Guy’s I think it might be best if we now use the FB page for posting our comments etc
    http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Back2Back-DJs/416915021706557
The logon is the same as Mixify so you’ll all have admin rights. Fell free to upload although the page may need re-creating so people can join. I’m useless when it comes to FB

I’ve posted a comment on the Mixify FB page about the recordings not posting. Remember thisis still beta. Good new for Traktor uses is they’re intergrating Icecast so the tracklisting will be submitted automatically. If you’re a Traktor user go to their FB page and register for testing.
I’ll be setting up a slot for this Sunday sometime today too.

Anyone who has the Mixify login can use the same details for Google+ and FaceBook. Any Facebook Gurus can help sort the page as FB has never been my thing. : )

The main advantage of CDJ’s over midi controllers is the CDJ’s multi format playability. I know that if I’m playing out with my CDJ’s and the laptop goes down I can use a USB stick, if that fails I can go to CD’s. However, controllers can give you the ability to be very creative with your mixing. I’d check YouTube’s 10minmix series for various mixing styles on different setups.
Portability is a two edged sword chances are you’ll need to take your controller, soundcard, and laptop where ever you play but if you use CDJ’s you can sometimes only need to a USB stick. The downside of CDJ’s is the burning of CD’s and of course if you need to take your own set up. Most of the bars in my area use CDJ800s with a few with 1000s’. As I use 900’s with the RekordBox application I take my own CDJ’s most of the time.
The basics like beatmatching can be learned on either but with controllers and DVS you can be tempted to use the sync, or you may find find the sync allows you to apply a more creative style. Take a look at Ean Golden on YouTube for truly creative controllerism.
So you need to ask yourself what style of mixing you want to do. Do you want 2 decks or 4 and then look at what set up best suits you style and budget.
if you go with CDJ’s you’ll need a mixer and if you want to use them with a DVS you may also need a soundcard so you’ll be limited to used gear with your budget. Used gear is not a bad thing as I built over time starting with a used Vestax VCI100 controller which I updated with a custom firmware from Dj Tech Tools that made it in to an awesome controller. When I sold it I got my money back because it is such a good controller that holds it’s used price. I then bought some used Radius 3000’s to use as controller with a DDM4000 mixer and to give me a multi format platform. For me I found CDJ’s more comfortable to work with so once I had done enough gigs to pay for them I upgraded to a Pioneer set up.
Go to you local DJ shop and try the gear to get some idea of the feel. You’ll be surprised how the small things like the feel of a knob or slider can effect your choice. If you like the small jog wheels and the idea of very creative mixes look at a controller. If you like CDJ’s and what they offer look at a used CDJ 400’s with a mixer which may be just in your budget with a cheap mixer. Larger jog wheels like on the CDJ1000’s will be more than you’re current budget but there are the motorised platters of the Denon CDJ’s DN S5000 or DN S3500 that have 7″ platters which you could possibly pick up with a mixer on budget.

Great mixes from everyone yesterday, it was great to hear you guys in action. I’m not sure if the technocal faults were to do with the site as it seems they were having some issues yesterday. None of the recording got posted and some people were unable to set up events yesterday. I’m certainly up for making this a regular event and hopefully the B2B family will grow.

Be aware that your drive format may need a plugin to work on a Mac or you will have read only access. The additional cost of a Mac puts me off as most Windows laptops are easily capable of running DJ software.
When my last laptop died, the hd drive went, I had to purchase one qucikly so bought a Dell Studio 15. I stripped out all the extras diable any unwanted hardware so it’s configured to be used strictly for DJing and music. I then repaired the old one by replacing the drive and that’s used as the general internet horse.
If your looking for a dedicated DJ windows Laptop rather than an everyday work horse you can have them pre-configured for audio, custom built or configure it yourself (there are guides on Youtube) Illuminated keyboards help. I’d certainly go for as much RAM possible 2Gb minimum, prerably 4Gb to 8Gb (as above stay away from Win8 for now). As you’re running external HDDs the in built one may not matter but SSDs are the way to go.Like you I have a large collection, just under 2Tb but to be honest I could carry off any mobile gig playing music for all ages and taste with 50Gb to 100Gb of music and if I was doing a 4hr club set I’d use a 64Gb flash drive.

You’ve either got a lot of WAV’s or enough Mp3 music to play back to back for well over a year : )

Playing in a bar or lounge can be so varied from place to place. The club type bar and the chillout bars. Places you have to please the people and places you have to soothe the people.

    The Club type Bar
The club type will have loud music and a quickly changing crowd as they move from place to place getting drunk before they head home or head for the clubs. Here you’ll need to play by the numbers to a crowd who won’t remember the last track you played or that you beautifully merged two tracks on the fly to create an awsome mashup. I try to get away from places where I become a request DJ, request are for my mobile gigs. Yes it helps to pay the bills but I’m not lucking fame or fortune.

    The Chillout Bar/Lounge
I personal love the chillout bars and lounges as the crowd tend to be more static regulars that aren’t just out for a good night they’ve come out to be at that particular venue because of the atmosphere, an atmophere that you the DJ help to create. For me these type of gigs are the best, it’s like being a painter; you don’t paint by request you deliver your art and people will appreciate it, hopefully. In these places you can get a good relationship going to the point where it’s like playing to family. It very much about creating an ambience where they can relax, no loud music, no pumping bass, no Zabiela mixing.

The truth is the Club bars are more common with the ethos of pack em in get and get the money. Very little dancing but plenty of staggering as they down the cheap drink offers.

I use the Genre Column and comments. eg Genre would Soulful House Vocal in the comments I’d put Swinging or Sax blowout. I then create a general playtist with all my Soulful house tracks in and I can filter the columns. I will also create specific sub playlist so the under Soulful House will be other playlist containing vocals, instrumentals, piano breaks etc, and other contains Moods like High enery, Mid tempo, Smooth. There’s duplication of tracks in each folder but it makes for a quick find. Some of my tracks I’ll list in multple genre playlist if if fits so under my main Soulful House playlist there a V/G playlist that could include some Funky House, Tech House or anything that I think goes good. It’s just my way of quickly cross referencing my collection. Then every set I mix is also saved as a playlist, every track that gets a good response is tagged. That’s reminded me of the one irritating thing in RB is that you can’t amend the tag information on the fly if the decks are linked to it all you can do is tag(tick) for future reference.

I don’t trust the search option on any software when playing live

@Rob > The colour system comes in to play when creating playlist either manually or letting beatunes do an automatic playlist based on your criteria. Similar to the way itunes creates a playlist, I have had some suprisingly good results to. You can export those playist in to Traktor or any DVS, in my case I put it on usb stick and did a broadcast. Admitedly I don’t use the auto function normally as intially I got it purely for the Key funtion.

RekordBox as it stands now has it’s own Key recognition which is the main reason for this post. I found itunes slow to respond making tagging a slow process whereas RekordBox is much more responsive. There’s a progam called Rekord Buddy that allows you export all infomation from RekordBox in to Traktor, beatgrid, cue points, loops etc. I’t’s freeware from a DJ here: http://www.facebook.com/DamienSirkis the link is on his FB page
