ParticipantYeah, an Android solution is certainly going to be a less expensive tablet.

ParticipantI realize that:
“And I don’t think you want to be caught in a situation where you are comfortable with your controller that you spend some serious money on only to find it is no longer supported by your software.”
Doesn’t literally state that they are going to remove MIDI support completely, but without further comment, that is still very strongly implied (I am not saying that you intended the implication, but that it was there nonetheless). I was merely providing further comment, hopefully in a way that was enjoyable enough, as I have enjoyed the thread.
As far as “your 2 cents,” Chuck, you have to give yourself more credit than that – you are an incredibly respected moderator here (and well deserved, you have clearly demonstrated your knowledge), it is not uncommon for folks ’round here to take what you say as gospel. Not your fault, but it IS something to keep in mind. Knowing that folks take what you say as gospel is part of why I may come off as a little argumentative with you, if I do… it’s not meant that way, I’m just trying to counterbalance things a little when what you are saying is sounding a lot more authoritative than you may have intended.
You are one of the primary authorities here, after all.

ParticipantYou could look into a tablet of some sort and use one of the DJ softwares for it – you can do this without a controller until you build up the dosh to buy one. It’s not a perfect solution, but might be workable for your needs. It’s also not a free solution, but can be cheap depending on what kind of tablet you pick up.

ParticipantYeah, it’s fair to say that Pioneer won’t put any effort into mappings for Traktor. On the other hand, the quality of mappings that can be downloaded from the Bible or from the search engine over at DJTT is pretty impressive – I think most people will be perfectly satisfied with what’s available, provided they’re not trying to get some obscure Chinese controller working with it.
Hrm… since NI hardware tends to include perpetual upgrades, while I can see them not putting effort into jogwheels via MIDI, they won’t be able to just stop supporting them completely – plus, they want to sell you a DVS system to go with your S8. In Traktor, it is not a new thing that a serious turntablist either uses HID or DVS, so that’s not much of a stretch. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them come out with dedicated jogwheel HID controllers to sit by your S5/S8 too.
Now, I could (of course) be completely wrong (as I often am), and NI is going to make the move to completely drop the ability to use a MIDI controller… but, I think it a bit hyperbolic to state it with as much certainty as you did in the post I originally responded to.

ParticipantI must say, while they may not put much effort into supporting non-NI gear, I would be completely floored if NI completely removed the ability to use non-NI hardware. The amount of ill will this would generate would be absolutely incredible. It’s one thing to not put any effort inside the company to work with external gear, but if they remove MIDI connections completely, they would never recover from the *bleep*storm.
Additionally, they would be a legitimate target of a class action suit from folks who are legally entitled to the upgrade, but are not using NI gear… such as anyone who has an NI audio interface but uses a non-NI controller.
This is way beyond the scope of believable… I agree that they’re going to offer less and less official support for unofficial hardware, but I do not see where they have the legal ability to completely drop the capacity to use a MIDI controller if you or the company that manufactures it are willing to build a mapping for it.

ParticipantFor what it’s worth, Mixxx also supports the DDJ SB2, and is F/OSS rather than requiring a trial. No big deal, except for it could mean that you burn your trial of Mixvibes testing your device, and later on down the road can’t try it out once you’re done sorting your issues.

ParticipantNot everyone was excited to see the Piggers go all the way this year, so instead, we got down to some groovy music.
This was my first chance to drop the groovy funk since moving back to the US from Europe, it sure did feel good. Hoping to play more parties in the future, or I may either get myself a radio slot or something similar. I gots ta play!

ParticipantYou might want to clarify the part where you use the term Pirate (and be careful how you use it in the future), as talking about piracy is against the terms of service here and will get this thread locked if you DIDN’T mean someone who scours Soundcloud for the tracks that are legitimately available for free download rather than ripping tracks that aren’t supposed to be downloadable. (They’re all going to be low quality that way anyway, so why would you want them?)
I spend all my time scouring the net for tracks that have been posted for free download myself, my collection is probably about 95% free, and I do it for the same reason – I am not making the dosh right now to buy a lot of music. Funny thing, though… I’ve got a pretty brilliant collection of music. The number of artists who are giving their music away is pretty astounding, I do it myself (it would feel hypocritical not to, though I do post the really good stuff as PWYW in case anyone wants to toss a tip my way).
Now, to the like-to-download things… yeah, these guys can be annoying. It’s a standard feature of the various hosting services the folks are using.
Following the artist and liking the track I’m downloading not only seems fair, but is part of my process, so I’m OK with giving an automated like if the track is good enough to download – I’ve already clicked like before I’ve downloaded it. I was already liking the tracks that are free downloads before all this started to mark the track so I didn’t accidentally download it twice.
I tend to be a little stingy with my reshares, though… they tend to really clutter up the stream, which sucks, and just because I’ve downloaded a track doesn’t mean it will survive to make it into my setlist, so it seems to be putting the cart before the horse to reshare a track before I’ve had a chance to really work with it. If the app forces a reshare, I just un-reshare it as soon as it’s done. I leave the Soundcloud page open until the track is downloaded anyway, so this is easy to do… but I leave the like in place.
If the app forces a comment, then I back out and don’t download the track. I go back and comment on tracks that I have something to say about, but I’m not going to make something simple and stupid up on the spot just to download it… I mean, yeah, it’s free, but that’s pushing good taste beyond my boundaries. I’ve been considering “I don’t like forced comments,” but I find the practice tacky and just don’t support it by downloading the track and working it into my sets. Sometimes, I’ll comment “Don’t like forced comments, didn’t download,” but rarely. I do make an exception if the track blows me away enough that a comment is easy to come up with, but usually, I have to spend a bit of time with a track before it blows my mind.
