ParticipantIt’s cloudy and dreary outside, so I’m posting trance this week…

Title: Prime Example
Artist: Bryan Kearney & Will Rees
Label: Kearnage RecordingsAs much as I love trance, I usually veer away from the very cheesy or overly-poppy sounds. Lately, I’m seeing more tunes made with a bit of techno in the influence, and Prime Example is one of them. The vocal samples and the slowly building energy just makes this a prime time banger or even one ideal for the late-night set. It just kicks up and stays relentless.

ParticipantNice tune. Sounds like yet another great tune I’d never hear in a club or lounge…but I’d hear it in a clothing store or hair salon.
Kind of sucks you hear better music many times in stores. 😉

ParticipantHere’s my first for this week…
Title: Been A Long Time
Artist: The Fog
Label: ColumbiaGenre(s): House
Year Released: 1993This was one of those anthems that signaled the big change from the years of rave and hardcore dominating the clubs into a new era of house. For me it was just in how smooth this tune plays, and that “rolling beat” that carried me. Most DJs were more into the Rio’s Pride Mix, which featured the new (at the time) dabbling into Brazilian rhythms and the Strictly Rhythm style synths many copied…but the original was always my favorite.

ParticipantI think a good set is about building energy in peaks and valleys, taking the listener on a journey, and having variety where it’s not a hour of one sound, but not jumping all over the place either.
When I say peaks and valleys, I mean over the whole set…not just over the course of a song.
When I speak of variety, for me, it’s about staying around a set of genres that are similar, like the many flavors of deep house or the many flavors of trance…but you’re not playing a set of songs that sound exactly alike. You break up monotony with vocals, classics, interesting tunes, etc.

ParticipantHere’s one that caught my ears today:
Title: Second Story
Artist: Mark Knight
Label: SuaraFor those who might have heard Johnick’s Play the World, or The Player by First Choice, that rift will sound very familiar. However, I have a soft spot for those tunes, and Mark Knight’s uptempo idea on it made me groove to this tune enough that I had to pick it up.

ParticipantThis one popped up earlier this week and I kept it in my mind for today:
Title: Let’s Start The Dance
Artist: Hamilton Bohannon
Label: MercuryGenre(s): Disco, Funk, Soul
Year Released: 1978I always saw this tune as one of the more overlooked disco tunes out there. Most normal people who perhaps dance to disco at a bar or wedding usually know of the typical Bee Gees and Chic, but I’ve always seen Hamilton Bohannon as one for the true aficionados and DJs. In all honesty, this has to be my most favorite piece of disco out there, and I’ll still jam to it to this day. Bohannon’s sound made me think of the true smooth 70s pimp-daddy sound.

ParticipantEasy answer.
1. Log on to Beatport, Traxsource, iTunes, Amazon Music, or wherever you see a song is for purchase.
2. Purchase the tracks legally.
3. Smile and play.
