You can always ask me. Granted I can’t come over and show you in person, but I told you to hit me up if you needed advice/guidance.

ParticipantOLD: We called them scratch pads
NEW: They’re called slipmats

ParticipantI usually keep my slipmats on the turntables. Others I store in an empty record sleeve.

ParticipantI had many “teachers”. My brother, who wasn’t a DJ, did push me to try things he heard/saw other DJs do.
One friend named Ezwerk did show me a lot of the basics back in the early 90s when I started. Just to give me an idea of how blending/mixing works.
Other than that, my teachers are when I see talented guys play and I want to try to emulate what I liked into my own sets.

ParticipantThanks guys…I’ll try iTunes first.

ParticipantI’m as much a Man U fan as I am Chicago Fire…so while I was impressed at the goal the Fire scored, I came into this game knowing they would lose. The Fire originally were winning the MLS Championships when the MLS started, but time’s passed and the team fell a bit. Nowadays they seem to always have a good start but fall apart in the second half.
Man U were the recent Premier League Champions. Plus the European teams have way more resources to put into their game than the US does. Eventually the Fire will pick up their game in a few years, but I’ll be honest in saying the MLS can’t even come close to the talent of the European Teams. It’s why I like to try to catch the EU games when I can.
Euro Cup is next year. Excited for that.

Participant3 to 1 Manchester United.
The Fire scored one goal in the first half but fell apart in the second. They were no match for Wayne Rooney.

The same thing happens when using traktor scratch in DVS, you only get syncing working when using midi.
I agree. I have not seen ANY software title able to effectively do sync with timecode playing manually. The best perhaps was putting the timecode on relative mode and thus it simply acts as an on/off switch.
With Scratch Live, you can play without the timecode. I even knew a guy who connected his DJM-800 to his laptop and totally used it as a midi control to run Scratch Live. What I think is silly are the Scratch Live fans who keep bragging about how Serato is “keepin it real” by not putting the “evil sync button” in Scratch Live.
Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to use it…and I still feel I’ll judge the set as a whole more than how they got there.

ParticipantJokes aside, I like to cook. My father was a restaurant man and he taught me a lot about the kitchen. I even run a food blog.
I like photography, watching movies, traveling, taking walks, spending time with loved ones, and geeking out on new job skills.

ParticipantIf I’m playing live, I’ll do the best I can with what I have. Generally if I’m not feeling it or not feeling a good vibe, I’ll pull out a floorfiller or old school cut and surprise everyone. In Slovakia I ended up playing French Kiss by Lil Louis. I laugh about that because I think the crowd didn’t know what to expect, especially when the moaning started…and the DJs were all “DAAAAAAMN!” because they’re all younger and envied I had classics like that.
If I’m making a mix at home and I can’t seem to feel good about it, or I’m stressed on other things and can’t focus, I’ll put it away for the night. You can’t force it. Usually the next day it all comes together. Sleep is an amazing thing.

ParticipantI’ll try to take a photo of my recent setup and illustrate how I like to be modular.
Plus AVID’s asking for Torq DJs to send them pics of setups!

ParticipantAlways ask. If you have to provide sounds, then look for a place you can rent them, but also make sure the bar is playing you decently.
I can imagine it’s not terrible if you’re just bringing a laptop and control, but if you have to bring speakers, then they need to pay you more for that. I usually at least tell them the cost of a rental and make it clear they have to pay for that. If this place generally wants music though, they should invest in speakers.

ParticipantI dunno. I still think it’s a bit insane to get that kind of stuff.
I ended up getting a L-shaped desk from IKEA and it works nicely for my computer and DJ stuff.
