing a wedding and the venue had built in sound and lights. Great. So I get there and see whats being used and how. Well the wedding was interesting (for other reason besides equipment) but the lady who runs the place is interested in maybe bringing me in as the house DJ. So she said she would give me a call this week as I was leaving. I told her it sounds great and that I saw a few things that can be tweaked or need upgrading and that I would tell her about it when we meet up.

So I think the plan of you meeting with the manager and just mentioning things would be good. Also don’t give him the tone that everything has to be replaced at once…the price of doing that may send him into shell shock. Maybe do it triage style…worst thing first.
