I've been djing for several years now, but always as a way to make extra $$, never fully focused on improving my skills. Over time I've realized that my strength is my music, and my challenge is to put the songs together in the "right" way. In other words, I am a selector, playing songs in their entirety (mostly) and smoothly transitioning to the next song. No effects, no scratching, just selecting and playing, with the occasional beat mix and loop here and there. I have managed to dj weddings and clubs this way, with some success, but mostly I enjoy playing music as a background, mood shaping, atmosphere engineer. I tend to favor less mainstream music, lean heavily on soul, funk and reggae mixed with just enough hip hop, jazz, latin, afro, broken-beat, mashups and remixes to keep things eclectic but familiar. Ive been djing long enough to be a lot more (technically) skillful than I am, which also means Ive been doing it long enough to know what my strengths are and where my skills are most appreciated. I am well suited and most comfortable playing cocktail hours and martini lounges.
