You haven’t said where you are, there’s no point me giving you a bar at Lands End if you’re in John O’ Groats : ). Also remember there’s no such thing as a free night as some one will be paying in time organising, buying music, maintaining the gear. These are the hidden cost some people don’t think about.

To get a free room depends on the night you’re looking, how many people will be attending and how much they (the bar) can make when it comes to small clubs/bars. You have to remember that early in week (Sun/Wed) they will have a skeleton staff working (if they even open) as it’s quiet so if it was going to be busy at you’re party they would need more staff which is going to cost them. So let’s say each extra member of staff will be £50 x 2. The bar have to re-coup that before they even start to make a profit so they may expect you to cover that charge just in case your party flops. There’s also security to think about, if they’re expecting a certain amount of people they have to have door staff, well where I live they do. You haven’t said if you expect to use their sound equipment or you’re taking your own

Thursday to Saturday finding a club or bar in a centre for free is nearly impossible. I’ve done a few private parties in city bars at weekends (Fri/Sat) that have a side room for hire but the client has put money behind the bar for some free drinks and put food on. The last club party I did was on Sunday which the client got for free which started in the afternon and the manager was happy for it to go on until closing if the money kept flowing. However, I charge for a set time and then charge overtime by the hour. lol

A lot Pubs, some private hotels and social clubs have free functions rooms, some may charge a deposit only to cover any damges. Even then some may not want certain types of music played, regular nights, or they will may want access to be allowed for the normal everyday clients.

BT has a trail d/l think of it of Itunes for DJs. There’s also a colour/mood system which I’m still not sure about. It will play a track and ask you to assign a colour based on the mood of that track it then stores that information and looks at your collection and assign colours based on ????. The more tracks you process the more accurate it’s supposed to get. So with the key and colour it’s supposed to assist in create a superior flow.
Price isn’t an issue for us but for the younger (not that I’m saying you’re old) beginers or people just wanting to try something then free can be a good starting point.

I read it some time ago before I joined the forum. For non DVS users though RB can be a handy “free” program whereas MIK is $58 and BT$35. RekordBox tends to get looked over becuse it’s seen as a Pioneer product specific to the CDJ’s but it has it uses for non Pioneer users. I’m not sure how accurate any of the progams are as you’ll always find someone somewhere with a tale of woe about their experience with a particular bit of software or hardware. I found Beatunes to have more functions than MixedInKey which was why I went for it and still use it.

@Tommy > with the current line up of 4 DJ’s the event will finish at 7pm. Ess Jay may be taking a 7-8 slot so the latest finsih will be 9pm.
Guys, you can upload you mix sets up to 120mb, if you have any productions you can upload them and either set them as free downloads or put a charge. If you are going to charge it would be better you set up a personal account.

Over 30yrs for me on and off but at the moment I just do mobile work so I’m thinking of entering the Pioneer competion to get exposure for club work.

A great mixer, better than DJM700 but if I remember right there’s no send/return on it so bear that in mind if your thinking about FX units.

How are you finding RB? I’ve nothing but issues and the new release seems even worse. I’m going to do a complete uninstall tonight and try a fresh clean install. I’ll ahve re-analyse my collection which takes about a week but it’s that or nothing.

That’s another one for ya. See you at BPM. I’m hoping to get in on the Pioneer competion.
I don’t know why so many established DJ’s are entering they should step back and let some new comer get a chance of exposure. May be it’s just me but I wouldn’t need the prize or the stage if I was backing top artist or playing a major venues.

I went from controller to using CDJs due to needing a multi format platform. I also wanted to be able to use my full selection of music without the need for a laptop. I was a Traktor user so still wanted a music management programme for some of my gigs hence going with the CDJ’s and RekordBox
With your set up and style of mixing you’d probably loose more than you’d gain. However, going to a DVS could open up a new world of mixing for you. If you did want to go to DVS I’d sell up and use the money to get a high spec controller set up and still have some cash for a weekend away.

A BPM is fixed by the beat the only way to change it would be to warp the track in a program like Ableton. You can’t automatically set tracks in Traktor unless you use the sync. Manually you need to shift the pitch fader but like I said above if the BPM of two tracks are wide apart you need to set the pitch range high on the settings. It much easier and better to have close BPMs

EDM is such a wide net to cast. I play Tech, Deep and Soulful House along with other genres like Trance, Techno and Progressive. I like to use long transitions loops and vocal over lays to create new sounds. Playing the latest track isn’t really a must for me as I want to try to create a unique sound of my own without being a producer. However, I do try to keep up with the latest pre releases. If you and your friend are talking about commercial/club/vocal/chart remixes then new will always be wanted along with the classics. What do you play?
