ParticipantEven though I wasn’t one of the popular kids when I was that age, I still knew what the other kids were listening to without needing to ask them.

ParticipantI’m not distracting myself from DJing… I’m enhancing the style that I’ve developed. Yes, there are other programs that I could continue to shoe-horn the way I want to work into, but why should I? Especially when writing my own software and being able to do whatever I want with it is so much fun?

ParticipantI haven’t, but it looks interesting, I’ll have to check it out!

ParticipantAgain, highly cultural. If your particular crowd is going to run screaming, then maybe it’s not a good idea… but if you think the crowd will be willing to stick around for you injecting some new ideas into their ears, then do it. You know your audience way better than we can.

ParticipantAppropriate music to play seems very culturally oriented to me… but you should have a pretty good idea of what music is popular with your classmates, don’t you?

ParticipantHowdy, Jonas – You will get a more positive response by creating your own topic rather than adding unrelated questions to an existing thread. The “new post” thingy is at the bottom of the forum page where you would want to post it. Hope that helps.

ParticipantOh, and Chuck – I have been doing a little backburner research into improving KeyFinder… I have some ideas that could really improve it a lot.
My goal, of course, is to rival MiK’s accuracy. I believe that the best way to approach it is, instead of trying to come up with really good detection code, instead I will build a deep learning AI and let it figure out how to listen to music. They have gotten to where, with no direct training, they can identify cats in pictures on the internet (very important), so vision is solid… and the strides in voice recognition have also been phenomenal with deep learning. Soooo, let’s teach a computer how to listen to music!

Participantheh. Yeah, there is that.
I did check Flow, and it’s in the same area as what I’m looking for, but is a little bit too basic for my needs.
It’s coming along great, though I am running a little behind schedule for when I hoped to have my prototype done. The audio engine is prototyped, but the user interface prototyping is going a LOT slower than I had hoped. But it IS purty.
I’ll be heading to the US next week, so it will be a couple of weeks before I have a playable prototype, but it has been an awesome learning experience. I am looking forward to having total control over my workflow.

ParticipantYup… it’s definitely about whatever helps you to learn your tracks best.

ParticipantDoes it improve if you unplug the controller and test it with just mouse/keyboard?

ParticipantI’ve been pretty pleased with the Hercules DJ Control Instinct, although it doesn’t have proper pitch faders – and I’m not sure it’s even a valid controller for Serato.

ParticipantWhile not having direct experience with it, I do understand the technical details enough to say – if you are using Traktor, then you probably want a Traktor controller.
I’m going to get a little technical… Traktor controllers do not work via MIDI, but instead something called “HID.” HID is basically just USB. It might seem as if other controllers are also USB, but they are MIDI devices under the hood, and as such constrained by the limits of MIDI – a much older standard with stricter limitations. As a result of this, the amount of latency (the time it takes for you to push a button or, more importantly, scratch a jogwheel) is higher with MIDI than it is with HID.
So, if you use Traktor, a Traktor controller will always perform better than a non-Traktor controller (with the exception of the few non-NI HID controllers that work with Traktor). However, depending on your skill level, this may have no bearing on you. It is of most importance to folks who want to scratch, for which Traktor is generally not the go-to choice. Soooo, a MIDI controller will still introduce a potentially noticeable lag if your ear is good enough.
I hope this information has at least helped you to understand what the decision you’re making really is, and that you can make an informed decision now.
