Hahaha – this is slowly becoming true for me too, to pay for the debt I’ve amassed with all the misc. gear and music…

MemberI agree, if you have a tune that you know would be perfect but is not in the same key – just play the tune, trust me the crowd, except maybe one stickler, won’t notice the clashing keys. Or just mix when key isn’t an issue, like during a drum loop.
DJ GRE
MemberAhhh… the video support makes sense now that I think about it. As a personal preference do you use Serato Phil?
DJ GRE
MemberI would say that its all relative to how you think about your music. I have mixed in key personally – I love it. When I had vdj it used to tell me the keys to songs but sometimes it would get it wrong. Now I use MIK with Traktor. Sometimes when playing I have a little analogue synth with me to play some riffs here and there during breaks etc. and to play in tune I have to know what key the song is in. Mixed in Key so far has gotten most tracks completely right. So I would say if you just want to use it for mixing get vdj the home edition for free, check the keys and try mixing them together, see if it is something that maybe you’d want to invest in.

MemberAndrew and Andrew use iPads and iPods already for djing their sets and I know others use them for controller purposes – I don’t think its too hard to imagine them being used more in the future. My only squabble with them is the wireless connection – still a bit buggy for me to really trust it. But just for running djay straight into a system – I wouldn’t think any less of someone rocking a party with just an iPad – in fact I would think thats pretty cool. But just like digital I think it would be a long time before purists get used to the idea.

MemberI don’t personally own any denon units – but I have played with a mixer of theirs a little bit and I gotta say it seemed pretty solid. If I had the dough and was shopping for some newer more professional gear – their products would be a contender for my cash.

MemberYeah I had an over complicated explanation when a friend asked me why Dubstep was everywhere. Basically I said that since David Guetta started making club hits other artists wanted to work with newer djs and hipper djs to produce their songs which led to those djs wanting to produce with some of their more underground sounds and yeah it’s slowly starting to filter through pop music and just get under the mainstreams skin.
@djspekz yeah those drops are freakin’ insane, dropping his tunes peak banger hour people just go nuts!

MemberFor me it was the love of selecting playlists – I love music, listening to it, playing it, reading the history of it etc. Whenever I would get to a party with no music or with a very random playlist i will instinctively go to the music source and try to fiddle based on who is there. Even getting into a car with a bunch of different people I will search for a common song to get everyone reacting to the music! One time I was in a car with some older people (about 60 years of age approx.) and I tried playing some old jazz tunes – no go, next some rat pack – nothing, then I played some Beatles and before you know it the whole car was singing along! I just love playing the right track at the right moment – nothing else feels quite as good.

MemberI agree… there is a way to really play top 40 inventively… and a way to bomb it completely. A DJ in my area only spins pretty much straight pop and top 40 and does an amazing job of it – girls go nuts (and therefore the guys do too). He also is pretty creative with using videos to the point where you can just sit and watch the video mixes he has put together.

MemberYeah same here and once I started paying attention I always thought I’d see traktor scratch out more often since it seems like it is more flexible than serato – but again my information on it is really limited and I might be missing something.

MemberWhat kind of bag you looking to get Phil? Weighing my options…
DJ GRE
MemberI would have to say at this moment, datsik. Also digging steve aoki and girl talk. Diplo… and cheesy as they are lmfao – I don’t know why but Sky Blu’s dj sets look like a lot of fun and I can totally get behind that – no matter the music!

MemberShortest was about twenty minutes – was at a bar, the band didn’t have all the members and thought they were gonna no show – owner asked me to play, got everything set up played a couple warm up tunes…… then the band members arrived and I was promptly booted. Longest was my own doing – I got at the bar at about 7 pm figuring better early than late, then the prime time dj no showed – ended up playing till 2:30 am; about 7 and a half hours.

MemberRunning traktor pro 2 – the only thing I would say is definitely stay away from anything with less than 3gbs of ram. I switched recently to a Mac beacuse my PC had 3gbs of usable RAM and could not be upgraded and it was way too slow – keep in mind I had hollowed my pc out to pretty much just be running traktor… mixed in key and all of that was run on a seperate laptop… I had it crash a couple times on gigs which is petrifying. My old stats were: HP Compaq presario, running windows vista, 64 bit os, 4gbs installed ram – about 3gbs usable. from what I’ve seen a lot of djs I know (not using macs mind you) are using either a vaio or a dell. Hope I’ve helped!

MemberYes a bag is definitely my next purchase too. I am currently using two recyclable grocery bags and an old shoddy laptop bag – I need to look a bit more professional!
