ParticipantI get a similar ‘what was I thinking’ vibe sometimes. I download just about every song when I’m looking through beatport, music blogs, etc. and at the time of download, I always think ‘wow, that song is amazing, I can’t wait to play it for people’ but the moment I throw it in a mix and it’s too late to turn back, I get the feeling that the song is terrible and have to quickly try to transition out of it. I think most of it is due to my habit of downloading every song I think is decent.

ParticipantI’m a beginner but I have the same issue. I usually play house parties for free and everyone around here, all races, are really into mainstream rap and dirty south style rap (I live in the south. They always wanna hear Yo Gotti, Gucci, Lil Wayne, etc.). The first time I played one of these parties was the first time I DJed outside of streaming/practicing and I made the mistake of playing what I wanted to hear, which was straight dubstep, DnB, and house. Needless to say, my listeners weren’t pelased. The next time I played, it was the same house with a slightly different crowd but similar tastes. Even though I thought I’d learned my lesson and compromised by playing crunkstep, dubstep remixes of popular rap songs, and trap, they still weren’t happy with these genres. It got to the point where I just packed up and went home because I was refusing to mix what they wanted to hear. Honestly, I don’t know if I should just learn to play stuff even if I don’t want to or be adamant about my choice of genres. I can definitely relate though.
The most annoying part is that friends think they can get over on me by going over to my laptop while I piss or smoke a cig or whatever and throw rap songs onto my decks and try to take over my controller while they have absolutely zero experience with DJ hardware or software…or they think they can pester me and bring down my morale by talking shit into my ear while I play what I enjoy ‘no one wants to hear that rave shit, etc.’ It’s really discouraging for me.

ParticipantDamn man, that sounds awesome! You’d probably get a lot of love if you posted up some pics and a short tutorial or summary like you just did. That kind of DIY stand sounds great.
A little off topic: Another added problem with picking out stands is that I’m unfortunately using a desktop style external harddrive for my music currently and need room to stand it up or put it somewhere safe (was DJing a party a few weeks ago and was really drunk with several people crowded around me when someone kicked it over and now the power base is all messed up). I really worry about losing 2TB of data so I might have to invest in a more portable 500GB external soon. Also wish I had USB 3.0 on my laptop because it takes forever and a day to load the contents of larger folders on an external harddrive.

ParticipantThanks, Terry. I didn’t realize there’d be an issue with latency but I’ll do anything I can to reduce it. I haven’t ordered the Mixtrack Pro yet as I’m still undecided on headphones. Also, so I won’t bump the other thread needlessly, thank you for your input on headphones. I’m still trying to decide but only because the Zomo’s are a little pricier..though may be worth the ability to flip the cups (I’m not sure if the Sennheiser HD-205-II’s have this ability). Again, thanks for all of your help…seems you’re my personal DJ tutor on these forums lol

ParticipantThanks for the help as always, guys! Unfortunately, I sold my Mixtrack and ordered a Mixtrack Pro before I could read your response, synthet1c. Now I need help choosing headphones! *facepalm* I posted in another thread but I will quote my post here since I’m trying to avoid making yet another thread.
I’m actually needing help picking headphones too and instead of making a new thread, I’ll post here. My budget is between $50-$75 but I could possibly push to $100. I’ve looked around at reviews on this site and others and still can’t decide!
I’ve basically narrowed it down to Zomo HD-1200’s, Sennheiser HD-205-II’s, or Numark Red Waves. Should I be looking at other options or which one of these three should I purchase? Any and all help is definitely appreciated, as always.

ParticipantThanks guys. I haven’t bought a flight case yet because I only have a Numark Mixtrack and I’m sure a case would cost about the same as my controller did. Unfortunately, I’m low on funds too. All of these ideas are wonderful! As a matter of fact, a few DJ friends suggested the same things you guys did 😀

ParticipantI was hoping to find something that didn’t require a table. Like a standalone stand for everything. Could’ve swore I seen someone with one for his NS7 but I doubt I could get one within budget. As always, thanks for the reply, Terry!

ParticipantThanks for the help! Might as well go ahead and buy a sound card even though this is a cheaper option. Only reason I haven’t is because I haven’t done much playing outside of the house but it’d be nice to practice. Now if only my speakers at home didn’t suck.
