Whilst not strictly audio (or really a super-beginner thing), but getting MIDI clock out of Traktor, through an Audio 10, was an absolute nightmare, for some reason Traktor couldn’t find the MIDI-out port of the soundcard (this in the middle of a gig). I was supposed to play with a mate that night (him synced up to Traktor’s master clock, playing with Ableton), but he had to play after me, cause I couldn’t solve the problem. I still can’t figure out what the problem was, when I got home and plugged everything in, it all worked perfectly.

I’m looking into starting using a mic for recordings as well (have yet to buy a mic though), and am not the most confident person available either, but I’d say, try practicing at home. It may seem a bit silly, but try recording yourself, if you have problems with coming up what to say, write a text, or talk about something (maybe do a quick, narrated tour of your gear) and practice articulating and talking confidently.

So you’re saying with the “normal” Mixtrack, I would need to purchase a sound card? Someone also mentioned Numark’s DJ in a box system – would something like that be a viable option, as well? Thanks again!

Basically yes, either a soundcard or a splitter cable (soundcard being preferrable). I haven’t had any experience witht the DJ in a box system, but I looked it up on Numark’s site, and it looks like it is fairly outdated.

I recently got myself a VCI-100SE + Traktor Audio 2, the VCI-100 is fairly heavy, but it’s built like a tank and has got a really small footprint (without getting cramped). There’s also great support from DJTechtools.

What you’re going to need to DJ with mp3s are:

A controller (it is possible to mix using just a mouse and keyboard but it takes away a lot of the “feeling”)
A computer (to run your DJ software, keep in mind that unless you need to take your computer with you, a laptop is not necessary)
Headphones (There are loads of them out there, for starters, most “over the ear” headphones should work, but keep in mind you might need an adapter for them)
    Speakers.

I’m guessing she might have stuff like a computer and speakers already (doesn’t have to be any special speakers, anything from portable speakers to hi-fi works).

As far as controllers go, the most recommended budget controller out there is the Numark Mixtrack. This is a *great* controller for “mixing at home” on a budget. Something you might want to consider however, is a sound card. When mixing, you’ll want to be able to output two audio signals from your computer (one to the speaker, which will play your ‘current’ track, and one to your headphones, which will play your next track). There is a version of the Numark Mixtrack, called Numark Mixtrack Pro, which has a built-in soundcard (so you can just hook the controller up directly to the speakers), but is in all other regards equal to the ‘normal’ Mixtrack (the Mixtrack Pro is a bit pricier though).

As for software, most controllers come with a “Light Edition” an existing DJ software, such as Traktor or Virtual DJ, so that should not be a problem (unless you’re buying second-hand).

Hope that clears some things up

If you’re just going to have a bedroom setup – Mixtrack Pro, hands down, it’s spaceous, great jogs and cheap.

But if you want to be able to throw your controller in a bag (and say, bring it to a party or w/e), you might want to consider something like a used Reloop Mixage IE, it’s smaller and more durable, and I’ve found used ones for cheaper than a new Mixtrack Pro, of course, if you don’t have the software, that might be a problem (unlike the Mixtrack Pro which has plug and play with the free Serato DJ Intro).

I recently sold off my Mixtrack Pro (picked up a VCI-100SE to use as portable controller, in addition to my Turntables + Mixer and Kontrol X1), and for a beginner on a budget (or a ‘gateway drug’, if you will) it’s great.

I mix a bit of vinyl as well, and have gotten used to the tactile feel of it, so I think I’d have a hard time adjusting to not having jogwheels and/or vinyls. (Which is funny, because the only controller I have at the moment is the X1, and I don’t run TSP2)

I’d wager at least half of my DJing equipment is second-hand. Both of my turntables, my mixer and my laptop is second-hand (what can I say, macs are expensive…). And it is a bit of a gamble, most equipment you can check if it’s in good working condition or not (turntables for example), others can be a bit more difficult. My mixer recently failed on me, but since I got that ( + two other mixers) when I bought my turntables, it’s not that big a loss.

Just try different stuff out, keep practicing until you get hang of how the music is structured, phrasing etc. Then just try different transitions until you find something that you think sounds good, make a note of it, take a new track, do the same thing.

I’d imagine mixing anything that isn’t 4/4 is really difficult (Freeform Jazz anyone?)

The rules are at the end of that video.
Easy stuff, no mix needed, just a quick Vlog to let me know who you are and stuff.

The Mixtrack has been modded and is very “scratch-friendly”

Contest goes through the 14th, so don’t dally. No cost to you, I mail it and everything.

If you don’t know, I am a beta-tester, writer, product demonstrator and have more equipment than I know what to do with. So I just wanna share the wealth a bit, and let someone else try out the Mixtrack, which is an excellent controller.

I’ll also hook ya up with my “cue+scratch” TSI if you need it.

I’ve got a Mixtrack Pro already, but I’d love that .tsi
