ParticipantIt’s been about 2 years since I was on the DDJ Tips website. Started with DJ’ing and Phil’s courses….now i’m into Production…Ableton and Logic Pro X. Hard to believe how much Phil’s site has grown over the past few years.
Figured my Mac had somehow lost the keychain password to DDJ Tips until i noticed the above post.

ParticipantHow is it that Abelton does it right when NI, the ppl that designed maschine, didn’t?
(Can u tell this question has been bugging me for quite a while?!)

ParticipantI borrowed 1 of the acapellas used in part of the course (mainly bc I loved it and forgot all about how great those late 80’s…early 90’s… hip hop records are.
The acapella is “I Know You Got Soul” by Eric B. & Rakim. The backing track is a remix of “Sweet Dreams”.

ParticipantFinally got my F1 yesterday and haven’t been able to put the thing down!!!! I love it. This is what I have for my “Levels” remix so far. Did it while standing up and holding the f1 for the camera. Really intuitive piece of hardware once u spend the time with it. 3hrs passes by in what seems like 5min when I’m playing with this thing! Here’s a YouTube link to the vid. It’s a working progress…but I’m happy with how far I’ve come after only having the f1 for a day and a half!

ParticipantAlso what DJam said earlier about NI likely releasing a new version of Maschine that has HID in the future has me leaning toward being patient with deciding on the Maschine. Just for now. I love the Maschine
Not_a_DJ
ParticipantCool. So right now it seems like Maschine is exactly what I’m looking for once I make that hard dive into production. But for use during DJ sets most prefer to use what’s already there w/ the remix decks using the f1. I’m not saying 1 is better than the other….obviously the Maschine is the most capable out of the 2. It just seems most are using the f1 and loving it.

ParticipantI’ve got the pioneer HDJ 2000’s and I could easily wear them all day long. Same goes for the 1500’s. But the price is extremely steep. I’m somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to my headphones. Also have a pair of Beats by Dre Studio headphones….they aren’t very durable AT ALL unless u spring for the ultra expensive metal ones. Mine are virtually held together by duck tape. Seriously ghetto. The screws in the plastic headband weren’t large enough for the stress and they shot str8 through the plastic about 2 months after I got them. Mind you these are the 1st gen of beats by dres. When the studio version was the only version. They may have changed since then….and for pure sound quality I absolutely love them. As long as the world has duck tape and the speakers work in them ill cont to use them. Still…for DJ’ing I like something that’s designed to pivot instead of constantly fit flush on both your ears. In the end it’s all up to you….what sounds best a feels comfortable enough for you….while still fitting within your budget. Kinda wished I’d held back on the 2000’s and spent the xtra money elsewhere….but I don’t beat myself up about it. I love my pioneer headphones for DJ’ing. They really thought of everything in their design.

ParticipantMy bad…that’s not the APC. Got alittle mixed up. Been lookin at a lot of equipment lately. Cool vid though….really takes the live remix concept and busts it wide open.

ParticipantI did look at the APC 40 as well. I’m just a solid NI and Pioneer guy….only bc it’s what I’ve used in my limited time doing this stuff. I recently saw a DJ/performer/artist (whichever title u want to give him) that did NOTHING BUT live play/remixes for his entire set using the APC 40 on Youtube. Can’t remember his name…I think it was on Dubspot’s channel. He was doing a decent size festival and finger drums his entire set. That’s not something I’m interested in doing for myself….but it was amazing to me none the less. Just thought I’d mention that bc it did make me check out that piece of equipment.

ParticipantWow. Thanks Clockwise. Had no idea I could release 1 of my Traktor licenses…or send a pick to NI to solve the problem for hardware that has the software license issue.
And thanks for the input DJam. Always appreciated. Yeah the main reason the Maschine appeals to me personally is bc I can use it for production and DJ’ing. I have the imaschine app on my iPad and I find it extremely easy for me to come up with good beats using it (simple as it is….just a toy really) Also have GarageBand. Haven’t sprung for Logic Pro yet but the workflow is very similar….and i struggle with getting in the groove of things in constructing the basics of a track/remix with the mouse and grid….at least for beats. Maybe that will change with time….like anything else. Like i said…its just that i loved how intuitive and easy imaschine was for me. Having said all that….may sound odd…but im leaning toward the f1 for right now. Im a EXTREMELY novice producer….meaning all I’m hoping for, right now, is that I can even learn how to produce the way I want to. I’m also a passionate DJ that loves the immediacy of the creativity Traktor and its remix decks allows you to have. The only reason im thinking F1 is bc, i think, it fits me best for where im at with all this. I struggle with thinking to far ahead of myself, especially when im passionate about something, instead of staying in the present moment and doing whats best RIGHT NOW.

ParticipantThanx for the advice guys. I haven’t checked on eBay yet. Might buy the f1’s on eBay if that’s what I decide since i obviously dont need another Traktor license. If I got a used Maschine on EBay would the Maschine software work? I don’t think it will bc the serial numbers have already been used by someone else…I may be wrong.

Participant….and if I go with Maschine I’d just soon go with the full size version instead of the Mikro. I know the Mikro is great….but if I go with Maschine the idea, for me, would be that it give me huge amounts of hands on tactile control. I thought about going for the Mikro for awhile…but given the cost….for me I might as well spring for the Mack daddy

ParticipantI also know you get TONS of sound packs and instruments with Maschine…..but with where I’m at right now I’m not sure if its a benefit or overwhelming hinderance. I don’t currently use the sounds in the Remix Sets much….but I also know the program you run with Maschine is set up to run those types of sounds. Making it easier….I think?
