ParticipantApart from line dances, which always fill up a dance floor pretty fast, play tracks that are timeless, that will be a hit 30, 50, even a 100 years from now:
“One More Time” – Daft Punk
“Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson
“In Da Club” – 50 Cent
“Mundian to Bach Ke” – Punjabi MCDJ eengenious
ParticipantWell the way I see most Djs doing this is with pen/paper. Or you run into various situations described on stuffdjshate.com, where the person requesting the song is rude, obnoxious, or intrusive.
I think every DJ should take the occasional request every now and then, I understand it’s the DJ’s job to read the crowd and figure out what works, but it’s arrogant to think you know better than the crowd. Personally, I take requests, but I may not play the song immidiately or at all. To that end, I’m trying to find a technological solution that works better than paper/pen or otherwise intrusive.
I’m not talking about an app that “replaces” the DJ or does the DJ’s work for them in any way. I simply want to change how requests are made, and how DJs receive those requests. That’s pretty much it. It’s still up to the DJ to decide if they want to play the song or not.
The concept of “social participation” – people pulling out their phones and voting for a song doesn’t work, and no one’s really solved this problem. I think something can be built around the hashtag idea, for djs who wish to participate
But I think in general there could be a lot done. Maybe in the future, this system could link with Serato/Traktor/etc and even find the song for you in your library. Just throwing out some ideas, based on what was discussed above.

ParticipantI like the idea of the hashtag. What about an app that allows you to log in with twitter, set up a hashtag, and then automaticaally/dynamically sort tweets as they come in? Multiple song requests could be tallied and put at the top of the queue, and you could swipe to delete once you played the song or something

ParticipantMaybe not directly related to dj’ing, but at its core, djing is about love for music. I listen to all types of artists, genres, time periods…music is my life. It took a while to upgrade, categorize, and catalogue everything to lossless – this is my personal collection (didn’t mean to come off as showing off or w/e) – so just proud of that.
My actual DJ playlist is about 500 songs

Yeah, that’s the philosophy I’ve been going with. Guess I’ll stick with it
Thanks for the feedback.

ParticipantI would say hip-hop is the hardest to mix

ParticipantSuperstition (jOBOT remix) – Stevie Wonder is a great party starter

ParticipantI’ve been using it for the past week or so, it’s pretty cool. I like the facebook integration/sharing playlists with friends.
I’m using it to discover new music or songs on the go, but I don’t think I would use the subscription service. Only about 40% is 320 kbps , which is deal-breaker for me.

ParticipantDo you use iTunes? There is a “Get Album Artwork” feature – it’s fairly accurate, might not identify all your tracks, but definitely a good portion

ParticipantI agree, but sometimes I just can’t bring myself to play songs like “make it rain” by travis porter

ParticipantCould you indicate what some advantages would be (particularly in terms of DJing) over the current model of downloading mp3s / adding to library / creating playlists?

ParticipantThing is, I’m somewhat of a hip-hop purist myself lol .
Huge fan of 2pac, Biggie, Snoop Dogg – basically 90s hip hop. Favorite artists today are Jay-Z, Kanye, Eminem, and Lupe – so there’s only so ghetto I’m willing to goDJ eengenious

ParticipantI don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, but I get mine from fiverr.com
