If you’re trying to get started on a budget, mixing “in the box” (i.e. using internal mixing mode) is probably the cheapest way to do things, which would allow you to use your laptop / computer’s internal sound card or a single external soundcard.

Do you already have other kit that you want to use (turntables, CD decks, mixer etc)?

As DJ Vintage said, the SZ has balanced jack outputs for the booth output, so I’d say the cables you have ordered are the ideal solution (balanced / TRS jack to XLR).

In my opinion XLR connectors are much more robust than jacks, and are the right tool for the job – they were designed for pro audio. Jacks are only used to save space – they were originally designed for telephone exchanges!

Jack connections are more prone to come loose and are also noisy when connecting / disconnecting, so I’d always use XLR when there is a choice.

I don’t think the aggregate device setup would have an impact on CPU – as far as I know there’s no audio processing going on, it just routes the audio to the different locations. Got to be worth a try, it only takes a few minutes to set up.

    Good luck 🙂

It’s a weird bug for sure. Seems like it must be something Traktor related but who knows whether they will ever fix it.

I wonder if you could add a compact DAC to your setup and use the digital SPDIF output on the Motu as your extra output pair as a workaround.

Or… set up an aggregate audio device using the Motu + internal soundcard and use your laptop’s headphone output for the preview channel.

I have the same interface (Motu Ultralight Hybrid Mk3) and get the same crash when trying to assign the phones outputs in external mode. Running Traktor 2.11.0 23 and Yosemite OS X 10.10.5.

I’m a bit baffled as to why it would do this; perhaps it’s because the phones output is slightly different to the others in that it is assignable in the MOTU Audio Setup utility to monitior other outputs?? Some sort of feedback loop detection as you suggested maybe.

Adding another mixer won’t give you more headroom or volume.

Your RCF Evox’s have an input sensitivity of +4dBu. This means you can drive them to maximum output with an input signal of +4dBu.

Your DDJ-SZ has a maximum output of +24dBu, more than enough to drive the speakers to max output with bags to spare.

To find the maximum level (and so max volume from speakers) just turn the speaker level control up until you see the limit lights start to come on, then back it off until they go out again.

Can it be done? Technically, yes. Using splitter cables or pass through sockets, you could split your output signal into the various inputs and it would work.

Should you do it? Not if you value your reputation and / or want it to sound good.

You have a real mixture of cabinets there, none of which are designed to operate together as part of a bigger system. You will get a lot of distortion caused by the different cabinets summing at some frequencies and cancelling at others.

I would tell the organisers you can provide a small system (e.g. your 2 EV speakers + Behringer Sub) but it will only cover a small portion of the field. If they want more coverage they will need to source a bigger system from elsewhere.
