“Attraction” should have little to do with it. What is important is what kind of DJ you intend to be, what kind of genres you are likely to play, do you want to scratch, or remix live or be a mobile open format DJ. And more questions like that. As you are starting you will not “know” many of these things but you will have ideas and intentions.

While Rekordbox is as good a choice in software (or almost šŸ˜€ as it is still developing more than others to catch up) as any other software, there are two things to keep in mind:

    – Both units come with a full version of DJ software, the SX2 with Serato DJ, the RX with RekordBox.
    – The SX2 is supported by most other software in native mode (VDJ, Mixvibes Cross, DJay Pro, etx.) and will actually work fine with RekordBox as well. The other way around the RX will play nicely with RekordBox, but no guarantees it will work equally well (if at all) with other software.

My personal advice, if you are not 100% sure that RekordBox is and will remain your software of choice (which is hard as a starting DJ due to lack of actual experience), I’d go with a controller that gives me more flexibility to change software without having to change hardware. Again, you have to make that decision yourself.

Hope the info helps you a bit in your decision-making process.

Hi Ethan, this post is almost better suited for the Introduce Yourself forum, but I’ll leave it here.

In any case, welcome to the forums. Good to see you are looking at ways to bring your love for music into practical use.

I’d try to get a beginners starter controller (search the forums for our list of “suggested” controllers) and invest in the “How To Digital DJ Fast” course. It will get you ready to play out at friends house parties and such in 6-7 weeks, by showing you how to do it and how to practice it best. Assuming you own a laptop, all you need more is a set of decent headphones and you could already be starting. Monitor speakers are very nice to have (or any other kind of speaker that let’s you hear the master out) and you probably have a set of those already being in sound engineering.

Since you can practice at any time of day/night and it’s better to practice 1/2 to 1 hour a day rather than 1 or 2 longer sessions during a week, there shouldn’t be too much problems finding the space to practice your DJ-ing.

As said, move towards playing your first live gig asap, as Phil Morse suggests as the first step towards DJ-hood: “book your first gig, even if you haven’t started on DJ-ing yet”. This will give you a deadline that will help with practice and preparation discipline as you know in a number of weeks/months you WILL be out in front of people to do your thing.

Having a sound engineering background (I feel) is a bonus being in the DJ world. You will have some background info others might lack and probably a bit deeper understanding of technology and sound manipulation (like EQ, FX).
The flipside of the coin is that you are easily tempted to treat it as an audio engineer than as a creative DJ. If you can balance those you are off to a good start.

    Hope that helps some.

I would suggest sending a mail to info@digitaldjtips.com. They can help you get your request up on the Platinum DDJT Group on Facebook. I am quite certain your chances to find the info you need there are better.

I’d gladly help, but being the old hand that I am, those would be old stories mostly as well as the old scene (although I am still active lol). Also I miss a few attributes in order for me to qualify as a female.

It’s there on controllers (the implementation does depend on the software used though).

While I am guessing you are talking about DJ lighting, your question as supplied now makes no sense unfortunately.

Can you give us some more information on what exactly it is your are trying to achieve?

in reply to: Help ! Which controller should I buy ? #2549551

No, by now all mappings should be up to date for Windows 10. You might need to download some things from the Traktor site though.

My point is that, for example, Microsoft releases Windows 11 next year, you have to stay on 10 until (in your case) Traktor reports it’s software and hardware is ready for Windows 11.

Actually the difference between playing on a controller and CDJs is that you can do LESS on a set of CDJs than you can on a controller (even the starter controllers have a few things CDJs don’t have). This is clearly thanks to the presence of DJ software on laptops of course.

The only thing significantly different on the (higher end) DJ mixers is that the FX section might need some attention. Personally I use FX a handful of times a night (with the exception of the filter, which is often a separate knob anyway) and can easily do without. While I know my way around most DJM mixers, I often don’t bother with the FX (with the exception of a bit of delay/echo perhaps) on the right side of mixer and use only the so-called Sound Color FX (the 4 buttons on the left-hand side).

While I promised not to say I would NEVER do this that or the other, I’d seriously advice against putting money into a technology that is on it’s way out. With the advent of the Denon Prime Series, there is already the dawn of a new day for “club gear”, where it will match the capabilities of a controller with laptop on a standalone DJ-player format.

Especially if you are bringing your own gear (as it seems seeing how you are borrowing stuff), once you are used to the pleasure and features of a good controller with good DJ software, you will want to bring that to your gigs, rather than play on whatever gear is put in front of you.

Depending on where you are in the world, more and more venues and clubs are aware that many DJs today want to use their own (controller/laptop) gear and facilitate that.

So, if you want to spend serious money, have a good look at the Denon SC5000 and X1800 mixer. Word of advice though. If you buy these, you might never want to touch a CDJ again!

Otherwise, find a good controller. My choice would be on the DDJ-SX2 or RX (depending on if you are 100% sure Rekordbox is your favorite DJ software flavor and will remain so). I think the SZ/RZ just does not offer the extra’s (unless you really really need them) for the almost double price you are paying.

Alternatively, if you are not hung up on Pioneer/Rekordbox, something like the Denon MC7000 or MCX8000 controllers could be a good pick. The Reloop TerminalMix 8 is also an option.

Enough to pick from. At the end of the day it all depends on what you want and need.

Not really, both Windows 10 (pretty stable now) and OSX (or apple OS as it is now called since Sierra) are compatible with all major DJ software and gear. Clearly if a new update of the OS comes out, you need to wait with upgrading your laptop til you are sure the DJ software is ready for it. Sierra for Mac took a while for some, like Serato, to give their official blessing.

I took a second look at the back of the 615. There is an EQ setting called “sub”. That might be what you are looking for. mixer to sub, sub to tops, tops set to sub eq. Again, make sure before buying.

in reply to: New Sound Set up #2549491

Normally I’d say the setup is pretty straightforward, but … on both speakers I see a thru output (for daisychaining) yet no hi-pass filter on either. And that worries me. Better check with the sales folks.

Typically the sub will have the filter and be able to handle a stereo signal (as does the 618S), so you’d run the master out from your mixer to the single sub, then two xlr cables out to each of the tops, from the hi-pass port. You don’t want the sub-low to also go to your tops. Occasionally some brand will turn it around and have the low-pass in the tops, so you go mixer to tops to sub. But in this case none of the speakers seem to have filters.

As said, check with the sales folks.

While I wouldn’t worry too much about the gear thing (can always visit the venue and get eyes-on -always a good plan btw), but the “stick to the playlist” one is what would have turned me away instantly.

That is one of those can’t win situations. You are basically a human CD-changer/jukebox. If the playlist works, fine, but you get no pleasure out of it as you are just sticking other peoples choices on. If it doesn’t work, which is far more likely (almost 100% certain really) -after all, the pinnacle of DJ-ing is knowing what must come next at that particular moment, with that particular crowd- it’s on you and your reputation.

So with that additional information, this is one job I’d certainly skip.

I’ll usually accept some dont’s and some “please play” tracks or genres, but usually only when coming from the party folks (like wedding couple). Other than that, if you hire me to do a good DJ job, then let me do my thing. If you don’t trust me enough for that and think you can do something pretty much no DJ can, create a playlist in advance that will fully work on the night itself, then by all means be my guest, but I am not gonna be around for it.

    Good luck with your decision.

Connect both with USB connector to laptop. Set controller mapping for X1 and external soundcard to Audio 2.

Now connect main output of Audio 2 (stereo mini-jack) to speakers. Put headphone plug into headphone output (headphone icon) of Audio 2. Finished.
