ParticipantI usually hand them out while I’m playing to the crowd that’s come up to the booth.
Keep a few in your bag for post-set socializing. Give them to pretty girls, networking connections, etc.

ParticipantThanks Terry for the vote of confidence…
Branden, read the series on how to succeed at DJing for starters. Here’s part 1:
NOW…the good news is you’re WILLING to play Top-40 and EDM. Too many (like myself) would rather play the more underground scene, which is even harder to break into.
My suggestion is to start small. Look at bars. The kinds of spots college students and 20somethings go to. In many of those venues, promoters/owners aren’t looking for DJs who “bring heads”, but more those who put the crowd ahead of themselves. That means if a pack of hot women want Miley and Bieber, you play it. That means you’re not going to drop some hard-edged dubstep and be fist-pumping while half the crowd walks out the door.
Start there, and build on it. Don’t just play, but interact. Give out CDs or something…build a following there. You show competence, meaning a mainstream promoter can count on you, then you’ll move up the ladder.

ParticipantI think if I was in your scenario, I’d feel out people through the Internet and see if there are others in N Idaho who would be into a scene.
I’ve noticed that rural areas seem more ripe for raves as opposed to clubs. You might want to consider that route or at least find a promoter in N Idaho you can connect with and help throw events.

ParticipantWe got you covered. 😉

ParticipantIt sounds like you want a more mainstream kind of appeal…which is fine.
My suggestion would be to invoke the Vegas vibe. With that in mind though, you’ll need to turn up the elegance ideology. That means pushing for proper attire and getting bottle service happening.
Another approach would be more hipster. Play a good mix of tunes, dive into the more “indie” sounds, and keep things laid back and fun…relaxed as well.
It sounds like your current scene is more “dive bar”, “country bar”, or “road house” in terms of vibe. Am I correct?

ParticipantReally cool album cover and title, based around GnR album, naissss!
I had no clue what to call them, and then that popped into my head. I do wonder if it’ll help make it more eye-catching to web surfers.
I’m awaiting a GnR fan to give me crap. 😛

ParticipantWell…unless you want to get out there and really push for votes, then yes.
Phil wrote a nice piece about winning the contest: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2014/03/7-secrets-winning-burn-residency/
I also did one a while back on contests in general: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/10/how-to-win-dj-competitions-contests/

ParticipantWell, then I guess my goals were achieved. Like I said, I made I to be more like an “opening set” while II is more “uptempo prime time”.
Thanks for checking them out. 🙂

ParticipantExcellent!
I mainly reserve my anti-SoundCloud view when it’s DJs who complain about their mixes being deleted, but they won’t upload on other sites.
Alex Moschopoulos
ParticipantNot sure. I do know things are all USB now. Midi In/Out in my book is when you’re trying to get away from software and be more “live musician” with drum machines and keyboards.

ParticipantI’d tell anyone who is playing trap or wants to play trap to have fun with it. Play the EDM and Hip-Hop styled trap sounds, but intermix it with actual Hip-Hop…provided you don’t get some douche of a manager/promoter demanding you to not “blacken” the sound.
Bring in some Hip-Hop sensibilities, scratching, tricking…I’ll bet you go places.

ParticipantI live in N. Idaho, in a county of about 9000 people, we don’t even have a stoplight, so any “scene” is going to have to be at least partly my doing. I am working on it and working to get my foot in the door at a few local bars, and also looking into other ways to help get things going… Keep shining folks, Moonshadow
What kind of scene would you like to build?
Forget any difficulties or obstacles…in an ideal world, what kind of a scene would you want for your area?
Alex Moschopoulos
ParticipantYou should use MixCloud or MixCrate. Unlike SoundCloud they don’t give DJs any hassle.

ParticipantThank you. II is more the “jackin” sound that I love. I wanted I to be more like an opening set.
Loads of great jackin’ house on Traxsource.

ParticipantHad a type-o…the second mix is “II”, not “I”
