ParticipantHi, Osver, welcome!

ParticipantI think maybe by “fully customized,” perhaps what he means is “top-of-the-line.”

ParticipantThanks!
I am actually not intending to release the software, it’s for my use only… most experienced programmers will tell you that the hardest part in writing software is allowing for all of the *bleep*ed up things that the users will try to do with your software that you never accounted for.
This way, I can just focus on my own needs.
I posted the set on my Friday Flavourites post in another thread.

ParticipantChuck – Not entirely accurate. HID could be remapped if the coders of the software wanted to allow for it.
HID is just a fancy word for a USB device. This can be a little confusing because pretty much all DJ controllers use USB, even if they are MIDI only. In the case of MIDI, they just use the USB to transport the MIDI signal.
The biggest thing is not the mapping, it’s that USB is a LOT faster than MIDI, so you will get much better response.

ParticipantI agree with Spars – in particular, I think it’s a good idea (especially early on) to practice on the hardware you’ll be taking with you when you play out.

ParticipantAudacity isn’t great for remixing – you can do it, but expect to exert a lot of extra effort for a result that isn’t as good as what you can get in Ableton.
The best thing you can do with Ableton is take its tutorials and watch the millions (I’m not even positive I’m exaggerating with that number) of videos about using Ableton available on YouTube.

ParticipantThe stop-n-drop is always a good one for big changes like that… on the 3rd beat of the last bar you want to play, press stop on the outgoing deck, wait one beat, then press play on the incoming. It can work nicely with a record-stop effect as part of the stop.

ParticipantHi, Manish, welcome!
Cheeku’s from India, but I think he’s changed his name. I understand he’s getting some trademark hassle over on FB over the new name.

ParticipantAt long last, here it is – the first set played with the prototype of my DJ software.
It was a whole lot of fun getting this far, and I am really going to enjoy having total control of my workflow. This set is a bit of a baseline, I am not pushing it very hard, but I will need to spend some time practicing the workflow before I can really push it.
Please forgive the bumps. In particular, “Crazy, Crazy” by Skeewiff & Keith Mansfield really didn’t work in the mix, slowed down way too much. I also need to fine tune the EQ response and a whole slew of other things, but that’s neither here nor there – this thing is fun to play with!
Hope you enjoy it, thanks for listening!
Setlist:
Swahn – Swing Fandango
Phylo – The Way You Look Tonight
JR.Dynamite – Gangster’s Paradise
Smokey Joe & the Kid – The Monkey Song
Smokey Joe & the Kid – Andrew’s Break
Skeewiff – Sweet Georgia Brown
Warp9 – Down tha Rabbit Hole
Jpod – Sway
Ahab – Osiris
Arrowhead & Zentra – Funkyard
Mr. Jennings – Chiznickens
Enzalla – Neurons
Beat Fatigue – Dazzling Delight
deathy – Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop
Warp9 – Slapstick
DJ Wood – Get Bendy
Casual Connection – This is How We Do It
Skeewiff & Keith Mansfield – Crazy, Crazy
Morlack – Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now
Pied Piper – Theme from Starsky & Hutchdeathy
ParticipantSo, the prototype is done… well, done enough to play. I won’t be able to use it to play the Friday Flavourites this week, as I only have two test songs currently loaded and marked up in it, but I will be posting a bedroom set this weekend once I get more data into it.
Very exciting!

ParticipantMaybe you might try getting someone else to do it for you, to have better results as well as something you can compare to in order to learn.
I know that Warp9 (a big name in the Glitch Funk scene) does mastering cheap, $30 per track or $80 for an album. I’m seriously thinkin’ about givin’ him a go – I know mastering, but by the time I’m done making the track, I develop a bit of deafness to it… I think someone else might do a better job with that last stretch.
