In a similar position here. Obviously there is always room for improvement. But I am confident about my ability to mix for a dance floor. I really want to learn scratching, but on the DJC.4 its tough. I keep coming to the conclusion that I need to upgrade/expand the hardware. I dont like that conclusion, but it is what I keep coming back to.

I see a lot of DJs using Ableton with a launchpad, mpc’s, or other hardware. But that would be a big step and alot of money. I am also slowly teaching myself how to play piano and am learning production techniques, but that is a whole other discussion.

@DjSoviet I think its a matter of starting to get better/bigger and more interesting/dynamic gigs. I go to school in Rochester New York, and am working at trying to start some kind of scene for music outside of TOP40. I feel like the possibility for getting creative in front of a audience with your mixing and music would be much greater in a ‘underground’ or ‘off the beaten path’ club scene that at your classic TOP 40 bar/club.

Hey man, I really don’t have the all the answers for you as I am relatively new to the game as well. But I do have some advice as to how you can start educating yourself.

    # 1) Just read, read, and read some more. Read reviews of controllers, read reviews of software, read thread after thread, read the comments section on blog posts, read whatever material you can find on the world of music. Slowly but surely you will come to understand what is going on.

#2) Watch and listen to routines. When I am studying, working, chilling or what ever I will put on recorded sets from all kinds of artists/DJs. Just by listening to what they are doing, and then experimenting with it yourself, you will come to understand a lot of what is going on. Also watching routines on youtube of which there are thousands e and they all have something to offer in terms of understanding techniques and the hardware/software integration.

#3) Experiment on your own, and build your own techniques. One of my favorite things to do is to hook up to a nice sound system when no one is around and just go wild with experimentation. I honestly have no idea what I am doing, or what it is called, but you learn alot from it. And though you cant pull a lot of that stuff during an actual gig, bits and pieces of it end up coming through in your sets without you realizing it.

Also try downloading the demos of some of the DAWS. Whether its FL or Abelton or whatever and just screw around; start teaching yourself some things. My philosophy is that there is no rush, there is an unlimited amount to learn, so don’t stress out.

    good luck

I am running Virtual DJ, with a DJC.4 and am also looking for something like the akai lpd8 as a secondary controller. Any idea on how well VDJ works with something like that?

    Thanks for the tips.

Whenever we try to plug the master outputs of the first controller into the auxiliary input of the second we get terrible sound quality from tracks that are loaded on the first controller. We have been tinkering with settings ect. and have not been able to fix the problem. Any ideas on what the problem is here?

We are also looking into a 2 channel mixer as suggested, but we are hoping to not have to make that purchase.
    Thanks again.

I have been messing around with the VDJ for awhile now and am looking to buy a controller to take my DJing to a slightly higher level. I have two questions:

    1) I have read about the importance of choosing the right software; I am comfortable with VDJ after a month or so, should I stick with it? or are Traktor/Serato worth the switch?

    2) Based on the software, what are your controller suggestions? $300 dollars is my approximate budget. What are your thoughts on the DJ 4Set?

    Thanks for your help.
