ParticipantWelcome, Vibez!

ParticipantThis forum needs like/+1 buttons so we can laugh/agree without making a full post.
I sure as heck won’t be able to scratch AND flick the crossfader with only one arm. Thanks, you have saved me from serious problems in the future!

Participantrizki – Honestly, my biggest complaint about pop these days is that the engineering is TERRIBLE! I know that it’s deliberate, and that the engineers they’re employing are actually some of the best in the world, but dear lord the compression and levels just make me want to bite my arm off.

ParticipantHowdy, Ryan, welcome! I just bought a cheap controller myself, my first, and I am having a total blast!

ParticipantHey, baz, welcome!

ParticipantIt certainly gets me in the mood straight out of the gate, thanks!

ParticipantMy gig is confirmed (since it was only a lead, not the big bosses, who wanted it). I will be recording it so I can post it and hopefully get some feedback from y’all. I expect it to be passable for a n00b like me, and sufficient for a BBQ, but I am hoping y’all will be able to help me identify mistakes that I may not be aware of yet.

ParticipantIt’s not that I’ve a problem with cloud computing, it’s purely the DRM. It’s true that it doesn’t help in all cases, but refusing to participate in draconian DRM has has an impact on the market – especially in the game industry (which is my day job).
That said, I have a lot of experience writing audio software, and I know what MIK is doing under the hood – identifying the tones that are being played in a track is a dawdle, the only hard part is the expert system that takes the data from there and determines the key. I am seriously considering extending KeyFinder (FOSS rules!) to see if I can manage to help increase its accuracy. I won’t bore y’all with the technical details, but it seems worth my time.

ParticipantD-Jam – Reminds me of the Blues Brothers playing Bob’s Country Bunker… a very valid point.
Right at this moment, I’m still focused more on just getting my lists together, but I am starting to pay attention to the pop charts (for the first time in my life, actually) so that I will be prepared to play that if/when I need to.

ParticipantWith regard to setting up, I’ve started to also tag my songs so that comment one will say something like “Beat In,” “Beat Out,” our “Beat In/Out” if the song begins or ends with only a beat so that I know which songs are good for starting or ending a miniset with if I’m going to transition harmonically.

ParticipantI’m starting to sit here and think about the fact that, now that I have my controller, I can remap the keyboard functionality for the things that I will only rarely use but that it would be nice to have a mapping for, or even the things that my controller just isn’t big enough for – like I could remap quads of 4×4 keys to represent the remix decks. So much that can be done.

Participant(But it is VERY tempting. *sigh*)

ParticipantYeah, but as I said, for me at least, it’s not the cost, it’s political – I am very disinclined to support DRM like this where we are dependent on the good will of the company responsible.
I acknowledge that they do seem to be a decent company, and this is not about them specifically, but about the nature of the beast itself – I refuse to give my money to companies whose practices I cannot support. Some of those companies are generally good companies, and some aren’t, and I know that I am in the minority in this practice, but… it is what it is.
I do admit that I’m tempted sometimes to give in, and this is one of those cases where I am sorely tempted, but I think that I would probably feel like I sold out if I do so.

ParticipantWow, Mixed in Key has a MAJOR downside – their DRM means that the application will not run:
1. Without an internet connection, and
2. Without their servers running.Item 1 is not a huge deal for me, but 2 – that’s ugly. It means that if they ever go out of business or decide to stop supporting the version that you’ve purchased, then your software goes bye bye.
Now, to be fair, $58 US isn’t exactly a huge price to pay, so it’s not the end of the world, and they are at least very up-front about it so I do applaud them for that, but in terms of software politics, this really discourages me from wanting to give them my money.
I guess I’ll just be happy that KeyFinder is as good as it is for now.

ParticipantOh, BTW, Terry… if you’re looking to couch surf, I could probably put you up for a weekend. We’d want to talk privately about that, of coz, to discuss specifics and all that as to whether it would work for you or not.
