Well, if it’s traktor pro there should be an internal recorder and you can just hit record and make your mix. – I would make at least three for varying times: slow medium and a little bouncier – like you said it’s not gonna be crazy but still people might wanna move a little bit!

I would definitely say have fun – watch the crowd, react to them and it’s a wedding so be ready for requests. If anything use them to gain an understanding of what the general crowd wants.

You know what’s kind of funny… the infighting is universal to any passion pursuit and from the larger picture (Is DJing a skill compared to musical composition?) down to the inane little things (you need to be able to scratch to be a dj). When I played guitar people would say “oh you’re not playing like a real player since you can’t read sheet music” or if you add synth “oh that’s not real rock n’ roll” specifically I would get chewed out over having a $400 dollar guitar because “it’s not a real players instrument” – this one came from Les Paul owners.

When I moved to DJing I thought “oh there can’t be much infighting here right?” wrong! then everyone gets into vinyl vs digital / cdj vs digital etc. ableton vs traktor or serato / DVS vs controllers. I think whatever you choose to do you have to accept that there will be older people and/or traditionalists that are gonna take a disdain to newcomers and new technologies and the people that choose to carve a new path using these new tools in ways not yet imagined.

I have a buddy that djs with one of those – I think it’s just an image thing. A lot of DJs will look at you weird with a keyboard as your main controller, but if you don’t mind that I think that it’s a great controller.

I use a midifighter pro, and also a launchpad. The midifighter I use for controlling effects in traktor (love love love the supercombos!) and also cue point juggling – I love the arcade buttons. Probably something about being an old arcade geek. The launchpad I whole heartedly recommend; for the price it’s amazing – I used it for a bit in ableton but I’ve also mapped it to use in traktor to control effects, cuepoints, everything really – it’s my super minimal set up, traktor+launchpad.

Drug dealers – I always get people asking me if I sell drugs too… That might just be the way I look though… hahaha.

Nice to see what other peoples thoughts are on this topic! 🙂 I tend to find that if I do know the crowd is on E in particular they usually like pretty bass heavy stuff to ‘feel’ the music. Now, in my head, there is a definite correlation between EDM and drugs only because in the Philippines when a bunch of my friends were getting into EDM it was mostly because they were taking copious amounts of E and liked the way the two went together; had they never taken E who knows how long it would have been before I got into EDM.

Nice mix man – good track selection. My constructive criticism would be that in a couple of your transitions, particularly the first (Everyday to set me on fire), there’s a lot going on there between the old track and the incoming track and the sounds kind of clash because everything is going full blast all at once maybe a little EQing might help – unless of course that sound was what you were going for. But like I said overall good mix.

Hey dagstar I listened to one of the mixes will let you know when I have time to listen to the other one.

Bass in ya Face – first, this mix seems really quiet – like the actual file itself not sure what that is about. overall I liked the mix there were a couple of transitions that I felt like the timing was off but not too noticeable. I’ll leave comments on soundcloud as I don’t know the tracklisting off the top of my head.

Being one of ‘those’ people before, I want to elaborate on my thought process: So when you’re a musician (in the traditional sense) you obviously practice an obscene amount before you even consider yourself ‘ok’. Now add into that, that you are trying to create all new sounds out of an instrument that has countless ‘masters’ and the creative roadblocks you have to overcome to just create a riff and or a melody that is all your own – you can kind of see how if you have NO knowledge of what a DJ does and/or still see DJs as a person that simply plays one record after the next you will not be able to appreciate the intricacies of this art form (DJing). Sometimes I’ve seen musicians get downright angry when a bar has a DJ and he is killing it because they assume that he is just putting one track on after the other and they don’t see the creative process behind this.

Being a musician, when I talk to these kind of people I usually just talk a little music theory or drop some hardcore, old school, indie rock trivia knowledge on them and they ‘accept’ me. That is – during a gig. If I’m just talking to someone that has this idea in their head and we have time to get into it – I’ll explain the ‘craft’ after which they usually gain a deeper respect if you can explain the art that is involved in djing… Or show them the djay app and have them make a good mix if they think it’s so easy! 😉

I know! I’ve had that happen and literally my ears were pricked to the speakers and my eyes were glued to the screen waiting!!!! I hate it!

I personally can’t stand itunes – I avoid dealing with it at all costs, hard when you consider I have a Macbook, an iPhone and several iPods. I scan through blogs for new music – download and quality check – sometimes the sound quality from blogs is suspect. If I’m buying my routine is scan beatport and create an order – sleep overnight and replay the list. Choose the ones I like and check amazon.com for them (usually they are cheaper than beatport), if not on amazon then I buy from beatport. The one reason I like digital is I don’t have to buy a mediocre album for a great song. I still listen to certain artists full albums but that’s for pleasure not business.

One time at a hip hop event, I DJ’ed the songs for some local hip hop artists – this lasted a while and after they were done they had a different DJ come up to play the last two hours. Now he had roadcases, a full serato setup – plugged in to the mixer and I was telling him that the mixing board is touchy… to which he says, “Do I look like an amateur?”. I thought alright true enough… anyway through his set he kept pushing into the red and clipping the speakers but acted like nothing was wrong! I went up and told him (on the way off chance that he didn’t hear it) but he ignored me. Eventually the bar owner went up and turned down the master volume. Other than that he was playing a hip hop set, but just starting one song at it’s very start, spoken word intros be damned!
