It’s always about you, that’s why you’re the DJ. If it wasn’t about “you” there’s be another DJ there or a Juke Box. The first time something goes wrong it’ll be you the crowd looks to or boos.

ParticipantI’m going to kick off 3pm GMT that leaves some slots leading up to Forensic who’s on a 6pm GMT AND Ernon is on at 8pm GMT. Any other intersted DJ can take a 1hr between these times or I’ll be doing a 3hr set and hopefully Forensic will do 2hrs.

ParticipantThere a lesson to be learned and one he should have known. Have a back up! I feel sorry for the DJ but it’s a novice mistake especially as CD’s are prone to scratches no matter how well you look after them.

ParticipantDecide if you want to play music in clubs or play your type of music in clubs. It’s best to start with a wide mix of genres then as you make a name you can narrow down to the genre you the most passion for. Like Terry said, get some business card made. I carry two types, one for my mobile DJ work which promotes me and my DJ partner and a personal card which promotes me as a House DJ. I’m now leaving the mobile work to concentrate on getting club/bar work playing the music I have a passion for so I’ve bought some cheap memory sticks to put my audio mixes on and a video of me mixing which get handed to club promoters and managers. For a what equates to less than a £1 per handout I think it’s a great way to promote. Use facebook, Google+, Mixcloud (as there no limit on the mixes) etc. Promoting yourself and getting your foot in the door is not an easy road and will take hard work, a thick skin and perseverance.
Get out to the clubs get talking to the DJ’s, the bar staff, the door staff, the events manager, the bar manager, the clubers. If your DJ friend is doing any other gigs go with him even if you don’t get to play, introduce yourself to the promoter. If you do get to play a 30min set all the better. I always carry my own USB stick (16gb) with music on just in case I get a chance to play at a party I’m going to as most DJ’s use a laptop these days and if the have CDJ’s with a usb port even better.
A lot of my mobile DJ work I got from a signing up for PLI with a DJ website for the £49 it cost for the insurance I made my money back and a profit in the first 2 weeks from the referals they passed on. I’ve now found a similar site for DJ’s who want club work. I got turned down when I first applied but I didn’t give up they’ve now accepted my application so for a 6mth subcription at £89 pounds I think it’s worth it. I’ll let you know how it worked compared to me promoting myselfOctober 11, 2012 at 10:06 am in reply to: What's your biggest tip for DJs using PA systems for the first time? #1013390DeeJay SiBoogie
ParticipantDefinetly have things on seperate power supplies. I have my decks and mixer on one, the amp rack on another and the lights on another. Another tip which saves me a lot of stress, have it all pre-wired. I have a stand with an in built power inlet, xlr outs and a wifi router (it similar to a ZOMO stand but cost much less) I have a rack case with my amps, xovers, EQ etc all wired up so all I need to do is run the xlrs from my stand and plug the speakers in. After ever gig everything gets turned down before powering down so at the next gig there’s no sudden pop on power up. My top tip is quality over quantity when it comes to sound, if you need to crank it up to full consider upgrading. There’s nothing worse then full volume distortion, get out on the floor a few times during the night to listen because as the crowd fills the room the sound will change and if your speakers are at either side of you what you hear is not what the crowd hears
Here’s some pics of my desk it double as my home workstation too, it so pretty even the wife likes it : )

Some monitors are great some won’t help you at all. I played in one club and for some strange reason the had the monitor underneath the DJ booth so the speakers faced up you could hear a thing from them but you could feel the bass in you feet. Luckily they’re having a re-fit and will be repostioning them. Also, you’ll be used to stereo sound at home whereas clubs tend to have a mono set up all you’ll need to concentrate on is the DJ mixer. If your not sure about the best level check with the sound engineer if there is one. Red lining is not good but it’s not always bad as most good mixers have plenty of head room. If your the first or only DJ get there early to test the level but remember what I said above about the difference of a empty room vs a full one and the warm sound from a warm amp and speaker couls compared to when it first fires up.
One last thing be prepared for the BUZZ!

ParticipantAs a CDJ/RekordBox user this has got me interested as it could be comparable to RekorBox AP for the new 2000nexus for me a 900 user. For just under £50 including the IOS app it might be worth a look. My one concern is my experience with RekordBox hasn’t been fantastic so it leaves me wondering just how stable CROSS is.

We’re still going Rob, it seems the Regular guys are myself, Ernon, Tripl3, Forensic and Torree Bot. Your more than welcome to join us. You need to set up a Mixify account and when playing as part of B2B use our logo

ParticipantThe post wasn’t suggesting that Phil isn’t fair with his reviews it more about reviews in general and how they never seem to tell the whole story. Take Pioneer for example “The industry standard” they always seem to get great reviews but are over priced, have poor quality control and their Rekord software which their CDJ’s are so reliant on is so full of bugs it should be on the discovery chanel. I was wondering what peoples thoughts on reviews were and the experience they’ve had buying gear.

ParticipantThere’s a FB page with B2B login details, it still needs some work though. There’s also a Google+ account so you can post video’s to both FB and Youtube using the B2B login. if we can can lift the brand it would be great and for the UK based DJ’s I’m considering the possibilty of booking a venue next year seeing as I’ll be touching the big 50

ParticipantI think there have been issues, some guys were saying the same thing yesterday. I suggest posting on Mixify Facebook page

ParticipantI set an early slot (2pm) thinking others would slot in after me so I think we may have to organise things. At the moment it’s a matter of looking to see who’s booked a slot but there’s no way to know who else will be playing until the slot is booked. Still did a great 2hr set, I would have done 4hrs but had other business to take care of.

ParticipantHere’s a tip … Don’t get drunk or high when you’re working it’s a sure way not to get invited back.
