MemberThank you I really appreciate the feedback. I was really having trouble on which one I wanted but the TM4 sounds like the better route.

MemberDefinitely do it. I’ve done events with my (in college) and it got me tons of publicity. I received another DJ offer right after it. Follow the advice that these other guys have given you and you will be golden. I’ll also throw in there, to see if you could work out a little bit of payment since you will be extremely less expensive than if they were to hire a DJ.

However it is not easy to hit the big clubs that pay well from the bat. So income might be short, but of course you should get payed. Never sell yourself to cheap or you will never get to the real paychecks…
Also to consider if you want this to be your College jog: I earn triple to four times the money playing a single wedding than what I get from a night in a club that is only mediocre or has a bad day and is low on patrons drinking much…I’ll actually consider doing some wedding in the future. Maybe when I gain more connections and have a bigger more suitable set up. Right now my set up is very light, focused more towards house parties, but I’m trying to start and get paid so that I can expand and eventually throw my own parties and what not,. So eventually I’ll have capital to reinvest back into DJing.

I’m a rising senior at Wash U, and have been djing for about a year so far. First, is that actually your DJ name? Because (dear lord) that is a heck of a mouthful that won’t catch on at all. Secondly (out of curiosity), why are there bboys on your picture if you are play more EDM than hip hop, funk, and breaks?
Back onto the questions: start out with house parties/dorm parties/school group afterparties, playing for free. If people think you are any good, they’ll start telling their friends, and you may be able to start djing at paid afterparties and formals. Depending on how people react to your mixing, you will have a balance of paid and unpaid events to play at a few times a month. At this point, you need to market like crazy and hustle hard. I probably get paid for a third to half of the events at which I play, but the unpaid ones are some of my favorites!
Firstly its funny you mention the name situation because I friend of mine just told me the exact same thing. I’ve actually changed my twitter/FB pages to IshyBoy as to be a bit shorter and a little more mature (some people get tired of the whole Swag thing). Second I’ve actually been a hip hop dancer for 3 years now. I’m much more into DJing now, I dance mainly at parties instead of actually performing.
I definitely don’t expect to get paid for at least a little while. Right now I’m trying hard to have some businesses allow me to spin a set at their place and I’m trying to throw a hall-wide party/mixer once I get on campus. I’ll definitely remember to keep that balance and not get too over zealous and think I’m too good to do an unpaid gig at least at this stage. I appreciate your advice man thank you.

What is your dream? Your hopeful big goal?
a) Getting paid thousands to play weddings, you have your own business, you even have other DJs working for you and thus you handle multiple events at a time.
b) You’re playing the local bars and clubs, pumping the top charting tunes, women think you’re hot, fellas buy you shots, but you sometimes get criticism from music snobs, or are called a “sellout”. However, you make a steady paycheck from it all.
c) You’re going to raves and events all over to play offbeat music. You don’t make much money at all, but you get invited to play at bigger festivals, open for big names, and your mixes online get loads of downloads.
MY POINT: You can’t have it all. You can do A & B, or somehow pull off B & C. If your end goal really is to have some fun, play some stuff, but eventually whittle it down to a hobby and go into a normal career, then I’d dabble on B & C. Choice A in my eyes is what you do when you want to make a lucrative living in DJing. If you want that Choice A though, then consider studying business.
In college, I’d tell you things are not much different from the rest of DJing, but you might find you will have less competition in a small college town. If you’re simply happy playing the mainstream then make a demo, hang out in the local bars or even club that has DJs, network with the DJs, and eventually work your way in.
If you feel entrepreneurial, then take a stab at promoting. Perhaps take on a quieter evening at a local bar and look for a way to pack it.
If mainstream isn’t your thing, then perhaps look into a weeknight at one of those spots if you can find social circles that would want this as well. That or find like-minded folk and throw raves.
I definitely understand what you’re saying. I do love doing this and I think it’s definitely something I’ll take with me even in my steady career after college. I actually am studying business right now and I’ve been gathering other DJs around my level that will be going to my school this fall. Hopefully having a collaboration of DJs will make things a bit easier to take off. I really love anything EDM which is why I stick to electro remixes of more mainstream songs. I really appreciate your feedback it actually made me think a lot. Choice B is really what I want to focus on. I’m dedicating to expanding my city’s entertainment scene and specifically I want to make EDM more prevalent in the everyday club scene here in Cincinnati. Once again thank you greatly for your words of wisdom they really do help.

Mobile? Bar? Club? Rave?
Do you want to play mainstream music or underground music?
Well my style of choice is EDM, but I’ve been playing mainly Electro-Pop remixes. So mostly mainstream.
