This isnt really a good argument, but they are so pretty! And using the same headphones they use in popular video clips or popular djs such as Guetta (even if it is a shitty dj) helps me market myself in my market, the top, chart and dance music venues.

I sometimes do hold them in my head and neck for 8 hours straight during longer gigs, and I still love them. The only downside is the need to have an extra set of batteries in my bag which cost no more than 2 dollars.
Ive been using them for like 1 year everyday from now and even use them as urban headphones, that means, nearly 15 hours of use each day, and they are still in perfect shape.

I actually did that once, downloading an electrohouse remix of Love The Way you Lie, but it didnt seem to be liked by the crowd and had to switch it out fast. Sure it was extremly easy to mix in and out, but I dunno, having 1 min where the people dont know where they are is something I dont like coz when they stop dancing its hard to turn them on (in the dancing sense) again. I rather have crappy transitions with a full dancefloor and people screaming because I put the track they wanted than smooth transitions that sound great but bore people 🙁 Maybe im heading for the wrong remixes.

I dont know if counting is really a good idea. It makes everything too mathematical and calculated, and DJing is art, not mathematics (though they are closely related lol but doesnt help my point)
I rarelly stop to count bars, I think its by far better just listening to the tracks, instinctvly stomping your feet to the ryhtm and just knowing when the bar or phrase is goin to start and end. Another thing you can do is count in your head 1, 2, 3, 4 1,2,3,4

No way! Im on your side with the Beats Pro Chris! They are not real monitor headphones, I know, but I wouldn’t change them for anything else.
I have the Beats Studio and they are amazing. The build quality is unmatchable, you will have to try hard to break them or play them at a really loud volume and hurt them, but you wont need to turn your volume down as their noise reduction is AMAZING. Its true they accent the lows too much, but thats what you really need for beatmatching, though at your level maybe it isnt important, it will be someday. Just remember to buy a COILED cable for it (the one home telephones use to prevent them from disconnecting)
I also have the MC3000 and it is indeed amazing too.
If you arent video DJing as I suppose (playing also with videos to show) you shouldnt use Virtual DJ and use Traktor which is in my opinion FAR better and it will boost your DJing by a lot.
The only thing you are needing are monitors, but do not worry, I started with just some simple Edifier PC speakers with a crappy sub woofer and learned the basics with that. Just practice with something like this or any audio system you have in your home or you could just use your headphones as the master out as they will enable you to monitor the ‘real’ mix, the one that everyone will hear, better, and use the crappy speakers to monitor (as if they where your headphones)
As monitors I now use the nEar 06 by ES. and altough I bought it used from a friend, I think they arent that expensive and sound great.
I also practiced with a normal iPod Dock (the ones you connect your ipod and play music) (one with an aux in) You dont really need expensive monitors at your level. In my opinion, just practice with what you have. If you have no skill, evne the most expensive equipment wont be of use. Just to give you an idea, I DJed in my bedroom for 1 year before even buying my first controller or an audio card and learned the basics that way.
If you start practicing the basics with no equipment, then, slowly, you will start to notice the needs you have, and buy acordingly 🙂
Woha, WALL OF TEXT, lol hope at least I was of any help 🙂

cool stuff, i dont know why i never did the: ”Wait for the break of the first song to end, slam the main melody of the second song, and filter the first song away.” ill try it 🙂
One issue I find with your tip DJimC is that DJ Friendly tracks are generally not liked by the this type of crowd as most love to sing the vocals along and when there are non they feel lost. Some tracks I use for these types of transitions are One by Sweedish House Magia, The Rattle by Bingo Player of Cmon by Tiesto vs Diplo, but there goes mi DJ friendly-Chart friendly list of tracks :S Do you have by any chance that top40 dance song mix uploaded somewhere so I can hear how you do it and what tracks do you use to keep the mood up?

Many of the tips above are useful. However, the only real thing I did to get my first gig is socialize, with everyone, not just the owners.

    Just a short anecdote:
One night I was chilling at home listening to some Rock, no mood to go out. My sister came to ask me if I wanted to go to Pacha with her and some friends of both. Against my own will, I decided to go and just go and chill to the club. There, just talking to random people and not really caring if they were ‘useful’ for my DJ carreer or not, I met a really cool guy and we chatted for a while. We added on Facebook and I saw he was an important party organizer in my country and he saw I was a DJ and there it was where he asked me if I wanted to play at a regular gig he organized every friday and was in need of a DJ. Obviously I accepted.

Be cool with everyone, go out to clubs even if it just to chill. Make people like you, make everybody you can like you (even if they arent club owners or organizers, they might end up being your friends and therefore potential fans and referalls), just have a good time and make new friends.

Hope I my anecdote was of any help 😀 Cya round!

The best thing to do is talk to the club owner/whoever hired you. If there are other DJs playing with you, just talk to them and make something up if the club owner doesnt have a clear choise. If you are the only DJ, play for the extra hour even if you are hired for a set number of hours (except if the owner clearly stated to stop after X hours), Stopping to play when your time slot ends just because they hired you for that amount of time seems in my opinion unprofessional and may put the club owner under pressure (having a club full of people at 4 am still expecting to dance hard with the DJ leaving the booth just because his ‘time slot’ ended)

as long as you dont sell your mixes and you buy your music/use free music (the original tracks uploaded for example to soundcloud with download allowed) it is 100%

i think the difference can only be heard in certain genres, like deep house, house, or heavy metal. i cant really tell the difference in quality between for example a hip hop wav or mp3, maybe it is just me
i used all wav format files, but ended up switching to mp3 because traktor handles them faster and better, while wavs take tons of time to load, even if it is already in traktor library (tried this only on windows)

i use my traktor audio 2 as a soundcard for mixing, but I also set it as default in windows using it to hear music. After using a difference card from the onboard one, you cant go back, the difference is just too noticeable
