Akai MPD24. I use it mainly to trigger effects.

I also have a Midi Fighter, but I use it for samples.

Well, 90% of my mixes on my website are live, although I don’t use a lot of “tricks”. I mainly push solid programming and good blending.

Have a look and ask questions. I agree with the other responses to. Just look for livesets and go from there.

I’d say tagging software is a must. Those two software titles I linked to in my last reply are both freeware.

I used to do it all manually (Right-Click and select “Properties”), but since I started using MP3Tag, it’s so much easier.

I’m still of the mind that Windows works beautifully when you have solid hardware backing it up. It’s why Macs run solid, because Apple won’t allow substandard hardware into the fold.

Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony, etc…just research and find a laptop with good reviews that show it’s got solid hardware. If you can’t afford Apple then just make sure you’re not buying some cheap POS laptop from a discount store.

I believe most of the problems DJs end up having with their stuff is due to using minimum spec hardware and low quality hardware. A cheap Gateway laptop will fail you…and 9 out of 10 times there isn’t a $300-$600 solution that won’t bring you problems.

I agree with you Emma…but it’s still sad how many female DJs are pushing “hot babe in the booth” over anything.

Maybe in their eyes they figure they would milk things for what they can get, then hopefully marry a trust fund baby and be a “trophy wife”.

I unfortunately think that this won’t change, as we see even the guys now falling into the Music Industry aspect of this. So we’re going to see more men and women seemingly tossing their body image, fashion, and looks into the priorities bin when seeking out to be a “bigger DJ”.

The newest edition of WordPress now will not support IE6.

They simply feel if you’re going to live in the past, then you get left behind. Even Windows Update is pushing IE10 on people as a critical update. There isn’t any excuse anymore to have an outdated browser.

I try to keep it simple.

I’ll put the artist, title, year if I can get it, and the date I received the MP3 in the comments section.

For the Genre, I keep it simple and not get deep into subgenres. I’ll usually organize things into subgenres in folders and iTunes, but not on the genre part. Most of the reason is I like to keep things “open for translation”. One person’s deep house is another person’s tech house.

I also don’t like to put “additional info” on the song names. Just the title and remix. I’ll even get rid of the “featuring _____” things i see put in titles.

Here’s an example. Say I got this track:

Stefano Prada & DJ Vaven – “Waiting for Your Love” feat. Sidney King (Big Room Mix)

I’ll lay out the ID3 tag as so:

Artist: Stefano Prada & DJ Vaven featuring Sidney King
Title: Waiting for Your Love (Big Room Mix)
    Genre: House
    Year: 2011
    Comment: 2011-07-10

Since I use MP3Tag to do my music, I’ll then use the program along with a batch rename thing I like to use and come up with the final FILE NAME as

    Stefano_Prada_and_DJ_Vaven _F_Sidney_King-Waiting_for_Your_Love_(Big Room Mix).mp3

I’d then file it into a folder and playlist called “House – Trendy” and move on.

That’s just how I like to do it. I like my files to be easily understandable anywhere and organized so I don’t have to jam tons of info into the file name or ID3 Tag. I’ve only now started putting in album art when I get it.

I don’t think we need to standardize, because everyone has their own way of organizing music. Plus to standardize would mean DJs were sharing music, thus the outcome of a standard system of naming and tagging.

Now I do think the MP3 Stores like Beatport should force a standard on the artists who put their tunes up for sale, but I think they do that now.

It’s because there is still many more male DJs than female DJs out there…thus it’s a rare thing.

I give you credit Emma for not milking it the way others do. I swear I see some female DJs doing more photoshoots than I see them spin.

Many tech publications are praising Google+ as being better…but we shall see.

Already though they’re trying to discourage “brands” from signing up, so I don’t think it’s a good promotion medium for DJs…yet.

Give it a shot. Make a demo and press kit.

You would be surprised how many clubs would book someone even for a weeknight if they know he’s not from their town (thus they can push it as a big out of town name) but they don’t have to pay travel expenses.

ALSO…if you get the spot. Utilize it. Burn 50 CDs and put your info on it (website, etc) and give them out to the crowd.

I think in this genre/scene, producing is the way in. You make tunes that people notice and like, then it helps you grow. I will tell anyone though to not be surprised if you grow, but notice your hometown doesn’t seem to be as into you as other places. That’s just how it goes. I know guys here in Chicago that play for thousands in a big event somewhere on the other side of the globe, but end up playing for 50-100 people at the most here in Chicago. If a massive happens they’re not even booked.

Such is the way of things. My suggestion is to produce, maybe get involved in a notable online radio station, do a regular thing, build the following, and eventually someone outside of your neck of the woods will bring you out to play.

I even suggest to many to use your vacations as opportunities to play. I think I’ll start another topic on this.
