MemberI have American Audio HP 550 headphones – they came free with a guitar I bought once. They work pretty well, volume and frequency seem to be ok, they have broken a bit and are currently being held together by duct tape so I will probably be looking at upgrading soon!

MemberTP2 for me… I love the effects… I’ve tried a bunch of other software but traktor just feels like home to me.

MemberI play guitar, bass, keys and can keep a beat on the drums. Played in some bands but nothing ever to serious – don’t want it to go to waste so sometimes I play some of those instruments while djing to add some live elements to my set.

Memberduring a club/top 40 type night… Slayer – reigning blood ; the guy promised it would start a mosh pit and get everyone pumped! – despite knowing that song quite well, I never played that one.

MemberI love mixing in Key for the aspect that it brings back my musical knowledge into the mix, things like almost anything in the key of Am will mix with anything in the key of C Major, things like that or basically building a chord progression with tracks; like i’ll play a ii-V-iv succession of tracks as a little joke to myself – which is why I don’t use the camelot system just the traditional notes. Like I said i’ll play some synth riffs over a tracks break down or sometimes if i’m feeling really confident in the track i’ll pull off a mini guitar solo and harmonic mixing helps me know what key i’m in or that i’m going to be in.

Memberthe Mixtrack is a solid choice, I would have bought it if it was available in my area when I was shopping – my first controller was the dascratch unit from stanton – found it for a bargain at $50. from there I’ve added the whole system to it, but just that one unit was good enough for basic mixing and learning.

MemberIt’s here in Anchorage, Alaska baby!!! It’s gonna be live, but I have no idea how the winner will be decided, like I said they have been very vague with the details….

Member1. Live, I will play what I think the crowd will like, I usually don’t pre-plan my sets. For instance if it’s supposed to be a house night but if there is clearly a hip hop crowd in the club, I will try to find a crossover song and maybe play a hip hop set for a bit – I love playing to the audience. I do like mixing almost everything, but right now i’m really into electro house and dubstep sounds watching people lose their minds to a HUGE drop is just awesome.
I started mixing with just house tracks – the simple 4×4 beats made it easy for me to learn how to beatmatch and gave me some quick satisfaction for mixing.

MemberBlue Monday has definitely been a saver for me too!

MemberAhhh… hate that, basically any situation where the music stops is an utter nightmare! One night I was djing with my old laptop and was doing simple mixes, one song to the next – no effects no complicated cue point juggling, nothing! Anyway while playing a song my softwares CPU usage shoots crazy I get massive amounts of distortion and just general nastiness, everyone looks over at the booth and I am not there! I had gone to check the sound at the bar and had to RUN back to the booth – pressed play on my ipod which was plugged into a backup line in on the mixer and lo and behold this was the night it decided to break… It was frozen on the ipod screen!!! I kept pressing play till I realized it wan’t going to work. Shut down my system, ran up to the bar got the remote for the jukebox, programmed three songs up and rebooted my system…. terrible terrible feeling. But everything else went fine… I am now super paranoid about my CPU usage, my eyes are always watching it – but I haven’t had any such issues with my new MBPro and hopefully I wont!

Memberalso… usually if I’m djing I try to take a nap earlier in the afternoon – One time I djed after being up from 6 am as it was a work day and the last two hours (12-2am) were just brutal on my neck, back and feet; especially since my job involves me NEVER sitting down.

MemberYes always reach for the girls first – the crowd will naturally build if girls are out there. But I cannot get behind line dancing songs… I purposefully have none in my library.
I am a HUGE MJ fan so thriller and billie jean are great go to songs for me on top 40/pop/house nights – those two will get anyone dancing… if you don’t dance to MJ I don’t know what to play for you…. 😡 also LMFAO/lil jon will usually get a pretty good fist pumping round going!
But during dubstep electro house nights i’ve been dropping skrillex ruffneck, or zedd dovregubben – that track gets a sick reaction!

MemberPersonally, this is something that came from playing guitar – I would invest in something you can grow with. I would say definitely separate controller and sound card – what if you like one but not the other? I always think you should start with a sound card then add a controller later, that way when you finally split the sound and start mixing with just the computer you realize, “Ah djings not for me.” or “I would love to not have to use a keyboard for this!”, then if its the former it will not have been too big of a loss. At least you have the option to change you know? Plus usually – not saying all the time but usually – the soundcards that come with controllers tend to be a little inferior in quality.
