Thanks for pointing out screenflow – seems like a good program, i will test it – when i have an mac 😉

I don’t know if a Macbook Pro can handle DJing, screen-, video- AND audio recording seamlessly without running out of CPU power or causing spikes. My old windows Laptop i’m using for Djing surely can’t. But you can try!

I try to explain how I do it at the moment, maybe you get a few ideas!

The way i solve the problem with syncing up audio and video is routing the booth output of my s4 to the line-in of my second PC to which a webcam is connected, too. If your controller has only one audio output, you could use a stereo-splitter cable.

Video from Webcam + audio from controller -> Capture software = Video with synced up with audio

Now you only need a screenrecorder software on your Dj laptop and sync the parts you want later with your Video you’ve created on your second laptop.

This way my DJ Laptop isn’t bothered with tasks unrelated to djing and the quality of your recording will be nice. Of course you need a decent video capture device, unlike mine – a pixelmaschine-webcam…

The program i use for Video/Audio capture is NCH Debut – It’s for Mac and PC and can record the screen, too.
And its free for private usage! -> link

I hope you get a few Ideas from this – I will definitely try screen recording now 🙂

Since you already have VirtualDJ Pro:
Controller wise you could go with the all-famous mixtrack pro – its working well with VirtualDJ. And its not very expensive and gets the basics done. If you sure you won’t drop djing and considering you already spent a fair bit on the Pro version – I would invest a bit more, to be future-proof. Maybe look into the Reloop Terminal Mix 2 or 4.

An Advice from me: If you bought your controller, stick with it until you really need something new, don’t make the mistake of buying to much gear – It’s primarily about the music you love!
Practice often, if possible everyday (1+ hour a day is fine). The point is you don’t want long breaks between your practice sessions or you forget things you already learned. Spend time searching for music, build your personal collection without relying too much on the Charts/TopX out there. Of course you need the bangers which everyone knows (And you don’t hate 😉 ) – The right mixture between known and unknown (to the audience) makes the difference 🙂

    Hope this helps a little!

Edit: plus what Ess Jay said 😉

    Hi Alex Wray,

A Faderfox DJ3 came immediatly to my mind while reading your post.
It has two faders and a crossfader, a set of 4 rotary push-encoders and 8 knobs and numerous buttons.
The great thing is you have different midi pages with switches, for example, the top four encoders have 7 midi-pages, each one accessible with a switch, which makes 28 rotary push-encoders – plus a shift button 🙂

I guess the provided mapping for Traktor for the DJ3 alongside a Launchpad for Loop/Hotucue/Instant effects control would be an awesome & very portable setup.

The FDJ3 is at 169€ at the moment, so its not exactly cheap.

Another thought would be the Behringer CMD mm-1 which also has faders and knobs/encoders (and a few buttons).

That’s all i can think of at the moment. If more controllers come to my mind, i will post it here.

    Hey FleXe,

I’ve bookmarked your mix since January, finally found the time to listen.

I liked this mix more than your first DnB-Mix – this one is darker & deeper. The tracks selection is fine, there is a nice arc of suspense from the beginning to end. And i got more ideas for expanding my DnB-Tools 🙂

    Keep it up!

    Hello iR2DJ2,

Before I bought an S4, my setup consisted of an s2 and an LPD8, which is a very versatile little beast in my opinion. Working with those two at the same time is no problem.

To add the LPD8 to your arsenal, simply add a new MIDI-Device (Generic Midi), set in and out – port to the LPD8 (it should be connected 😉 ) and then press Press “Add In”, search the desired item you want to map a button to, press “learn” and the press a button on the LPD8 – Voila, mapped 🙂

Because the LPD8 has Four MIDI-Banks with each 2 sets of Pad-Banks (CC and Note), you have essentially 16 buttons and 8 knobs per bank right at your disposal. I used the LPD8 for the following things (to give you a few ideas):

    • Access to all 8 Hotcues with the Buttons
    • Effects on/off and values with the knobs / FX-Unit assign
    • Sample (remixdeck) slots with Volumes (only the first row mappable)
    • Keyadjust with the Knobs
    • The LPD8 as a little all-in one Controller with Transportcontrol / 4 Hotcues and Filter/EQ

Hope this helps a little 🙂

Finally hat the time to listen to your Set 🙂

The flow of the Mix is very nice, it feels like it is one big deep techno track with all its breaks, build-ups, drops and so on! Well done!

There are a few things that are bothering me, though:

    • it’s a bit repetitive in structure: break, build up,drop (breaks are sometimes to low in volume). Change things up, like adding long smooth transitions without falling back to the break/build-up/drop scheme.
    • Spice it up a bit! its possible even in deep techno 😉 Like grab some vocals and layer them on top.
    • More outstanding synth-lines like the one at 1:31:00! I loved that part 😀 Spread tracks like this throughout the mix – It makes it much more pleasant to the (my ) ear and less repetitive!

Hope that’s not to harsh and you get some tips out of my suggestions!
It’s my personal opinion, another one may not see the points I saw 🙂
I would love to hear your opinion on my mixes (newest), if you like techo/tech-house and have time!

As always, keep on and enjoy the music!

Thank you very much for your review and your kind words 🙂

Being able to tell every transition; is this a good or a bad thing? 😉 Should I try to do them more smoothly?

Haha 😀 the Pitch-change … this is nowhere done on purpose: I have mapped the master speed adjust to the gain-knob of deck c and if I forget to change the modifier/shift I change the speed instead of the gain … guess i have to rethink my mapping, this happens a bit too often 😉 I did this to change the speed while keeping the playing maschine in sync.

Regarding the gear, there’s an advice from me: Learn your gear before moving on to the next – I bought too much! My F1 lays waste at the moment. I’m concentrating on the S4/maschine and the occasional vinyl (which is really fun, having the music at your hands – literally). The MF3D will be the next one to master!

I’m glad i introduced you to new music 🙂

    As always, enjoy the music!

    greets
