I have some trance for this week:

    Title: Dropshot (Sam Jones Remix)
    Artist: Mark Leanings
    Label: Kearnage Recordings

If you hate trance, well…no one’s perfect. However, if you like trance then this should be in your repertoire. It’s just a bouncy, energetic ride of changing textures from start to finish. The synths pack a punch, while the variation of trance to breaks rhythms just work so well. Just a nice pounder to drop and make the crowd jump.

    Here’s some help:

    1) Creating a logo for the name on the night – Is there anywhere I can design this myself or get it done for cheap?

    2) Same with a poster / flyers…

    3) Reaching out to the local audience and increasing exposure – i.e. difference Ways of promoting other then social media (fb, twitter, forums), and handing out / putting up flyers and posters locally

    5) Negotiating with the club owners about a potential cut in the bar sales?

Ok, here’s another one for you…

Title: Sunshine ’89 or Walking on Sunshine ’89
    Artist: Fax Yourself
Label: Sound of Belgium / BCM

    Genre(s): Acid House
    Year Released: 1989

Fax Yourself was a Belgian euro house and new beat project made up of members Fabian Van Messen, Jack Mauer, and Marc Neuttiens. You might not know those names, but old schoolers keeping up with the European sound might also recognize projects such as Bassline Boys or Defcon. Regardless, it’s one of those cases of the tune outliving the band. Fax Yourself also did a nice acid house rendition of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love with singer Carrie Ann.

The funny story with the Fax Yourself version of Walking on Sunshine was in how it was the first time I ever heard the song, not knowing they were using an accapella from Arthur Baker’s studio project Rockers Revenge.

NOW…the interesting twist was when I caught that video a year ago. For the longest time I thought Walking on Sunshine was a Rockers Revenge tune, not knowing it was originally composed by Reggae and Soca artist Eddy Grant (you know, the guy who did Electric Avenue).

It’s always funny how many anthems are more or less remakes or covers.

Gerd, it always amazes me how much the sound was predominantly Black up until after the breakdancing pop trend passed and rap/R&B evovled…then it went all Latin as Freestyle.

Love Planet Patrol…been a fave since my childhood. 🙂

MY first pick to post is an anthem for b-boys around the world, and a shining example of how 70s funk easily merged its way into hip-hop in the 80s:

    Title: It’s Just Begun
    Artist: Jimmy Castor Bunch
    Label: RCA Records

    Genre(s): Funk
    Year Released: 1972

I think most of America really encountered It’s Just Begun in that now famous scene from the movie Flashdance, despite that the tune was originally released eleven years prior. I wouldn’t be surprised if It’s Just Begun saw some love at famous venues like The Loft or even Paradise Garage back in the day.

Regardless of the late interest, Jimmy Castor Bunch did see much success in the 70s with their album, climbing the Billboard charts when it was released. Take away the b-boy aspect of this tune, and you’ll hear that transition Black music took from the Motown and James Brown thinking of the 60s into the 70s ideologies of Sly and the Family Stone or Parliment Funkadelic.

You just can’t help but be intoxicated by this tune. The fast pace, the bass, saxophone, and vocals just make your feet bounce.

I wonder how long it will take before you get into trouble using Armin’s show and radio show name though …

Agreed. I’d definitely come up with a new name.

If anything, start a podcast with said name.

Took a listen, wasn’t into the calmer kinds of trance, but that’s only a question of taste.

What I did like: The gradual buildup of energy over the course of the whole mix. Good quality to have if you want to be an opening DJ. Also liked the flashback of dropping in Three Drives.

What I didn’t like: In your efforts to not let things drag out, you did a blend on top of vocals and other important melodies. Sometimes it’s better to play them out, then perhaps cut them shorter in post-production. It’s what I’ll do if I think a part is dragging too long.

REGARDLESS…you did a nice job. Go make the longer mix you want to.

I have to give props this week to Kristian Nairn, who happens to play Hodor in Game of Thrones. Did not know he is a DJ and producer.

    Title: Up (Club Mix)
Artist: Kristian Nairn featuring Leanne Robinson
    Label: Radikal

Usually when we hear of TV/Film celebrities making dance music, thoughts go to cheesy manufactured crap that seems to show said celebrity really didn’t try to be innovative. Nairn went the opposite, with a fun, light-hearted, but solid piece of vocal piano house.

    Definitely check it out.

I have an awesome one that I just came across today. Had me bouncing at my desk.

Title: All This Before (Endor Remix)
    Artist: Bordertown
    Label: Love & Other

I was doing my usual duty of checking out the My Beatport section, when this little gem came upon my ears. It’s just got such a nice 90s deep house funk, and those pianos…delectable.

d-M and this Thump article put me in the mood for trance’s heyday.

Beyond the anthems many know, I’d say this one ranks at the top of my list of favorites:

    Title: Madagascar (Ferry Corsten Remix)
    Artist: Art of Trance
    Label: Platypus

    Year released:
    Genre: Trance

Art of Trance is also known as producer Simon Berry, cofounder of Platypus Records. Berry had been producing since the early 90s under several names including Art of Trance, but remained relatively out of the spotlight until his 1999 single Madagascar was remixed by Ferry Corsten. it bluew up all over the world, getting much play by the then exploding trance headlining DJs we know of all too well.

For me, I just remember hearing Madagascar in a large space club, and was taken for a ride. I didn’t do drugs, but the tune gave me a literal high with it’s soaring synths and strong build-up. I had picked up the vinyl and played it to death. I still get shivers when I hear it.

    Here’s mine for this week:

Title: Deputy of Love (Stoon & Bennie Goes to L.a. Mix)
Artists: John Stoongard and Gianni Bini
    Label: Ocean Trax
    Genre(s): House, Funky

It’s just the right balance of funky with energy for the summer. Plus those powerful vocals just send.
