ParticipantI wrote some articles on this.
Start here to get an idea of where it all comes from:
In my book, it’s impossible to be on top of everything. Just shop, listen when you can, and pay attention to resources that fit your style and work. So if you’re playing mainstream music, then check in the charts on your local Top-40 station.

ParticipantGenres are meaningless. Quality control is everything. Develop your critical listening skills over years and decades. Don’t support the industry’s need for continual sub-division. Unity is all. Good luck!

ParticipantI feel you…but this is life.
If “b—h” can bring out 100-500 people, then he/she can be a prima donna. HOWEVER, too many missed shows will dwindle that fan base…especially if they don’t agree with their ego.
This is why I love Midi. I don’t need anything but an open channel on the mixer or amp. Busted turntables or CDJs? Who cares. Sub-par budget crappy gear? Who cares. I felt liberated when I liberated myself from the house equipment.

Participant“Good DJs adapt; bad Djs gripe.”
I ended up putting that on my Facebook Page.
I can understand some angst the older DJs can have for the Pauly D’s, Paris Hiltons, and what not…but the rest is more in my book older guys now seeing their 15min of fame dying, and thus they’re mad.
I remember the times when it became super-difficult to land a gig, when I noticed in the club/rave realm the only value you had was in “how many heads you bring out”. I usually tell disgruntled DJs to take a step back, or retire to a hobbyist level. Many will then grumble how it’s not fun without a receptive crowd, but I’ll respond then how it seems they care more about the rush or attention over the music…and thus should just play pop music in trendy spots. Blah blah blah.
I used to be negative…but mainly at the politics of the scene. I tried very very hard to not bring said hate on other DJs…especially mainstream music ones. When I stepped back into a hobbyist logic again, I fell in love with DJing like I reunited with an old girlfriend…even if all I’m doing is posting mixes online.
I should find podcasts seeking guest DJs.

ParticipantA related question – what about remixes that have namedrops in them? That feels a little lame to play to me, but some of them are really good remixes. Is it even lamer to edit the drops out?
I think it depends on the remix. If it’s some subtle thing like Rhythm Masters sliding it in, I leave it. When it’s some blatant thing by some amateur with a good remix, I don’t even play it.

ParticipantI agree with Vintage. Getting a raw voice recording is quite inexpensive. From there, dress it up on your own.

I personally think they’re fine on uploaded mixes, online show mixes, radio mixes, anything that isn’t a live setting. When it’s a club, bar, fest, or rave…it just seems cheesy/inappropriate. Somewhat narcissistic.
That’s just my opinion though.

ParticipantI work as a web designer/developer for a large ad agency here in Chicago. It’s where I learned a lot about branding and marketing that I try to instill in you all. 🙂
I’ve made logos, but unfortunately am a bit busy in work and some side consulting to help you out beyond some advice.

ParticipantWell, go to a site like DaFont and try your name in the fonts. Get ideas…because you can see how many logos aren’t much more than a tweaked font.

That or spend a little money on 99 Designs and get loads of ideas.

ParticipantHere’s some logos then for inspiration

Is your DJ name “Olly”?
