Though even so, I practice so much that I do still end up listening/mixing my tracks a few hundred times.

It’s overkill even for me, ’cause I know my tracks well enough that I don’t really have to look at the markers.

However, the act of creating those markers is part of how I develop this knowledge. Sure, I could listen to a track a few hundred times, or I could break it apart and analyze it.

My scientific mind tends toward analysis.

Though beefing up KeyFinder is still one of the things I intend to get around to eventually.

I’m going to try to simplify this discussion just a little bit. The original poster basically asked:

“Are gaming laptops good for DJing?”

    The short answer is “yes”.

Summarizing everything here, the long answer is yes, but it’s overkill in some ways, and not the best choice in others.

    You are overthinking it.

    Camelot vs. Open Key

The numbers and letters are different, but they mean exactly the same thing. So, 4A in Camelot is 9m in Open Key. They behave the same, though – you can go from 9m to 10m, 8m, or 8d, and so on and so forth, just the same. In Camelot, A is minor, B is major. In Open Key, m is minor and d is major.

However, the biggest thing to be aware of is that Traktor’s built-in key detection is BAD with a capital BAD. Check out DJTT’s great article comparing what’s available – Key Detection Software Comparison: 2014 Edition

Traktor will import the key detection from MiK. Internally, it will still display it using Open Key, but the important thing is that it will use MiK’s detected key rather than trying to use it’s own *bleep*y routine.

When you are importing tracks into Traktor, you want to analyze them – by default, it will do a full analysis and step all over MiK’s detected key. When you get that Analysis pop-up, check “Custom” (or whatever, don’t have Traktor in front of me, so the exact word may be slightly different), then make sure that you check the options you want (I use gain and BPM/first beat) but leave key unchecked.

    Hope this helps!

I am a new DJ, but have been producing for decades… I have a similar success rate to Terry’s for just knowing where I am in a track.

Very useful for when someone is talking to me just before I need to do a transition.

Terry – While people DO it, Mixcloud’s policies actually forbid individual tracks, and people won’t be able to download the edits to use themselves.

Antoine – Soundcloud is probably the go-to place for that, although it is important to always bear in mind that your edits and remixes are copyright violations, so there is a chance that your tracks will get a takedown order if your edit is of a big track. I post my remixes on Soundcloud, and haven’t had any takedowns yet, but my remixes don’t resemble the original track very much, so that probably contributes to it. A straight up edit tends to be a lot closer to the original track, so is more likely to get a takedown order.

I don’t use that, but I do something similar… my markers are related to the purpose of each phrase – Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Instrumental Tag, etc… and an indicator for if the phrase has vocals. The meaning of the values I use are Yes, No, and what I call Semi – meaning there are vocal “bits,” but not quite enough to count as vocals – Semis can almost always mix with other Semis, and often with true Vocals, but never mix two Vocal phrases together.

heh. Yeah, although I would not be surprised to see more DJ software start to offer the option of leveraging the GPU, since it would do amazing things for making their software run on lower spec machines.

Traktor is what I had been using, it got to where it was insufficient for my needs. My day gig is video game developer, so I’m up to the task, and this way, I have total control over my workflow.

It’s coming along really well, my prototype has the basics – independent time stretching and pitch shifting, track loading, playing, volume + eq mixer, and cue points… just finishing up prototyping the UI now. I am hoping to be ready to use it when I play out on Friday.

It’s about 3 weeks of work to get to here, which I think is totally time well spent for what this will do for me.

Vashti – It sounds like one of the internal fans got damaged to me.

Chuck – Yeah, the video card is certainly overkill for most DJ software. I’m thinking about leveraging the GPU for doing the heavy lifting in my software, since it’s there and MUCH better suited to doing the math than a general purpose CPU.
