I get a kick when the criticism is geeky.

For instance, I have some debating if my recent tech house mix is really tech house…like that’s the important factor of our lives.

It just takes practice. In the beginning I totally trainwrecked everything, then finally could hold 32 beats together. Then it became 64, 128, and so on up to several minutes.

I use sync now, simply because it makes life easier. I don’t see why I should say no to innovationswhen they do the task I need them to do. Nowadays, knowing how to beatmatch by ear it more for fixing a bad blend when sync fails, or when you have a moment where you can’t use sync.

I’m no expert, but isn’t CrooklynClan.net supposed to be the spot?

Also check out SoundCloud and blogs. Most of these mashups are unauthorized, so most of the good ones might not be on any legal sites to buy from.

I took a quick look, but I’ll admit I’m not the person to ask since I’m not into dubstep or anything “minimal”.

I think it’s cool you want feedback in order to improve, but I’ll tell you to also look at the hits/listens/downloads also as an indicator. I will post a mix or blog and not see any comments, but see plenty of hits. That does speak to me.

Post your mixes as entries in the music section here. I also suggest you seeknout a dubstep message board or facebook group where you can post yor mixes and ask for feedbak. Perhaps try submitting your mixes to online shows you like. See if they will play you as a guest.

I’ve been partial to Sound Forge, but I think if one plays enough with Audacity it will fulfill their needs.

    Try Audacity, it’s free.

Floorfillers. Also bear in mind some crowds simply won’t budge. Like if I’m playing a lounge I’m not going to try to make people dance.

Likewise, I attended (not DJed) a wedding where the ONLY songs people would dance to were the traditional cheesey wedding tunes. They wouldn’t dance to anything else. Slow tunes also filled the floor.

Sometimes you can try your best and give it your all, but end up with a crowd who simply doesn’t want to dance.

But How Can Deadmau5 be compared to every Trixie and Douchebag; and it Suddenly Be Okay ?

I might be a DJ, but I know better than to walk up to another DJ and disrespect him/her by trying to tell them their set is bad or the music isn’t good. Even if I hate the music being played, I’ll look around first and see if people are dancing/happy. That’s what counts.

I don’t care if he’s God on high or an absolute nobody, you don’t disrespect someone like that. Imagine if I climbed on stage when Deadmau5 is performing and disrespected him like he did that DJ?

I still think there’s a bigger story to all this on why that guy punched out Deadmau5, but the article doesn’t give us a clue to why. I might get infuriated at the douchebags and trixies who bug with stupid requests, but I wouldn’t take a swing at them.

    I Don’t Understand ?

I’ve seen this before. At the point pop celebrities suddenly are starting bands or becoming DJs, that’s when people see it as “lame”. So you’ll see less people go to clubs, perhaps even the glam/bottle service thing go into decline (I’m sure this economy is helping that decline more). Thus many of the weekend warrior DJs who were never serious will quit.

The music also goes into decline, as we’ll see the mainstream folk suddenly latch on to something else. Maybe it’ll be rap music, as opposed to this electro-house pop hybrid thing, or it’ll be rock music. Even David Guetta’s 15 minutes of fame will end. I’m surprised we haven’t seen a new punk movement grow in this bad time. Punk rock usually grows in economic bad times…hence why it blew up in the UK in the 70s, and the Grunge thing happened in the 90s.

Sometimes you need to watch something die in order for it to be reborn as something better. It’s all like a Phoenix, where the bird burns itself up, and then it reborn. With the mainstream/pop element removed, things get more underground. It’s great for the underground folks, terrible for those who play mainstream music.

I dunno…he sounds like every trixie and douchebag who comes up and asks me to play crappy pop music.

I read the article, but it sounds like there’s more to all this…as the DJ went LATER to knock Deadmau5.

It might be a good thing though. When people see Hilton playing, DJing might get moved into the “lame” column and many will quit.

Now I have a real reason to hate David Guetta.

What annoys me more is I’m sure every celebrity-chasing idiot will pack clubs to hear Paris “play” (even if she trainwrecks or fakes it all) while many more talented DJs are still stuck in empty rooms.

I wonder at what point will we see Paris or Pauly D playing Ultra or Ibiza?

Not looking forward to winter in Chicago. 🙁

I’m a firm believer in upgrade when you need to upgrade…not for the sake of image or being ahead of the Jones’.

If your setup works ideally for you, then keep it. If you find yourself with limits that you believe Traktor, Serato, or even Torq would overcome, then move on. I agree that you should download demos and see what is ideal for you, but not to plop down $500-$1000 on new stuff if your current setup does the job you need.

I had one guy recently shocked because he found out I did a recent mix on just Torq 2.0 with an X-Session Pro. I heard the back and forth on how much a S4 or VCI-300 is packed with features, but I told him that when I have off-time at work it’s easier with a smaller controller I can lock away in a drawer, but also that in many cases, you just need the basics. I mapped it to control the basics and some of the effects in how I use them. It’s a great example of “less is more”.

Like I said, don’t upgrade or buy anything to fulfill an image. Get something because you know it will work best for you. I’ll gladly walk into events with my Xponent, Torq, and Windows Laptop…and shatter the stereotypes. I could use Traktor, and I’ve tried the recent versions, but Torq works ideally for my needs. You need to think the same way when you pick gear.
