MemberCause this would be my suggestion… if it’s a friendly gig as in you know the girl and some of the people at the party I would do it, it’s a fun time (sorority, like, duh?), and you get some exposure with a crowd that matters (again sorority girls) if you plan on playing out at clubs, and if your friendly with them they could understand you not knowing the genre but will still appreciate a good time… but it depends on how comfortable you would be… like I’m not the most into hip hop guy I know but I could get by at a party playing oldies (regulators, NWA, tone loc, baby got back – always goes over well) or newer lil jon type stuff and most hip hop crowds don’t care about “clean” mixes plus I could still throw in some remixes or mashups that I like.
One thing about requests though… if you don’t know the genre I assume you won’t have a very big library of it so I would take them but make it known you might not have it, unless I’m wrong about your collection. 😉
Good luck!

MemberSo… how much do you know about rap? and do you know any of the crowd that’s gonna be there?
DJ GRE
MemberTrue to all the above… always play the right track harmonic or not. Also dissonance is not necessarily a bad thing… the way the MIK circle works is by using the circle of fifths – which is really simply the easiest way to make things match; however there are WAY more ways to use keys in a mix – if you follow MIK on twitter they have tips that show some different ways of mixing around the circle.

Member“I like iTune’s smart playlists to organize genre categories. Torq recognized my iTunes comments & custom genre tags, but I had to switch between iTunes and Torq, a bit of a pain. Is Traktor the same, better or different here? I dont use the iTunes intergration too much (though I should). I don’t believe Traktor support Smart Playlists. If it recognizes them (I’d have to check) they would be presented as static playlists which means they won’t synch any changes made in itunes. I am not 100% sure on this so you might want to do more research. “
the only thing I would add to smittens extensive and helpful answer is this: traktor does show your smart playlists under the “itunes” tab in the browser section… however you cannot edit ANYTHING in those lists, so no shuffling tracks around, changing a name of a track etc. but if you’ve got your smart playlists loaded in itunes then it will be available to LOOK at and play from.

Memberit really does but really the two genres complement each other pretty well if put together just right… once you listen to tracks long enough you start to hear “ins” and “outs” – spots you can use as jumping off points.

Memberhey Paul… just wanted to give you some feedback… like the mix, good track selection but on this one the gain issue seems more prevalent, like at certain points I thought someone was covering my speakers up – are you using the gains as an effect? cause if that’s the case the timing might just be off as it gets noticeable and a little jarring. 🙂
just my 2 cents.

At the moment I’m only using beatport, I usually give their sales charts for my preferred styles a quick listen and then decide I don’t like them, so then I listen through the DJ charts for the same styles and usually find tracks I like. It’s worked so far, but always wonder if I could be doing more.
Usually if I find an artist that I really like… say for instance Diplo, I will look up and see if they’ve got a website, blog etc, in diplos case the maddecent.com site and My music searches then just kinda wander from there… that’s when I find great stuff. twitters been a godsend for being right on the ball about new releases and usually artists will have a free download up for a while.

Memberfor instance once I did an openingish set… I started out with some slow moombahton tracks really downtempo stuff… however people were already packed, floors grooving and I could tell they wanted something a lil harder and the big act of the night was about to come on so I pitch bended (?) the current track (currently going at 108) right at the edge of the buildup all the way down to a complete stop – then “Blau!” dropped a banging electro house track right at the drop (about 130 BPM) crowd went nuts!
DJ GRE
Memberyeah I know what you mean – that’s why I’ll usually just do the same thing – if it’s such a drastic change I feel like it deserves a big NOTICE me moment but that might just be me.
DJ GRE
Memberdepends on the songs you’re trying for… but usually a dubstep song will have a long breakdown or some semblence of one somewhere I would usually start a drumstep track off there and let it build up with the dubstep track and just cut it out once the drop happens… but again it depends on the tracks – usually I just do a quick cut where the track allows, a pause or something similar. Dubstep takes a little getting used to but like all genres has out points to listen for.

Memberyes… now as I don’t use traktor scratch can someone tell me what’s new? it sounds like theyre announcing something but I can’t spot the difference – unless the scratching has been improved?

mapping it though ala ean golden you can have faderesque buttons to fine tune your tracks. and the pro line have faders that can be remapped… but i can see why they’re not on there.

MemberThis sounds great man! About halfway through just wanted to let you know its sounding good.
PS now following you on soundcloud..DJ GRE
MemberIt would really depend on the crowd – it’s not jarring music (aka dubstep/heavy rap) so it won’t necessarily be noticed off the bat but I would play that one by ear probably start with that and gauge the reactions.
