    Such embarrasing situation i had in the early ’80’s when i was playing in a Club (was mixing with vinyl).
    I was making an very good transition in my set, in time with perfect alined beats.
    Was very enthousiasic swinging on the vibe in the Dj booth and i accidently bumped one of the 2 turntables.
    Result; my transition was trainwrecked and also the vinyl that was playing out on that turntable ,
    had a big scratch on its surface. So it was not suiteble to play out anymore. Me and the other members of the Dj team & the audience could have a big laugh about that.

    When you have gigs where you have to bring all your own equipement with you. (mobile disco)
    Be prepared for the worst…….

    One time on such mobile disco gig (with a Dj Team) our DIY build mainamplifier was not functioning anymore, in the middle of this gig. Al the sound was stopped. A very stressfull & embarrasing situation, but we had brought a spare amplifier with us, so we could solve this in a few minutes. This situation occured also a long time after that on a other gig. This was caused by the lightorgan wired to one channel of the speaker output of our amplifier. We learned from that event, and made some adjustments on our DIY build lichtorgan to build an little amplifier in it, so the sound output runs from the rec output of the analog mixer.

    So be prepared for almost everything, take all kinds of audiocables, a flashlight, and some small handtools, ducktape etc. with you.

    🙂 Thank you, Hee Won Jung,
    For your valueble tips about this subject. As i understand; the way you calbrate your tracks
    “just hitting the 3rd orange on my VU meter, then i bring it down just a touch.”

    Is almost the same way i do that, but with the help of an software (old fashioned) V.U meter to measure the sound output, just hitting -3 Db. For me thats the perfect setting, so i do have “headroom” for my transitions & effects.
    Without have the risk for clipping or distortion of the sound. Because digital sound is very sensitive for that.

    Before i’m going to mix i calibrate all the tracks to the desired gain level. (VDJ remembers all the gainsettings for the individual tracks, i want to use for my mix.

    I,ve found out that -6 Db is about 50% procent of original sound @ 0 Db. (0 Db stands for the loudest volume level without clipping. When mixing, i always use a Technics RP DH 1200 Dj headphones. (PPL left & output left)
    (i can’t use a monitorbox, because i don’t wanna disturb my neighbours in my apartment, with my sounds)

    When mixing in i have the Bass @ the 2nd track @ 9 o’çlock, on the right moment i switch the Bass lines and crossfader it very slowly toward the 2nd track. I record my mixes always in a wavefile. When the mix is recorded i manually make some minor adjustments in in the dynamics & trim the ends. So the overall volume levels in the mix is a but uniform.Than i load the mix file in Abelon Live, so i can add a little extra volume on the entire mix with a limiter. (very subtile) When all the work is done, i transfer the Wavefile into an 320 Kbps Mp3 file.

    Within Traktor Set the Headroom to 0db and your master volume to -10Db.
    This is the base starting line for your tracks.
    From there its using your ear and listening to your mix before you bring it in.

    This is probably one of the biggest mistakes that Controller DJs make…they think that the software can do everything for them…and it does…but not very well.

    Do you know how this works on Virtual DJ? In VDJ you have the setting “remember” for the individual gain settings of the tracks. What are the ideal Db settings to adjust the tracks before you going to mix with them?

    I advise you to shutoff the autogain (limiter), adjust all your tracks @ -3 Db, before you going to mix them.
    When you have recorded your mix in a Wave file, than you can add a little extra volume on the entire mix with a limiter. (be careful to not limit too much)
