I tend to use 320kbps MP3… the 320kbps mens that it will be approximately 32 kilobytes per second, and this is quite sufficient for DJing – many people (including some top DJs) say they can’t tell the difference above 192kbps, but the size difference is not so huge that it hurts to go for top quality.

I’m a pretty new DJ, so I’ve been focused on just free music – almost all of it I found on Soundcloud. I am not aware of there being a filter to just show the free stuff, but if you look at the tracks, you’ll see a download link on the ones that are free. Sometimes, they might instead have an external free download which usually involves giving the artist a like on Facebook. These both have worked very nicely for me, I have a tidy set of tracks in the style I’m starting out with.

If you are a VirtualDJ user, you can also subscribe to what’s called “Content Unlimited,” this is a service that uses Grooveshark so that you can find a very large amount of commercial music and load it into your VirtualDJ collection and play them. It doesn’t have everything, in particular, I noticed there doesn’t seem to be a lot from The Beatles (which would be something you might expect to have requested at a Wedding, which is why I thought it relevant). Still, it seems like it would be worth the money if you are expecting to get any requests.

The YouTube option is bad not only because of the illicit nature of it, but also because the sound quality is really bad. If you were to perform live with that, your mix would suffer for it.

I wasn’t able to address all of your questions, in particular, I don’t know much about Beatport at this point, but I hope this information is at least somewhat useful.

It’s a fair point. I’m trying VDJ a little more seriously just to get the hang of it, and honestly, it has a lot of features that DO fit my workflow, but the core loop of my workflow does work better with Traktor.

    *sigh*

I’m thinking maybe I might do well to get comfortable with both, just because then I will have flexibility to lean either way depending on my need in a given moment.

I do envy you the proper gear, my finances are super tight so I bought something cheap that’s barely more than a toy (though great for learning on).

In Traktor, you can set markers that will do automated (though very simplistic) transitions. I wouldn’t want to use it often, but the style I prefer (Ghetto Funk/Nu-funk) tends toward songs that aren’t long enough to take a bathroom break.

I guess I could always create my own extended mix of a few of the really great tracks too.

Yeah. From what videos I’ve watched, I don’t think it would match my workflow anyway. That said, while I tend to like Traktor’s workflow the best of what I’ve used, I am finding things about VirtualDJ that are appealing – however, that might be better as a new topic.

I have been thinking about maybe just a couple of Marker automations for bathroom breaks for when I need to keep going for longer than I can hold it in.

Is it true that Serato already has this? For what is probably obvious reasons, it’s the package I know the least about.

I’m a n00b, so my input is of limited value, but I enjoyed it. Your transitions were smooth enough that I didn’t notice them while listening to it while I worked.

Oh, Vintage, I like that idea much better. A way to feedback directly that the set is bangin’. I mean, I know it’s important for a DJ to read the room (a skill that I have yet to even start working on), but that would be very useful as an additional datum.

And for what it’s worth, I’ve only been programming the controller configuration as I’m going along during practice and come up with something useful – it’s not something that I find difficult, so if I were to take the same time I spent programming and instead have done paying work for it, it wouldn’t have even added up to enough for me to upgrade to another model yet.

I realize you were just kidding, of course.

That sounds good, man. Good rhythm to it.
