Count another tally for cook, I love to cook. I also, play some video games occasionally but might be selling my system to support my music habit – other than that, playing the guitar is a passion of mine that is up there with Djing – in fact when I get stressed out by a mix I play guitar for a bit to cool me down.

I agree that purchasing CDJs just to look the part makes no sense, though I considered getting the DDJ T1 at one point to help familiarize myself with the CDJ style. But I realized the learning curve can’t be THAT bad. If I ever get lucky enough to land a residency where the big wigs look down on controllers, I’m sure I’d have no issues switching to CDJs for club gigs.

Yeah, I think one of the 10 commandments is learn to use CDJs and/or Vinyl which I already do anyway at least the basics – Back in the Philippines I had DJ friends and I used to stand in for them from time to time both on Vinyl and CDJs so I understand how they work – not a fan of CDJs though… they seem crazy expensive for the lesser of both worlds – thats just my opinion though.

Go for it! Playing live is the best practice and is loads of fun, you’ll wanna throw up but it’ll be great. If you’ve got a basic playlist going thats a great start – all you have to do is practice your mixes, make sure your tracks are properly beatgridded and set up your cue points. As for the sound, I would ask if it’s possible to test the PA system… that way you can check the mixing board, see what kind of connection you’re gonna need (more than likely it’ll be a cable that you would also use to connect your iPhone on one end and a 1/4″ on the other end) and see how it sounds… and be prepared. You can run just from your laptops soundcard if you practice enough to the point that you don’t need headphones. If you do get a soundcard like and Audio 2 DJ that would be ideal but not necessary for a show like this.

    Good luck!

Yeah, that’s my entire set up for gigs and for home – Like I said, it does everything I need it to and I don’t really want to buy some turntables and/or cdjs just so promoters/owners will think highly of me. Plus I kinda love the ability to move and jump up and down with my controllers! I have shown up at gigs though where the promoter asked if these were toys and touched them cause he thought they weren’t actually doing anything! But for the most part nobody minds – once I get started and the music starts going and the crowd starts moving they stop caring.

I’m originally from La Union, then moved to Baguio for a long time, then Manila for a couple of years. Never got to go to Cebu, but know that’s a great place – a lot of friends of mine lived there or went for vacation. closest I got was Boracay!

Yeah, when I lived in Manila, I remember it being largely hip / hop and commercial music – with the occasional techno nights or house nights here and there – this was when E was getting pretty huge with the kids, so I don’t know if it persevered past that or not.

Here’s me… I honestly still dream of owning an s4, x1 etc. but I think I’m home, this set up is all I think I will need for a long time. What’s not in the pic is a stanton str8-60 – but I don’t use that for DJing, only for listening to records at home – I’m a huge Jazz snob and Vinyl is the only way to go for home listening for me.

Mindfloat, post: 741 wrote: is it really the essence of blending a mix that you cant hear any transitions? sometimes its cool, sometimes its really boring..depends on the situation, but personally i think sometimes its even cooler to get rougher transitions,so that the people recognize “ah,a new beat coming in” if you want perfect seamless transitions all you have to do is using ableton for djing..

Yeah I love when I’m getting the crowd pumped up and a break is building to let it just echo freeze away at the very end as they get antsy for a drop and just have a different tracks drop cued up and just SLAM it on the 1. Not “mixing” per se but loads of fun.

But regarding your ableton comment: I’ve seen djs using ableton on the fly in clip view that make mistakes, whos transitions arent perfect, but ableton is pretty good dj software once you get the hang of it and I think that it is just hugely misunderstood. Not a fan of it for my style of djing but I still think it’s not as “skill-less” as some people think it is.

Agree with Illinoize, youtube was a big help when I was looking at the basics, and listening to other dj mixes that you like, find out the track listing and, if you can, mix those same songs together too for practice – this helped me when I was focusing on “mixing” techniques as the track selection obviously already works. and check out some other blogs too – DJTT might be a bit technical but they have some great articles on there that really inspire me.

Nice – From the Philippines myself… but I’m from Baguio…. How’s the DJ scene in the PI? I remember when I was back there living in Manila, it was a lot of hip hop and occasionally some house/techno music.
